IE9 Beta Download: Problems Reported With Internet Explorer 9

By Posted 20 Sep 2010, 16:33

A couple of days ago we thought we would ask you if you were experiencing problems with the recently released Internet Explorer 9 beta, on the whole it seems as if IE9 is a step in the right direction, however there do seem to be a few niggling issues.

Obviously as IE9 is in its beta stages it isn’t going to be perfect, therefore Microsoft are probably sifting through the commonly reported problems as we speak, below we will talk about the problems which we feel are common problems.

At the moment there is no Google Docs compatibility, however this is not really an IE9 problem, instead it seems as if Google Docs has not yet been made compatible for this new browser version.

Most of the problems seem to be related to Adobe Flash, this can result in Flash content not displaying correctly, which sometimes means videos show a black screen whilst the audio playback is fine. Apparently installing this version of Flash resolves all problems.

There also seems to be a bug with the way that IE 9 imports bookmarks/favorites and the favorites bar, when I tried to do this there was no option to import Google Chrome favorites and feeds etc, as I do not use a Firefox, IE8 or Safari I couldn’t see if IE9′s import feature worked.

Did you have problems importing your favorites etc when configuring IE9?

I have a problem with IE9 not working on a WIndows Vista Home Basic computer. I have the details of it at http://www.ie9board.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2 and will continue to track until it is fixed.

Obviously BETA type problems… this isn't news.

  • night

IE9 crash while browsing in here lol

    • Bartman

      indeed :-)

      • guest

        me too
        text overlap too.

  • ie 9 beta

it may be minor, but when i log onto yahoo for fantasy football, the player news part does not pop up when clicked on. nothing happens. you have to open up an entire new tab/window to view the news. on IE 8 the news would pop up on the current window/tab, but it does not on ie 9.

also, does anyone know how to lock the menu bar on ie 9? I know pressing alt temporarily adds a menu bar, but it goes away. thanks

  • jotun

IE9 makes text look awful for me. It's like it's doing partial anti-aliasing.. It's even worse than ClearType. Turning off the "Always Use Clear Type" option doesn't change anything.

  • steve

    Remember when beta meant BETA?????
Reporters are so stupid. Beta is for testing to fix bugggggggggggggs.

    • Jamie Pert

Sorry Steve you missed the second paragraph, here it is for you again “Obviously as IE9 is in its beta stages it isn’t going to be perfect, therefore Microsoft are probably sifting through the commonly reported problems as we speak, below we will talk about the problems which we feel are common problems.”

    • buntyp

Whether reporters are stupid, dumb,or whatever, the Beta business will be necessary for Microsoft, until most folk eventually switch over to some other 'Platform'. I've never heard of or experienced a bunch of folk, taking a 'Software Technology' so deep into the 'Touchy-Feely' PC (politically correct) kind of world, that you can now predict with certainty, that every new Windows up-date, & or up-grades like Explorer 9, will soon drive people crazy, particularly those who have taken the time & effort to integrate 'Google' & all their vastly superior products, into their Windows Platforms, to be hassled by the purposely built-in incompatibilities of any Windows new Products.

I've had Microsoft Security Essentials, after a so-called tune-up, remove, more than once, an entire Program, & one that I was using for 'Project Managing Scheduling', (not how many chicks Charlie sheen had last night), a Program called 'FasTrack Scheduler' , by AEC, as 'Un-Necessary Files'.

I was attacked by a very vicious 'Trojan', well known to some as 'Think Point', & it blew in, not just right past 'Microsoft Security Essentials', but actually 'Piggy-backed' in on it. I, unfortunately, had not renewed my subscription to my regular Anti-Virus Program, by 'ParetoLogic'. I immediately, after managing to sneak-in a way to do a 'System Restore', & isolate that awful, insidious, 'Think Point', I renewed mu subscription to the 'ParetoLogic Anti-Virus' Program, & upon running a 'Scan with it', it picked-up the 'Think-Point' Trojan immediately, & removed it from my Computer.

The real irony is that before 'Bing' or whatever that is supposed to be, I had a personally Configured Page with MSN, called 'My Page'. That after some 'Explorer Up-Grade', disappeared completely. But, guess what, Google, was able to locate & save on their system, that very 'My MSN Page', which when I boot-up every day, is 2 clicks away, just as it had been set-up with MSN, with only one exception, that I can no longer change it's present 'Format', but which I really don't need to do.

