Brian Blessed Facebook Sat Nav Campaign Wins Over TomTom

Bearded Brian Blessed, famous for his role as Prince Vultan of the Hawkmen in Flash Gordon has been named as the new voice of TomTom sat navs due to a Facebook campaign started in 2008. It is thought this is the first time a product has been created through the voices of social media.

Blessed joins the likes of John Cleese, Darth Vader and Homer Simpson who are also available voice addons for the popular TomTom sat navs.

The Facebook campaign was spearheaded by Richard Gardner from Manchester who set up a group called ‘Campaign to get Brian Blessed to do a voice-over for my sat nav.’

The group only reached 450 members by February 2010, and Gardner decided to campaign more support by contacting TomTom.

TomTom agreed to negotiate if the group could amass more that 25,000 fans, so Gardner took his group and contacted Brian Blessed directly who recorded a video appeal for the group.

As interest drummed up, the 25,000 mark was reached and it is now apparent that Brian Blessed voice will be available on TomTom sat navs from October.

TomTom UK vice president for sales and marketing said that “Voices are becoming an ever more popular personalisation tool for our sat navs and it’s been an interesting journey watching this particular campaign take shape.”

“It shows the power of social media, and if we can bring shouty happiness to over 25,000 people who are we to deny it?”

Brian Blessed reacted to the news in a video we have embedded below.

Can you think of any voices you would like to see released on the TomTom? Maybe you should start a campaign yourself!
