Samsung Vibrant: Bell Android 2.2 Froyo Update MIA

By Updated on

We have some disappointing news for Samsung Vibrant owners on Bell Mobility now, as it looks like Samsung has pulled a planned update to Android 2.2 Froyo after discovering a fairly major problem with the update build.

As reported from Engadget, it seems as if Samsung’s Kies software once again took center stage as users have been complaining about not being able to access the internal memory feature on the Samsung Vibrant, after using Kies to upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo.

Samsung has acknowledged the problem and they have released this official statement:

”There have been intermittent issues reported during the firmware upgrade process with Kies for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000M series of phones. Samsung’s development team is currently aware of this issue and working towards a solution. Accordingly, The firmware update feature, which affects the ability to upgrade to Android 2.2, is temporarily disabled until a solution is released. “

What they failed to state is a workaround for Bell users who are now in possession of a handset which can’t make use of it’s internal memory. It’s also a headache to think that Samsung are still experiencing major problems with Froyo, even though Gingerbread is now out in the wild and Honeycomb will soon follow next year.

If you have a Samsung Vibrant on Bell in Canada, let us know your current status. Did you try to install Froyo using Kies?

really frustrating for people who buy these things in good faith to be in this position.Nokia gave me grief for years.BB have made a big effort to look after their customers. I think Samsung will come good.

Bell Phone, no rooting or lag fix. Updated to 2.2. Phone has a far worse lag than on 2.1, shortcuts disappear from the home screen if the phone is restarted, all of my apps keep changing their order in the applications folder (very strange, resorted them seemingly alphabetically, but with a couple out of sequence). No bricking so far, but this is getting ridiculous. Between this and the constant freezing problem I was having on 2.1 (had to restrict wireless bands or turn APN off to stop that), I will never buy another Samsung device again.

updataed to 2.2 wont turn on after reboot. 4-6 weeks to get it back from Samsung…pretty crappy deal for a phone that I just got 8 weeks ago.

Updated to 2.2 two weeks ago, Social hub is no longer working, Meteo apps also, apps started to disappear like Google search and Yahoo Search, On the good side Skype is working, voice recognition also, battery life increase, Bell wanted me to reset phone before I bring it for service but I think I will wait for future upgrade, I don't won't to lose my phone.

Galaxy S Vibrant on Bell – updated to 2.2 on Dec 11 – worked fine for 10 days and then my phone crapped out. GOOD NEWS – if you live in the Montreal area – you can bring the phone in person to Samsung directly (BYPASSING BELL) and get it rolled back to 2.1 and if they are unable to rollback – they will give you a brand new phone! They informed me that walk-ins take priority over mail-in repairs from Bell. I had my phone fully functional within 90 minutes (back to 2.1). Bell could take weeks.

I upgraded to froyo 2.2 over 2 weeks ago and haven't had any problems yet.

I upgraded to 2.2 and hit the continual reboot problem after it complained of an corrupt internal SD card. I couldn’t even enter recovery mode and I had to take the phone back to Bell. It took two weeks but Samsung shipped a new phone to replace the dead one.

Phone is 19 days old. I installed froyo today and the Kies software crashed, rendering my phone unbootable. Thought of using ODIN to flash it but decided not to… Instead I called Bell and they said they'd give me a loaner/swap. I'm taking it back in the morning.

Thanks for the info, my phone died on the night of the 25th (corrupted internal SD), I was about to send it through Bell, gone for weeks, read this post yesterday morning, walked home with a new phone a few hours later. Nothing come close to Absolut Service, thanks Samsung…

After th dec 11 update i was satisfied with the phone and 2.2 update…But today my phone brick on startup ( samsung logo commong on and off in loop) Returned the phone to bell…waiting 4 result but I suspect a corrupt internal memory…

Updated to 2.2 and everything started to slow down. After a few days the phone crashed and android wouldn't boot…..nice brick! Took it to Bell and I got the brush off. No clear explanation just that I had to send it directly to Samsung. They weren't going to give me a replacement until I asked them what I was paying insurance for. So the guys at Samsung can't do anything yet as their PC's aren't working. What a joke. A phone that can't be updated and technical support that needs technical support!

keeping 2.1 until more people try the new 2.2 release. Lost a phone because of the previous release so I don’t mind waiting a little this time and 2.1 isn’t that bad…

Tired of Samsung. bought 2 vibrant phones one for my wife and one for myself. Updated them to Froyo on Dec 10th. Worked fine for 5-6 days. Had to reset both phones as the phones became slow, would not access emails…… On Dec 22nd one of the phones stopped working and still waiting for a replacement. The other one is so slow and have to keep on resetting it every week.
Really tired of all this, and the worst problem is stuck to this phone for 3 yrs. The day I have $400 saved up I am getting out of this contract. Not worth all the headaches.
Never buy Samsung stuff if this is their support system. Hire some more and better programmers. Might help.

Updated to 2.2 first day it was available. Took a LONG time to reboot after updating but everything was working fine. I like some of the changes in the new OS but some I don’t. I must say that the phone seems to lag way more than before. Its even noticeable when just typing on the keyboard. The battery life seems to be worse but that’s just a fly by night opinion. Anyway it seems this build is not as solid as it is on other phones. However I have no problems with my internal memory and the phone has not bricked. Flash 10.1 is very nice to have but the flash video is extremely choppy and hardly useable on most websites. I hope the next update fixes more of these problems than it creates.

Bought phone in late November, updated to 2.2 in mid December. Phone rebooted several times the next day but was otherwise working fine. Then a few days later phone rebooted and internal SD card was erased (all apps/photos/etc gone) but still working. Took it back to Wireless Wave at Square One in Mississauga and they agreed to swap it for a brand new one since it was less than 30 days old, but they had none in stock. Phone died Xmas eve so I was stuck until WW got more in stock the next week. Swapped for new phone with 2.2 pre-installed and has been working OK since then. Kudos to Wireless Wave for agreeing to swap the phone before it died, and also when it died after the 30 day period.

I have updated samsung vibrant to froyo by using kies mini…. there is an issue with this upgrade.. when i restarted my phone, it start rebooting again and again and failed to boot up properly… Can any one knows how to revert back to android 2.1?

  • HugoLeSage

My wife and I both have the Vibrant from Bell, mine is older and has 2.1, hers is 2.2 since she just got it. I tried to use the Kies on my laptop, it never finishes connecting although the device says connected. I thought it might be a problem with Vista 64 or something else. I just connected my wife's device and it connected within seconds. So I'm thinking it is the phone itself. I even reset the device to the factory defaults but still no luck. I guess Froyo 2.2 is never gonna make it into my Vibrant…
