Mozilla Firefox Crashing Constantly: Are You Affected?

By Jamie Pert - Nov 30, 2010

Some Mozilla Firefox users are experiencing a problem which is extremely infuriating, basically the popular web browser crashes constantly no matter what web page is loading.

If you check out this link you can see that 26 users are reporting the same problem, it is unclear what is causing this problem, however there are millions of Firefox users out there therefore there maybe thousands of people affected.

The problem does not seem to be add-on related as starting the browser in safe mode still results in the crash, also updating to the latest version of the browser doesn’t fix the issue either.

The user who originally reported the issue is running Mozilla Firefox 3.6.12 and Windows 7 64-bit, therefore it may only be affecting users with this exact configuration.

We would love to hear whether the same problem is affecting you, if so let us know in the comments section beow and tell us a little about your computer configuration.

As we hear more regarding this problem we will do out utmost to keep you posted.

I switched to Firefox from Google Chrome because of Google’s privacy issues. It’s actually faster but I am not happy with constant crashes. I’m running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Fix it, Firefox!

  • tman

I am having the same issue after I installed the latest update, I am running window 8.1 Pro / 64

  • patrick

Same problem firefox on fedora 20, 64 bit version

Crashes constantly. Can’t get anything done in any kind of hurry…even crashing as I’m typing. What a pain!

I have been having the same problem here and it doesn’t matter what computer I am using. Today I am on laptop…using Vista…and everything is up to date and it has crashed continuously for several hours now. My desktop computer is Windows XP and continuously have the same problem with ff crashing.

  • Silver

I’ve got the same problem here doesn’t matter the website either. I’m running Win7 fully updated as well as the newest version of FF.

  • crimson

Mine started crashing about a week ago, just at the time when Google went into “prediction” mode and made it impossible to switch it off. The crashes always occur when I am googling.

I am having this issue as well.  I have updated Firefox and am running Windows 7 64 bit.  Sometimes if I leave it alone, it will come out of it.  Other times I have to exit the program completely and restart the browser.  I started using FIrefox because it is a lot faster than IE, but this makes me almost want to start using IE9 again.

  • Yeah, I have the same problem on an Acer Aspire X3400G dual core 3.2gh AMD Athlon II X2 255, 4 gig ram, 64 bit win7 home premium.  Started in 3.6.12 and continued through all updates to newer versions.  IE also crashes as well as Chrome, once again all versions.  Once it crashes, it will continue to do so almost relentlessly.  I had to restart firefox 12 times to get to this page.  If anyone comes up with some kind of fix I’m sure I and many others would like to know, Thank you!

Firefox crashes too much on my laptop… i tried different tactics to get rid of the problem but it was useless.. then a guy on Fixya recommended me this solution: http://backspacetab.com/2011/05/05/firefox-crashe
and after applying the fixes in this guide, now FF is working much better… :-)

Mine started crashing about a week ago. I'm on Mac OS X 10.5. It worked great, and then out of the blue it started crashing about 30 seconds after opening it. However I also have firefox on a Mac OS X 10.4 and there have been no hiccups as of this post. So fingers crossed…

I am on Mac OS X 10.6. It stared crashing yesterday and now won't remain on with just a single window open. I am going to try an uninstall and get a fresh copy, but other folks say that doesn't help either.

FF 4 crashes several times a day on XP Pro SP3. Have run in Safe Mode, un & re-installed, disabled all add-ons. Still no luck. Any combination of websites can cause it. Have seen crash with a single site open or 25.

  • Bo Dunn

Windows 7 – 64-bit and Firefox 4. I upgraded today to see if that might help the problem of crashing; it did not.

  • Rouffian

I am on Windows 7 32 bit and Firefox 3.6.13 It crashes between 5 and 10 times a day and usually while I am working on my other PC, so nothing is happening. I am considering Opera, though I am not keen on the interface.

I usually just have the google live window open, so it could be the updates from that, but it also just crashed while the only window open was news.bbc.co.uk.

This is also happening to my daughter and wife, using different PC, (one win 7, and one Vista) and to at least two of my colleagues.

Recent problem in the past several weeks on 2 different computers running Windows XP. Will often crash even while just sitting idle in the background. Tabs properly restored on restart.

  • pitiviperx

Freshly installed windows 7, 64bit .No add-ons for firefox, and it still crashes on a daily basis. If i leave Mozilla open on any web-page long enough without browsing, next time i want to do anything (go to any website) it freezes and have to stop it using the task manager (end process). Firefox is using up, nearly 2gb of ram when it crashes. It is very annoying to have to do this everyday.

