PwnageTool and Limera1n Jailbreak: Untethered for iOS 4.1 and 4.2

It looks like the PwnageTool jailbreak is getting better by the day, especially for those who haven’t already jailbroken their device on iOS 4.1, as it has just been reported that the tool will be untethered, and that it will jailbreak iOS 4.2 too!

As reported from RedmondPie, it was previously thought that an untethered option wouldn’t be available on iOS 4.2, as Apple would of patched things up by then, but a recent tweet by iPhone Dev-Team member Musclenerd suggests otherwise.

”Think we’ve figured out a way to extend PwnageTool + limera1n + @comex hacks to untethered JBs for all future A4 firmwares ”

In simpler terms, it is great news for those of you who are yet to jailbreak. It means that even if Apple come up with a solution to block the likes of GreenPois0n and Limera1n on iOS 4.2, users can still use the upcoming PwnageTool jailbreak to remain untethered on iOS 4.2.

As for release, it is still planned for Sunday unless things change dramatically. For those that are still asking for an unlock method on iOS 4.1, once you jailbreak with PwnageTool you can then unlock using ultrasn0w.

If I already used Limera1n for jailbreak, can I use Pwnage for unlock?

I don't get it. If i am in 4.1 and use Pwnage Tool to jailbreak how would i be able to unlock it with ultrasnow? I don't think the current ultrasnow supports 2.10.0 baseband…. Anyone?

The purpose of pwnage tool is to update to custom firmware to retain your current version of the baseband which is currently only unlockable if you never updated to the stock 4.1 FW. If you're jailbroken on 4.1 using limera1n or geenpois0n, then you've updated to the stock 4.1 FW which means you're out of luck until the next ultrasn0w comes out. In my case, I'll be updating from 4.0 to 4.1 using pwnage, thus my older baseband will keep, and I can still unlock.

if u jailbrake with limerain or anything else it updates ur baseband thus ultrasn0w doesnt work

it preserves the old baseband so u can unlock with ultrasnow. ultrasnow sayd they are not going to try to crack the new baseband until ios4.2 comes out

I dont understand? I already jailbreak my ipod 3g using limerain then i used green poison again. Now there is another pwnagetool again? For wat purpose is tis and do i have to used it even if i jb my device? Hope for the answer. Newbie here..
