By Posted 8 Oct 2010, 05:21

We have some good news for those of you with a Samsung Vibrant handset on T-Mobile, as the carrier has just confirmed that an OTA update has just gone live, fixing up some problems related to GPS on the device.

As reported from BGR, you may not know that Samsung actually has a separate Twitter account for their Galaxy S smartphones, and they used to it to confirm the update for T-Mobile Vibrant users. Here it is in full:

”JI6 OTA now released for Vibrant! Watch for a message on your phone letting you know the update is ready for you! Thanks for your patience!”

Don’t worry if you haven’t received this ‘J16′ update yet, as the rollout process is still ongoing as we speak. For those of you who have already installed it, has the GPS problems been fixed for you?

Let us know about this, and any other changes you have noticed after updating.

It did what? No difference on my phone, same build #. Where the heck is froyo?

  • Fred Flintstone

    Yup, mine works now

Got this update overnight. Never had GPS lock in under 20 min. This morning I had lock in 10 seconds. Worked great

  • Lesa

Thank goodness yes it worked. I did have to rip and reinstall Google Maps but it works like a charm now.

They also added a Task Manager to the multi-tasking menu and removed the LBS Test Menu.

GPS works now also media hub and a few extras i think they improved the hd camcorder and has a task manager now….

The update has changed the way you see your music on your phone. Before when you played your music and turned your phone to the side it changed it into a row of CD's. Now when you turn your phone the play list looks the same but fits in landscape. I like it better.

Got it today. GPS works now for real and file IO seems a lot faster. I am an android developer with an app that records and draws GPS tracks and I never could get my own app to work on Vibrant. Got the update this morning and it worked like a champ. It could have been faster, but but otherwise this looks like an excellent update.

    How about android 2.2?

I received the update on Oct 7th and although it fixed some of the spelling errors and changed some of the notifications and features for the better the GPS is still a bit buggy. It took about 30 seconds to find a satellite and lock (Better then before, sometimes it would take my phone several min) and I have had fewer disconnects but the accuracy still is not very good. Sometimes it shows my location on the next road over and jumps around a bit. An improvement for sure but know where near what you would expect.

Update: This morning it was really cloudy and rainy and it took my phone over 2 min to lock. This phone rocks but the gps still sucks. Totally hit or miss. After using it for a couple days now it will lock any where from 2 min to 5 sec. but accuracy is no good.

Media hub is now open though. Kind of cool.

My battery life is totally worse now! For some reason this update DRAINS by battery! Anyone else notice that?

Samsung has finished testing Froyo for all galaxy s phones. Read about it here! http://wirelessandmobilenews.com/2010/10/samsung-

Doesn't say when T-Mobile will finish it's own testing but this is some really good news!

Anyone here from the greater Seattle area get the update yet? You would think living in the greater Seattle area (one of the technology capitals of the U.S) it would happen around here sooner than later…..

  • Ken

I have the same problem with the battery draining since the update. Is there something new running that uses the battery in the background?

    • Haley

It could possibly be the new Task Manager. check and see if you have any background apps (you aren't knowingly using) running.

I updated my phone this morning, now my phone appears to be bricked. I did NOT root my phone (I don't even know how to) and I only installed apps from T mobile's market. My phone will not connect to the Internet or allow me to make or receive any phone calls. Very frustrating to say the least. I have been on T mobile's forums and there appears to be SEVERAL others with the same problem. I hope T mobile fixes this ASAP!

You can now udate JI6 using Kies mini! I havn't done it yet but will in the morning. Google (updating using Kies mini) no joke!

  • RaymondP

I DID IT! TOTALLY GOT JI6 THROUGH KIES MINI! IT'S NOT BUGGY LIKE THE FULL VERSION AND WAS EASY TO DO. GET RID OF THE FULL KIES FIRST IF YOU HAVE IT, ALL ITS FILES! GOOGLE 'UPDATE USING KIES MINI' THEN FOLLOW THOSE DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTER!

Not much difference on my Samsung Vibrant regarding the GPS. The HD video software and the Task Manager or a good addition though.
