Let’s just take a little breather from the snowball of information that we have had concerning Windows Phone 7 devices today, and concentrate more on what to expect with all the launch day apps and games that Microsoft and its partners have been talking about besides the phones themsevles.
Games – As ever, games will play an important role for the Windows Phone 7 platform and what better way to kickstart things with the release of the classic Tetris. EA’s popular franchise The Sims 3 will also be available this fall, and is expected to replicate that of the iPhone version complete with Xbox Live support. Another EA classic – Need for Speed: Undercover will appeal to the driving and racing fuel-heads, but if that is too much you can always wheel and deal with Monopoly. For those of you venturing into the realm of the unknown, you can always check out Ilomilo, a basic puzzle game that will be downloadable for free from the Windows Phone marketplace by the end of the year. Screenshots look impressive might I add.
Media – AT&T release U-verse Mobile for $9.99 per month, considerably cheaper than the iPhone version. Slacker is a HTC HD7 app on T-Mobile USA which is a subtitute for anyone not interested in Zune Pass and will integrate with the native’s Music hub. Netflix, T-Mobile TV and everyone’s favourite movie database IMDB makes an appearence (and it looks 10x better than the web version!).
Commerce – Microsoft and its partners are expected to shake things up a little when all the WP7 phones go live, with the iPhone and Android based handsets having to give up some marketshare in favour of the WP7 devices. eBay will potentially be a big part of that with their specially tailored app aswell as another movie-based app called Fandango. Expect more commerce apps to come in the near future.
Social Networking – The world of social networking is always going to be a major part of any smartphone, with Windows Live, Facebook and Twitter all making a stamp on the WP7 market. Twitter though, does look impressive and will no doubt be hugely popular.
