Facebook Email Launch: Taking on Hotmail, Gmail & Yahoo!

By Posted 15 Nov 2010, 16:52

According to numerous sources around the web, Facebook are set to launch their own version of an email service that is said to rival that of Google’s email service ‘Gmail,’ Microsoft’s own longstanding brand of ‘Hotmail,’ and Yahoo!

The service is expected to be announced at a Facebook press conference this evening in San Francisco, where they will talk about and unveil a fully-fleged web-based email product, that will provide every single one of the 500 million users with an @facebook.com email address.

The project, known as ‘Project Titan’ is being labelled as a ‘Gmail-killer’ and will be the replacement service for the current messaging system that allows users to privately message one-another from their Facebook accounts.

A Facebook Email service, does make sense considering the amount of users it has, and according to Eden Zoller, principal analyst at Ovum, he thinks that Facebook is “giving them (users) richer ways to do this (to share and communicate) through virtual gifts, games, location and even voice thanks to the recent integration deal with Skype.”

Add Email to the mix, and you can expect to see Facbook tap into a market that is currently dominated by web email products such as AOL, Yahoo, Google and Microsoft.

The question is, will you use Facebook email?

No way, I will not use facebook email. They're taking away features I like (like "wall to wall" so I can see previous posts when responding, and profile boxes), adding in features I don't (like linking my interests/music/etc to pages and then putting that pages crap in my newsfeed), and making it harder for me to find events, edit my friends, and look at what would have been in my profile boxes. And I already have gmail, why would I need facebook email?

Email needs to be reliable. Facebook doesnt knowhow to run a reliable sevice

  • Dilly

Not sure this is going to take off.
I have trust issues with Facebook and would never have an e-mail account with them.

everything we currently use for social networking generally in one place?

good for ease of use. bad if it gets hacked etc

  • Jim

No. They have zero respect for privacy and I don't want them in my personal business that deeply.

  • Petey

Already use their message service . ..whats the problem??

  • Kirk

I'll be using it. I think it's a good idea. Could end up being you only get emails from friends or approved applications and services. Thus avoiding viagra adverts in your inbox. If you want to subscribe to a newsletter or whatever, you simply add that service to your Facebook account. Yay, way less spam.

WHen is it happening? I want to be ready to get a good address! It is a little worrying about them being able to use further info about you… and that facebook itself isn't super reliable, but generally it's a very cool idea.

  • NotTelling

    No. I like privacy >.<
