Skype Outage 2010: Still Down for You?

In case you didn’t know, millions of Skype users have been left frustrated this evening, as the social networking service suffered a global outage, leaving it’s users unable to sign into the software.

Despite reports that the outage had been fixed up and things were starting to return to normal, we can still confirm that our Skype is still down – leading us to believe that engineers may be restoring access to a handful of users at a time.

According to this report from VentureBeat, Skype has said that the outage was caused by Skype’s supernodes, which function as phone directories for Skype. Apparently a collection of these supernodes went MIA, sending the whole service into downtime.

Skype has said that the service is ‘gradually returning to normal’, but their message on Twitter was 5 hours ago, and the problem still persists – for us at least. Let us know your thoughts on this.

      My Skype is still messed up. I was able to get online briefly, but now I'm off again. I'm able to sign in, but not listed as online.

        Same thing JUST happened to me. LOL i was freaking out with joy when it said online but then just as i was texting my friend saying it worked, it went rite off again.

        I am having the same problem. I think I showed up as "online" for literally 2 seconds, before automatically being disconnected. :-(

      Still down for me in Cambodia. This is a problem for me as I use Skype as my principle form of communication PC to Landline/mobile- Most importantly to call back home to the States. I know downloaded MSN to vid and landline call and it works fine. I no longer can rely on Skype 100% so now I have a back up plan. Bad timing with an IPO around the corner…

      I'm still not able to be online as of 8:45 PM EST. I tried rebooting the router and restarting.

      My Skype has been down all day and its not looking good. I did get an email that I have a voicemail on Skype but I cannot get the voicemail nor call anyone. They should have a backup plan…. a way to contact them to let them know you are still having problems…

      im in the uk and mine still is down my gf is in america and this is a disaster for us two i pay to be able to call the usa and im missing out here they should have a emergancy plan!

      Yeah, skype is still down. I don’t really know what they’re talking about when they say it’s returning to normal because both my family in Spain and Germany and my boyfriend in the uk are unable to log in, and people who can log in are not online.

      Skype is still down for me here in Iowa. I can sign in, but it says I'm offline. Every once in awhile it will switch over to "online" but then within a few minutes, goes back off. I agree with SingingSkypeBlues, there should be a way to report if you are still having problems.

      Skype is pure shit.
      They are spreading BS rumors that they fixed the service.
      everyone i have talked to is still down.
      The LA times wrote a BS article that states the problems are fixed.

      10:45PM Eastern and I still can't get connected. I am able to log in but it shows me as disconnected "connecting…"…

      I even pay for a phone number with Skype.. hope they gix it.

      still down. I rely on Skype for my business as I talk to people all over the world. Skype better refund my subscription cost!

      7:56 pm Pacific time (California, USA) My skype is still down and has been all day. I think all the commentary about the skype network "beginning to get back to normal" is pure hype. I thing they haven't got a solution yet, and aren't being forthright about it.

      Still down in Australia if anyone is interested (local time 3 pm). My girlfriend is in France so still asleep. So for us they still have another 3 hours to get it fixed.

      still down here in PHoenix. as of 9:05 pm MST..came on for a second then went off again. Only way I have to communicate with my son in Honduras. Back to good old email I guess. Agree should be way to communicate status to Skype. Is this possible setup to make us pay and it will no longer be free for video calls?

      11:30 in MD. sill out. I have to wonder if Skype has been hacked, their forums are down as well. For all of their "supernodes" to be out at once seems suspicious.

      From the dark corners of the internet, I have been told by a covert (but usually very reliable source) and am inclined to believe this new rumor. That the powers that be, within this country are planning, and yes may have on a small scale, decided to topple world wide web communications under the guise of a terrorist attack, in an effort to make it easy for governmental takeover of all internet traffic. Thus controlling to a large extent international commerce and global trade. (Most of the largest hubs reside in or are controlled by the US.) Just another big ass lie like 911. And they will probably get it accomplished too.

      The US is not alone in the effort, sources site that the EU and some other NATO allies are up to their neck in this as well.

      Sitting in my office in Hong Kong (3 pm Friday local time), still can't connect to Skype. Pity they can't at least tell us what's going on, there is **** all by way of official information from them.

      Its so frustrating when you read that the problem was fixed. I still have skype on and off and have no idea when I will be using it normally. Do something!!!

      5:43 am est time December 23, 2010 and my skype hasn't worked at all yet. WTF is there major problem???? They say there working on making super nodes to fix this and it would take a few hours…. It has been way longer than they said and still not working. I don't think they care since it is free and they don't make any money off of most of us. I use to say skype was the best over Teamspeak, Ventrillo, Xfire and even ooVoo. But now I hate skype and will probably never use this shitty service again.

      I am still having a problem with staying connected. I do understand the tech behind this and I do have a back up plan, but I do prefer using Skype. I do believe they are working on the problem. We just have to be a patient and wait.

      loss of connection while talking in video mode??? really sucks and no notice you have been disconnected??
      locks up will not shutdown continues as working even though you have hung up??? slow horrible connections real nightmare over a month now.. reformatted using skype on many drives. 64mb cache as well as 32mb cache drives. three operating systems win 7 32 win 7 64 and vista 32. same versions as well as rolling back versions same troubles! SOS as in small old sh it .. when is it going to end? and where do i look now for a service that works?? real mess and it was so sweet before this. you think is was corporate espionage? whats the truth? its out there!
