Samsung Vibrant: Android 2.2 Froyo ROM Update – Build Download Unstable?

By Posted 9 Nov 2010, 10:21

We have some important news for those of you with a Samsung Vibrant handset on T-Mobile, as while we can confirm that a new Android 2.2 Froyo ROM has leaked for the device, it is said to be unstable at the moment and users should approach with caution.

As reported from Android Central, the download was available over the weekend and was also compatible with the Samsung Epic 4G. However, before you go and download it, you should be aware that there are notable problems with the new build.

These include an issue with the phone’s radio at the moment, and a collection of other minor hiccups which may annoy you after installing. If you have experience in this field though and would still like to give it a shot, you’ll find the download over at XDA Forums here. Confirmed features include GPS and WiFi calling.

For those of you willing to install this, let us know how your handset fairs afterwards.

I have installed the 2.2 on my Vibrant, and it was AMAZING!!! Everything worked better than my 2.1 GPS, Data, all work stellar. Only one small issue I had was with the calendar app didn’t work right, which the developers over at the XDA knows about. Other than that, everything works GREAT!

    • Cool_Robert

I'm running onyx on mine right now from teamwhiskey.com. It's a 2.2 build with some of those bugs that they mentioned above already eradicated! Go Android!

  • Biraj

My battery dies lot faster, using this froyo…..back to 2.1….hope we will get official version pretty soon….

  • David

I installed AOSP Ish 1.1 ROM and it ran fine. But I must say that there are a lot more bugs than are in the stock 2.1 version. The bugs in the 2.2 version I downloaded were small but could be annoying (had to pull the battery out a few times). I flashed back to stock through ODIN and am going back to stock.

I have installed 2.2 and there are a few issues I've noticed. I think the major annoyance is that the swype keyboard doesn't know basic english words that are used in every day conversation so those words have to by typed with stacatto taps… annoying.

The other major issue that I've noticed is that you basically have to force it to sync with social networking contacts… it doesn't do this by default. You actually have to tell it to download the friend.

Other than those two issues, I love it and I wouldn't go back to 2.1 just to get rid of those issues. I will be happy to see T-Mo release the official so I can move over to something a little more stable. But at least now I don't have to wait! :)

  • Daniel

Stop saying "I installed 2.2" you numbnuts–we don't give a damn. The only thing we care about is HOW the hell you got the ROM.

    • Tony

      LMAO that was hilarious!!!!!!!

http://www.TeamWhiskey.com is where you get the ROM. I have it installed. I've had problems related to the SDCARD but that was down to me playing around with updates. You can use ODIN if you get stuck and it seems like you bricked your phone.. I am using Obsidian v4.2. Running 2.2 firmware. Works great. Email me for any questions regarding update.

    • paul

i got the ROM but I can not make it work. help please

  • Ezra

Wow Daniel, calling others numbnuts… Scroll back to the article and follow the link to XDA Developers. Or do a google search for it. Or better yet, go call your mom and ask her to apologize for not teaching you how to think. ;-)

  • Gianni

nice ezra, i'm no genious but it's a pretty obvious find if one has a backbone and access to the internet. hey daniel, look up how to communicate with others, better you take a course on etiquitte or understanding stupidity and how you live with it. u think anyone here is getting paid for the hours upon hours they will work to test these leaks so unappreciative punks like you can use them safely, not everyone can just yell for mommy when "my phone doesn't work anymore i fried it cuz i'm stupid or it's google's fault, let's go to the mall and get me a new one"

  • Chris

    He means Adobe Flash Player.

I just got off the phone with Samsung after talking to T-Mobile. According to Samsung rep, there WILL NOT be a 2.2 FROYO update to the Samsung Vibrant phones! He did however tell me that T-Mobile will be rolling out a new Samsung phone which will carry the new 2.3 Gingerbread software and to contact T-Mobile when the new phone will be available. This is crap people! Basically every single one of us that purchased Samsung Galaxy S, is screwed, we cannot get flash player, we will not have access to any of the current information available.
I was just told by a T-Mobile rep (on phone now) that says I was sold a phone 2 1/2 mos ago that is over a year old! Out of box, they sold me an old phone. She has the same phone with 2.2 and receives updates regularly! Waiting for her to come back on line, but one way or another, my daughter and I will have the updated phones!!!!!
Good luck to everyone out there dealing with this crap!

Where can i download android 2.2 for my samsung vibrant?… Help cuz im really sick of android 2.1

  • Rod C

I have the new 2.2 version for my Vibrant, downloaded from Teamwhicky. Works great, but only problem is I lost the MobiTV app, and cannot get it back. Apparently is is part of the T-Mobile package and not available separately. Tried to install from mobitv site, but says it cannot as it is already installed. Any idea how to get this app back?

    Thanks

    RC

I have been running the leaked TMO 2.2 ROM for about 2 months now, and I must say that it's been pretty solid for me. Battery life is far better than it was on 2.1, and everything is snappier. I can never ever go back to 2.1, and given the problems that Samsung is having in releasing the official one, I may never upgrade to that either. This is an awesome ROM as it is.

  • gasim

    Hi,

Can anybody tell how to upgrade vibrant 2.1 to 2.2 while keeping unlocking information? I am using an unlocked SIM free, carrier free Vibrant outside USA. Pls help me. Also tell me how to install additional applications and transferring contacts from another phone to my vibrant

    Thanks
    Gasim

  • Maggie