It has crashed on me at least 6 times this morning. I used to really like firefox, and it’s great for web developers, but this is getting well out of hand.

I am windows 7 64 bit, 3.6.13. It also crashes on my Windows XP machine. Pah.

It appears to be pretty random (this addressed to the person talking about cars not starting). So it’s a bit tricky to try to tell you anything helpful. The point is that there IS no pattern – well none that I can reproduce anyway. I have quite a few add-ons installed (web developer, firebug, colour picker that kind of thing).

Maybe if there is a way of turning a debugger on for catching output at point of failure I could help….

I am having the same crash problem. Screen jut freezes when I try to navigate to a different site. Comp. Windows 7 64 Bit i3 processor and Firefox 3.6.13

  • Bluedun

I have windows 7, 64 bit and for no obvious reason Firefox has started to constantly crash on starting it up. I have used Firefox for a long time and this problem has only just happened. It is completely unusable and no amount of proper uninstall and reinstall makes any difference.

  • David

I just bought a new Toshiba Tecra Windows 7 64 bit laptop and installed Firefox 3.6.12 for the first time. It crashed every time I tried to run it. I uninstalled, reinstalled, same thing.

  • maria

i'm having this same problem. i have windows xp and the latest version of firefox. whenever i try to load a new website, firefox crashes. i can navigate within the same site (for example; i can go to facebook and check different profiles without it crashing) but the second i go to a different site like google or netflix, firefox crashes. this has been happening for about two weeks, and it is really annoying! does anyone know why this is happening?

    @Sam367'

What websites or problems are you experiencing becuase so far these are just vague comments and the report does not go in detail.

If you click on the link to see the comment you read,
"Firefox crashes constantly and unexpectedly no matter what webpage I am on. Happens in safe mode also. I've tried updating, disabling add-ons, same crashes happen. I have followed the generic crash troubleshoot list and nothing helps. This is so infuriating and frustrating.
    I am using Win7 64bit."

This comment has no background information nor any steps to reproduce. This can lead me to conclude that this specific user has no knowledge of what he or she is talking about. Imagine if this user unknowingly has malware or some trojan in thier PC or network that creates these problems, a change in a setting, blocked website, buggy dial-up, additional plug-ins, so much cuases that a vague comment menas nothing.

I have a problem with my car not starting…can anyone tell me why it doesn't start?

"The problem does not seem to be add-on related as starting the browser in safe mode still results in the crash, also updating to the latest version of the browser doesn’t fix the issue either."
Yes I too agree with you I am using Firefox 4. 07 beta & my Win 7 Action Center also reported to me if I wish to intimate Microsoft. I have IE-9 too everything latest still the problem
Yesterday Firefox has resumed my toolbar in Firefox 4. 07 beta too: I thing they would sort out. Teething problem, shifting to cloud based browser & use of HTML5 replacing Addins, Add-ons & Plugins with CSS3 or other building-blocks of modern technology could be the reasons I suppose
Do let me know if I could do something to avert such crashes Mr. Jamie Pert

Are you serious? This is news?

It’s called Having A Corrupt profile folder!!

Some bad add ons actually leave corrupt pieces of code in Firefox that does not get deleted, even safe mode gets affected! that why you may need to “clean install Firefox”

This is such an old issue addressed countless times. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_firefox.

In other news, IE and Chrome 28 and 23 people respectively report have problems ….

  • Joyce

Yes, I have been having same problem for long time…today I tried to post on a website, that I frequently post on,….the link would not post and I received a "abode crashed" message. No matter how many times and ways I have tried to download and/or re-install adobe, it will not work. This is on Mozilla 3.6.12; other browsers (IE and Chrome) work fine and like is ok. It has to be a problem with Mozilla only. I am running Vista.

  • avanna

man it kept freezing on my comp. i was trying to listen to music on youtube and check my facebook but it wouldnt stay active. constant crashes. i love mozilla and really didnt wanna use enternet explore but thats wat i'm using now……………………….. i have a windows vista 7 or 8

  • mbs

windows 7, I use Facebook, yahoo and gmail regularly. also Photoshop, which is connected to Adobe. Last night it scared me because it didn't just crash, I couldn't see content on open pages. Uninstalled it for now. thanks.

  • firefoxuser

yes!!! Firefox crashes at least once in a one week period. I have tried reinstalling it and updating it w/out and unnecessary add-ons. Hopefully this will help. Thank you.