Yes, Google, retrieved for me, a now defunct 'My MSN Page', & there is no way in hell I was going to resume with it, from 'Microsoft. But, Bing will probably tell me what 'Obama' had for 'Breakfast', or what he may have said to 'Mary Magdalene' this morning. The 'Twitter Type Way of the future, I suppose. (Just straight down the Greasy Slope)

Running Win 7 64 bit I get a screen that tells me I have to apply specific hot patches to the system, this just minutes after completing a full Windows Update. Specifically, it tells me to download hot patches KB2028551, KB2028560, KB2120976, and KB2259539 which I'm able to do successfully for the first 3 (as 64 bit apps) but then for the last it tells me my system is not designed for ANY of the downloadables. So far, no IE9. Oh well, Firefox and Chrome do just fine. IE has alsways been my third choice. Way to blow it MS!

    • Fred

      Beta, idiot.

  • Yev

No Google Docs compatibility ??? Are you F'N kidding me ??? Every other browser supports Google Docs, but the NEW Microsoft browser doesn't and based on the way your article is written, Google should make Google Docs compatible with IE9 ??? This just shows continued arrogance by Microshit and more of a reason why people will slowly move away from it. I have 5 years ago.

  • Chris

"At the moment there is no Google Docs compatibility, however this is not really an IE9 problem, instead it seems as if Google Docs has not yet been made compatible for this new browser version."

Is that a joke? A website that is "compatible" with all recent previous versions of IE, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome turns out not to be "compatible" with the Beta of IE 9, and according to you it's Google that is at fault.

  • Don

    1) The "- O X" buttons at the top of screen don't show. (It's black as well as the bar).
    2) The "find on this page" doesn't exist any more.
    3) Have to use compatibility view more often because of misplaces menus etc.
    4) Seem to have problems copying text on a page (may be due to compatibility view).
    5) When closing or switching tabs, the previous closed tab still flashes it's content briefly.
    6) Seems to not scroll well on some pages that use flash.

  • knowledgenotebk

It would be helpful to evaluate IE9 with its new capabilities
    (see this URL, http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/
    )

  • Jcorkrum

I do use Chrome and Firefox, and, like you, IE9 does not see Chrome. It also will not import my Firefox bookmarks even though it says it did.

  • abel

When I run the speed tests they run as slow as if I was using any other browser

  • kf4wie

I have had only one problem with IE9, but of course I had no problems with Vista, but Like 7 fine. The problem I had was when logging in to Microsoft Office Live Small Business, IE 9 is not recognized as a browser.

For those who had experienced issues with your IE9 Beta installation I would like to invite you to read over this guide on titled "How to solve Internet Explorer 9 installation problems". There are many tips and tricks to help you get your IE9 running smoothly. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2409098

Please do not require IE 9 beta testers to have a Windows Live ID in order to provide you with feedback. The favorites should be on the left side of the screen – not the right. Or at least give people an IE 8 compatibility mode. I am not a fan of IE 9 beta and if it comes out as it is now in production, I'll go with a competitor.

    • kirsten johnsen

Like it for the most part but having problems accessing an IBM expense reporting site: IE times out after what it deems is more than 2 attempts to access the site. The site does that for security issues. How do I prevent IE9 from leaving the loop?

  • rowlands67

i have installed IE9 to try it out but i am not getting anything on screen, it crashes every time……microsoft windows pops up to try and resolve the problem of why its stopped but after
several attemps its still not working. so i try to close down the program but it wont…it keeps adding tabs every time. looks like google chrome gets my vote and thumbs down to IE9 not happy :-( :-( :-(

    • LizE

      I have the same problem.

  • emeraldsun33

I'm having trouble posting on WordPress. One post took the first draft, then wouldn't let me use my mouse for anything and would keep edits. After updating, the first version would return.
I also could not post any photos, either here or on another blog. I could post photos on photoblog.
I've tried to go back to IE8, but it would download since I have 9. Tried to uninstall, and – this is a first – IE9 does not show up on my programs list from the control panel!!! (My OS is Vista, btw, in case that makes a difference.) I've never seen a program not show up on the program list for installing and uninstalling before.

  • ijmg

i can't select "save as" in the tab….all the downloads go to the default path….mmmmm

  • Guest

mine just kept crashing no matter what i did. thank god for system restore. also i was not impressed with replacing 'internet explorer' with 'the internet'.

  • ChabotCSE

In response to my post that is going through moderation; I just reloaded my page in IE9 and all seems well. I don't know what happened that caused the compatibility mode to kick in, so lets hope it won't decide to turn on 'quirks' mode randomly for unchanged webpage styles.

  • Cobrastyle

Stora problem med att IE9 bara stänger av sig själv, och ständiga error medelanden om att den måste stänga ner sidan pga det och det och det….

