Limera1n by Geohot: How to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 Devices on Mac

We have some good news for those of you who would like to try out Geohot’s latest jailbreak on Mac computers, as we now have a full how-to guide, showing you how to install Limera1n on your iOS 4.1 device.

Just like the Windows version, Limera1n for Mac supports a collection of iOS 4.1 devices. These include the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G / 3G and also the Apple iPad.

The tutorial comes to you courtesy of RedmondPie, who states that the process is actually the same as one would follow for installing onto Windows.

Running an iPhone4, upgraded from 4.0.1 to 4.1, while preserving the baseband at 01.59.00, using the suplementary guide provided in the above link on how to use TinyUmbrella, all in OSX. I found the TinyUmbrella guide a little bit unclear because no where did it mention you needed to download the 4.1 update .ipsw file, it just tells you to use it, so that was a little confusing. I instead followed this guy's videoguide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20JrPSsSN6w in it he walk's you through upgrading to 4.1 while preserving baseband using TinyUmbrella and Jailbreaking with Limera1n on OSX.

I got it to work on my first try, though I did have some trouble with TinyUmbrella kicking the phone out of DFU mode. I click the button and it went gray but the phone never responded and TinyUmbrella just kind of hung until I stopped the TSS server and restarted it. Things got a little hairy as multiple instances of my phone started showing up in TinyUmbrella and when I finally found the active one and kicked it out of DFU, it was stuck somewhere between activation and DFU. It was still showing the 'plug into usb' screen, but the slide lock was sort of visible in the background and when I slide it open I could hear the phone working and the network notifications showed up, like ATT 3G in the upper left corner. I think I rebooted and got the same thing, and unfortunately it was about 2am at this point so I don't really remember how I got it out of that mode, but I think I might have hit OK to the button in iTunes asking if I wanted to restore the device that was in DFU, that or I kicked it out of DFU in TinyUmbrella again.

Either way I finally got it back into the OS, jailbroke it with the OSX limera1n client on my first attempt, installed Cydia, then restored all my apps and music to the phone with iTunes and I was good to go.

Also, random note for those of you who use MobileTerminal, the build in Cydia is outdated and not iOS4 compatible, it will crash on launch.
