We first reported to you yesterday about the Hyundai Sonata recall over a possible improperly assembled steering column, and the problem was known about a few months ago. The cost of the recall could be quite a cheap one for the carmaker.
According to David Sarno of the Los Angeles Times, Hyundai only know of less than ten problems reported by owners concerning the steering on the new Sonata. Towards the end of August The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating the issue after some owners reported that they had lost the ability to steer the cars.
A spokesman for the company – Jim Trainor – said that the loss of steering was a worst-case scenario for the defect. Mainly owners were reporting of a “looseness”, or heard a sound when turning, and were on cars which had covered less than 1,000 miles.
The actual repair is quite a simple one if needed, the steering is inspected to see if the bolt is loose or threaded improperly, and Trainor said it may take as long as an hour, and added “As far as recall costs go, this would be toward the lower end.” The recall concerns Sonatas made between December 11 2009, and September 10 2010.
