The console battle continues with the news that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 outsold every other console available on the market in the US during August. While everyone has their own personal favorite, the news is good for Microsoft.
Tim Ingham of CVG is reporting that according to NPD data the Xbox sold 356,700 units last month, outstripping Sony’s PS3 that sold 226,000. But the Sony console recorded its thirteenth consecutive month of sales growth. Nintendo didn’t fare so well with the Wii, which saw its worst sales figures since launch with 244,300 units shifted.
The news was celebrated by Xbox product director – Aaron Greenberg – who wrote on his Twitter account “The tortoise keeps going.” In the handheld market the DS had 342,700 units sold, while the PSP managed only 79,400.
On the software side of things EA’s Massen NFL 11 took the top spot in the sales charts with 920,800 for the Xbox 360 version, and 893,600 on the PS3 version came second. Third position went to Super Mario Galaxy with 124,600, and the Xbox 360 version of Mafia II got fourth with 121,600.
September promises to be another strong month for the Xbox 360 with the launch of Halo: Reach next week.
