Fighting Games will Rule 2011 – Who needs Call of Duty?

By Alan Ng - Sep 25, 2010

If you grew up playing video games in the 90s, you’ll know that it was one hell of an experience for fans of fighting games. In the era of the SNES and Megadrive, gamers were treated to Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games in their finest hour – and that is all set to make a return in 2011 on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

If the 90s belonged to beat-em-ups, then this period of gaming is probably all about First-person shooters. Luckily, developers like Capcom, Namco and Midway (or Netherrealm Studios) have decided enough is enough and its now time to bring back the good times with some upcoming titles, all of which will be available in that standard 2D format that everyone loves.

It is fair to say that it didn’t really work when Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat had various 3D games out, so I’m really pleased to see them returning to their roots with the likes of Street Fighter X Tekken and Mortal Kombat 9. Don’t forget that we have just had a confirmation of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 too, so 2011 will really be the rebirth of 2D fighting games.

Mortal Kombat 9 looks immense, and just what the doctor ordered with their decision to make it the most violent game yet. Street Fighter X Tekken looks like an ambitious project, combining two of the most popular fighting games period – but let’s see how it pans out before we all make early judgements on the game.

Then of course we have the little matter of Marvel Vs Capcom 3 – arguably the most popular franchise ever. I think Capcom was testing the water with their arcade release of MvC2 onto the Xbox 360 and PS3, and now that they know fans still love it – they decided to go full blast with MvC3. We’ve had plenty of characters confirmed for the game so far, but since it’s not out till Spring, theres still time for plenty of additions yet, and even more via DLC after release.

This is not a criticism of FPS games just to let you know, but if you grew up in the 90s, watching people play Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat in arcades was the coolest thing around at the time. I’m spoilt for choice on which fighting game I’ll be picking up next year – maybe I’ll just get them all.

And maybe the death of 3D fighting games? man I hate 2D fighting games. If you have actually palyed games in 90s then you must remember how we felt playing tekken 3, Soul Edge, Soul Calibur and virtua fighter 3. I thing the Idea of a 2D Mortal Kombat in 2011 is as bad as a 2D Call of Duty!

Don't for get Arcana Heart 3, Capcom vs Marvel 3, King of the Fighters XIII and they look amazing. Yes the were the worst platform type game as there were no updates but now in 2011 there are and they look amazing .This is only for the real hardcore gamers the real old school gamers. I hope Capcom comes out this a new Capcom vs SNK this Street Fighter X engine PLS!

omg these games have never been anygood since the days of snes and megadrive….at that time there was nothing better!!….i think they need to realise that people and technology has moved on…there is no call for this ancient type of game!!

May i disagree with your little complaint there are some that love the old shit. Im 18 and still love the snes the nes and n64 All who agree with me on that give me a HELL YEAH! any way these game defined all of our fighters/fighter rpg type games so before you go sayin we dont need the ancient type of game they are all so revamped gaphics new controlls more than likely new characters other than the new mortal kombat witch is actuly not nine it's 1 2 and 3 all mashed togather, so i agree with this 2011 will be going to the fighters games.

  • brendan

nope they are some of the worst game types! but then again that's just my opinion. Also i'm a consumers and the success of a game is deicided by the consumers
