Similac Formula Recall 2010: Baby Illnesses Reported

By Updated on

A few days ago it was reported that Abbott was to recall certain Similac products from its baby formula range, which to many parents is seen as one of the most concerning recalls of 2010. Since then there have been reports of baby illnesses, and although parents believe it to be a side effect from the contaminated product, we cannot confirm that this is true.

Some parents are also annoyed at the lack of information that is available. However, we decided to take a look at the Similac website, and it seems as though they have now started to offer more information on this worrying recall.

According to one article on KCCI Des Monies, one parent noticed that her five-month old child was having issues his tummy.

We are not certain how much truth there is to this report, as Abbott has said in the past that they have not had any reports of illnesses due to their Similac formula.

For those of you who are worried if your baby formula is affected by the recall, Alan Ng has given information on how you can download the lot numbers. When the recall was first announced the Similac Lot Numbers page faced huge demand and crashed, but things are now up and running.

Do you have any reports of illnesses due to this baby formula?

Throughout the 2-months, my son's entiring eating/digesting Similac experience has been painfully obvious to me, and him, as well. Being a new parent, and a single Father have been quite a frustruating experience when you can't satisfy your infant's discomfort. His (My Son's) Doctor has been telling me the characteristics are typical with newborns and various formula changes we have made, ALL SIMILAC, to satisfy whatever problems he has been experiencing. After his birth, once we got home, the 3 weeks we waited for WIC program acceptance, I was purchasing Infamil and none of the problems existed. It may be easy for you to say, "you figured out the problem, genius, get him the WIC, and the both of you quit your crying!", and if I had the money it requires out-of-pocket to keep that brand stocked for the next 10-months for my son's comfort, I would! I can't get the doctor to give WIC the "green light" to allow us to get a product, any product, other than Similac for the life of me!

ATTENTION: PEOPLE STILL CONCERNED ABOUT SIMILAC CONTAMINATION!!!…CONT

All I'm getting at I guess is that i'm not convinced that this whole contamination deal HAS BEEN RESOLVED. I don't take anything I have reseached for "face value" despite what the FDA is saying or the manufucturing company that produces Similac, because it's all non-sense. I contacted the 24 hour/7 day hotline that Abbot Labs. has available tonight, and after they said the Lot on my containers were in the clear it was quite apparent to me that my concerns and descriptions of my son's experience were "red flagging" because I was placed on hold several times, for different amount of time, and 1st level rep tuned in to the conversation and eventually took what I perceived to be extreme attention to my information, asked my personal info. like address, name and number, advised me that a Health Advisor would be in contact within 48 hours, and even metioned something about "if the matter deems necessary that they, whoever "they" are would arrange to come to my house and retieve the containers!".. and so and and so forth. Now I can't sleep until they call.

I know different situations require different actions, and the different action require different skills, and training. The rep I spoke to was not trained to handle a call escalated at their own expense, and I was politely asked AGAIN to hold for more time after my descriptions were being reiterated over and over, probed to be as vivid possible, a call center supervisor who also had limited information known or allowed provide anymore information, and assured me that some advanced level laboratory something would be in contact!!! I undestand legalities and things involved too. but…I have 2 questions. MY QUESTIONS ARE SIMPLE.
    1) IF THE "LOT #" ON ANY OF MY CONTAINERS WERE HONESTLY SAFE, (which I'm sure any combo of #'s I said would have been the "bad ones") than WHY WOULD IT BE NECESSARY FOR ADDITIONAL INTERACTION, WITH SOMEONE ELSE, NOT ANOTHER REP. OR SUPERVISOR GOING TO BE CONTACTING ME WITHIN 48 HOURS?!
    2) IF ALL OF THE CONTAINERS ARE OFF OF THE SHELVES, FDA SAYS IT'S NO HEALTH RISK TO "THE LITTLE BIT OF BEETLE PART" IN THE POWDER THAN WHY IS THERE STILL A 24 HOUR/7 DAY A WEEK "HOTLINE" IN EFFECT?