  • Mike H

I have Windows 7 Home premium and when I downloaed and installed ie9 beta, the program wouldn't run. It kept on displaying 'IE9 has stopped working'…. I couldn't even go back to IE8. There didn't seem to be anyway to download IE8 for Win7. The only solution was to re-install an image of the drive I took thankfully a few days before. I doubt if I will be returning to 9 anytime soon.

  • Dom

I have a couple problems with the beta; including the crashing but google chrome crashed just as much when i first downloaded it and also facebook doesn't show up like it is supposed to, the chat box is all the way at the top over the facebook toolbar. But it is pretty fast and it imported my bookmarks from chrome and firefox.

  • oli-uk

My advice for what its worth is that if you have a working version of IE whether IE8 or 9 or whatever

    Don’t touch it

Leave it alone so that it can do updates

If you try to upgrade it, downgrade it or even use it for browsing it will probably break and then you can’t do any updates.

Use a different browser for everyday use and leave IE to do updates only

There are lots of browsers to choose from

If you are really keen on using IE then at least download another browser so that when IE stops working you can get some online help.

  • Raoul Duke

I downloaded IE 9 beta about a week ago.. today I finally UNinstalled.. I had many MAJOR issues, not the least of which was my homepage wouldn't even come up for 20 to 30 seconds, It also seemed not even to be compatible with facebook, at least for me. also microsoft was touting at as a great html5 browser.. but it scored a mere 27 as compared to my 231 with google chrome. who does bill think he's fooling? really? himself perhaps?

  • alan

I am unable to use IE9 for Internet banking. My bank blocks it when I attempt transfers.
Probably more to do with my bank not recognizing IE9 than anything else.
Problems with cut and paste HTML into eBay listings. The website seems to ignore any tables used-displaying my body text only. FireFox done the complete cut and paste in the end.
Hope things improve as IE9 is very fast to fire up generally than FireFox.

  • Guest

I couldnt use it at all after downloading and installing it. It kept crashing and saying there was a problem. Had to restore my computer to before i downloaded it. smh

  • captinD

IE 9 is a real pain and hard to uninstall. I need to view several menus and (9) does not allow. Firefox hear I come. Microsoft has really messed up with this.

After downloading IE9 whjen you click on a product picture on my shopping cart, the pop up image is not placed so that approximately half of it is cut off at the bottom of the screen. Opening up my shopping cart using FireFox and clicking on my product pictures, the pictures pop up in the center of the screen as they did before I upgraded to IE9.

I would assume that this is going to happen to customers who click on a product picture who are also ruinning IE9.

    Worst… browser… ever.

Not only can I not type in text fields using Internet Explorer 9, but its tab order is completely wrong.

I don’t know what it is about other users of my computer being so devoted to Internet Explorer that they won’t even consider other browsers, like Firefox and Chrome, which do very much the same thing, and better.

As far as browsers are concerned, I believe it’s definitely time for Microsoft to throw in the towel. Internet Explorer 8 was, and still is, the best version of this browser. Version 9 is to Internet Explorer what (apparently) Vista was to Windows. Terrible, just terrible, and a waste of time and resources.

  • Ruben

IE9 Is so far a Pain in the $$#% I keep loosing internet connection & windows7 is constanly correcting loss.

  • Its_iansin

Since auto update with ie9, not sure which version, trying to get on the internet has been impossible, my sony laptop just freezes and I have to shut it down to clear the page as nothing works once it has started to launch, have had the laptop to a sony sevice centre and there is nothing wrong with my laptop.  Is there some sort of conflict between vista and ie9 if so how do I get it sorted, please help if you can

  • Azprivate

Just recently, I have closed a page only to have it re-open in multiple layers!  Again, and again, and again.  Many hasty posts have blamed Trojans and other forms of malware for this phenom.  Microsoft offers that by disabling my add-ons, I might find the cure.  I am puzzled.  Should I dig through my registry for countless viruses (I just used my recovery partition to reset my computer to factory specs), or should give Microsoft more to Un-Betafy IE9?

  • Dave

I downloaded IE9 from IE8. I am sure it is okay, but not for me. I use Windows 7 so had no problems downloading but IE9 seems to be clumsy a bit chuggy. I am left handed so would like the option of swinging the browser around, do not like the absence of the search panel. Fumbling wastes more time than 0.5s improvement in download speed. Was able to restore IE8 and that feels a whole lot easier to use. I am sure in due course there will be enormous practical improvements. for instance select from a drop down list that part of the browser required and the ability to move the selected section to a preferred area of the screen or perhaps fading it away giving so that the slected page fills the who screen. This must be possible.
