Microsoft has been sharing details of the new SoC CPU/GPU Combo in the latest Xbox 360, which some nicknamed the slim – not that it is that slim. We have to point out that this is the first GPU and CPU combination to enter mass production, which also incorporates its memory and I/O logic – all of which is on one bit of silicon.

Jon Stokes from Ars Technica explains that the main reason why Microsoft went down this route was to cut down on costs, as it has a snowball effect on a number of hardware components – smaller motherboard and fewer heatsinks and fans.

Power consumption is always a factor on games consoles, and system-on-a-chip (SoC) helps the efficiency a great deal – something that the user will appreciate. However, the greatest benefit is the overall reduction in size of the Xbox 360.

So as you cans see, just by changing one part has led to a series of changes that has now made the games console much smaller than it was before, while still managing to maintain what makes the Xbox 360 so good in the first place. Although we have to say that this is the ultimate Xbox 360.
