Apple TV: Long Rental Times and HDMI Problems – Are you affected?

By Posted 2 Dec 2010, 08:43

We have some worrying reports to bring you now, as we have been hearing that some users are experiencing problems on Apple TV, related to long rental time waits on the Apple Store, and also connectivity issues related to HDMI.

According to this report from Apple Insider, the problems are affecting owners of the second generation Apple TV box, as complaints have been mounting up on the official Apple support forums, with users clearly having problems with Apple’s recently released device.

Some users have experienced strange wait times for HD rentals, with some content even asking users to wait ’3,000 minutes’ before it started to load, despite the fact that other content such as trailers and HD Netflix movies started playing a few minutes later.

Furthermore, we are once again hearing reports of HDMI issues, with users complaining about color and picture quality on certain TV models, similar to a previous problem which we told you about here.

To add further frustration to Apple TV owners, a recent software update to the system doesn’t appear to have fixed these problems, meaning that Apple will once again have to release another update to get things sorted. Do you have a problem with your 2G Apple TV? If so, get in touch with us.

I purchased a new Apple TV a few days ago. I took it home and began the setup process. A message said there was an update so I let that run and after it rebooted I started the setup again. In the middle of entering my account name and number the screen went black and then the iTunes logo and a USB graphic appeared. The status LED on the front of the Apple TV began blinking rapidly. The owner's guide indicates that mean "Having problems". Really?

I returned it to the store a a couple of hours after I purchased it, told my tale and they replaced it with a another one immediately. The new one has been working perfectly.

FWIW this is the first in a long line of Apple products I've purchased over the years that I have ever had to return.

2nd Gen Apple tv shows trailers and tv shows bought in itunes but will not show rented movies – display says HDMI not supported ? Can anyone help ?

  • Jerry

Just installed 2nd Gen Apple TV and performed the update. I can easily view my photos from iPhoto, and listen to iTunes from my MAC running both through my big screen LCD and home theater sound system. I rented one HD movie and had all kinds of problems "waiting" for the movie to load. Kept getting "Your movie will be ready to view in 3 hours" that kind of stuff. Could not view immediately. That's the only complaint so far. Good picture, no installation or other on-going issues.

The new update has ruined the picture I get from Netflix and the streaming freezes every thirty or so minutes. Great one Apple! Tell me Steve, am I holding it wrong?

bought Apple TV as a christmas gift. bought movie earlier today to watch tonight. supposedly downloaded but when we went to watch it says it will take 120 mins to download. got all the right components, but still not working adequately. bummed about this purchase.

There is definitely a problem somewhere. I purchased my first streaming rental last night (12/26/2010), and 2G ATV indicated that it will start downloading in 10 hours! My internet speed is around 10 mbps and was tested at the time of the streaming problem. I emailed Apple immediately, mainly asking for a refund. Still waiting on that. Very disappointing.

Bought Apple TV for Christmas. My HDTV only has one HDMI input. I use the Dish receiver as one source and now the Apple TV as the other source. However, purchased a switcher to be able to switch HDMI from either source, but Apple TV will not show a picture on the HDTV. Tried to use my VGA input on the HDTV and still no video signal from the Apple TV. Tried a DVI adapter cable from HDMI to another DVI input on the HDTV, still no video signal coming across from Apple TV. Called the Palo Alto store, spoke with a tech there. He said there is nothing they can do about it, alluded that I might try a splitter. I am not sure that will work with a HDMI signal. Any suggestions?

Bought apple TV2 a few days ago and i cant tell how disappointed I am – we are trying to rent movies and the download time is over 500 minutes – the movie will stop constantly. Very frustrating to say the least. Wish I could return it. I am a big apple fan and i cant believe they would release a product that is so bad!

I can watch movies just fine on Netflix. But, when I try to rent a movie from Apple. I get messages stating I will be waiting 320 minutes.

  • Sorim

Bought an aTV2 yesterday and had the same problem, couldn't download a movie, kept saying it will take an unbelievable amount of time to download the movie. After reading the previous comments I fell frustration and I am very disappointed

I have an ATV with 160 gig hard drive and have been renting, buying and viewing movies fine up until last night 1/15/2011. Bought the social network and rented restrepo and I keep getting the message (on a 720 TV) HDMI does not support this content, use component video which is lesser quality. I bought the movie Salt, viewed it and the next day the error message come up.

APPLE PLEASE FIX YOU DEFECTIVE PRODUCT!

Netflix works, iTunes does not on Apple TV. Apple should be sued for false advertising regarding a "streaming" product. I hate apple tv 2. Ive written Apple directly with no response from the iTunes team. I had to ask for 3 credits for movies that never started playing after waiting 1 hour.

I have issues with watching movies from the Apple Istore on my Itv, I can watch netflix streaming movies without a problem the Apple store movie rentals stall, hang or will not play, I check my download speeds, my network speed, all are fine. I feel cheated as I pay for the Apple movie rentals and I can not watch the movies when I try to play them. It really SUX..

I'm having all these issues, and just sent apple email they'll ignore. The first HDMI cable gave error messages, saying it didn't support this content. I then plugged in my $80 Sony Cable (that i got dirt cheap, I'm not dumb enough to pay for an over priced cable) and it worked fine. For a day. Now intermittently I'll get teh same message, have to power off the Apple TV and restart it and it will work.

But waiting 100 minutes for a 42 minute TV show to "Stream" is unacceptable. I won't even attempt a full length movie, and have read where people waited 4 hours. Not very on demand. If I can still return this thing, I might.

I had all kinds of problems – slow download of movies (3 hours), then after I paused and tried to re-start movie was told my movie woul be ready in over 2 hours. Netflix did not work well either – constantly stopping for buffering.

I returned it to the store and was given a refund, but only after they made me go through my trash to find the original cardboard box it came in.

    Not a good experience

No problem with the set up, all well until the next night when I turned it on and got a blank screen. Just nothing. The next day I got the menu and settled down to watch a movie. Pressed play and was told the movie would take five hours to download……watched it on cable "on demand" and that works fine. This thing is going back to Best Buy today and they better not try to give me a restocking charge, then it's me against Amex, I guess! Surprised at Apple for selling this crap.

  • Tkay

Yes Apple TV2 has download issues! I have been working with one of Apple's Senior Advisors for almost a month now and he is stumped as am I. I purchased the ATV2 after Christmas 2010. Have yet been able to watch a movie without download issues. I think they need to do a recall.

  • bexx

Im about to throw this frickin thing in the bin. Cant download movies, says it will take 7 hours to download, leave it downloading, gets half way through and then I went to bed so turned it off, switched it back on the next morning to continue downloading and it had started at the beginning again. 7 hours to download a movie. agghhhh I want my money back, this is driving me crazy. and no solutions on line anywhere – definitely due for a recall!

issues, i downloaded fast five yesterday around 5, download time 3 hours, so around eight last night we all sat down to watch, pressed play, time bar apperared, then loading, maybe 2 minutes nothing, then 4 hours download time..
so we left, this morning i checked the movie, downloaded, yes!!! played, so i paused to watch later, resume from the beginning , then a pause, then told download 4 hours…
how frustrating, is going straight back…
black screen sometimes, hdmi wiggle at the back to get it to come on…
1st generation to problems at all, just a little hot sometimes..
