Facebook and Mobile Technology: New Vonage App, Free Calls

By Posted 6 Aug 2010, 12:46

When you combine mobile technology and social media you can come up with a winning combination, especially with Facebook’s 500 million users and Vonage’s Mobile app that lets you call or IM your friends on Facebook for free anywhere in the world.

The app aims to improve the connection between mobile devices and social media, users can browse their Facebook friends list and make a call to them, which saves using those valuable minutes and saves on international roaming charges.

You can get the Vonage Mobile app for free on Android OS, iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone devices but need a 3G/4G connection or Wi-Fi. You both will need the app to connect, but will not need to know each others number thanks to being Facebook friends.

Skype has been going for some time, and this will raise the question of why Vonage’s app? In a word “Facebook” and the 500 million users, this is the only app that will let you call all of your Facebook friends for free. Do you know more people on Facebook than the contacts you have on Skype?

When a Facebook friend calls you will see their profile photo on your mobile device, and you will only need to log on the first time you use the app. Friends will be grouped by those you can call and those you can IM, but if a friend does not have the app yet and they are online, you can still chat with them. See the official video below for a quick demo of how the Vonage app works.
