FaceTime Over 3G Data Usage: 3MB per minute

By Peter Chubb - Aug 4, 2010

Since JailbreakMe 2.0 was released a couple of days ago, those who have a jailbroken Apple iPhone 4 will be able to use FaceTime over 3G, which we discussed in a recent article. We have since learned of the data usage that it will use from your monthly allowance.

Engadget’s Vlad Savov learned via 9to5Mac that the data usage works out to be 3MB per minute; so making a 5-minute FaceTime call will use 14.7MB of data. This is not as bad as some had suggested, as some of the other services that we use over the net on our iPhones use much more than that.

Just remember though, try not to use FaceTime over 3G too much, otherwise you could get a nasty shock at the end of the month. This will not matter to those on an unlimited data plan, but not many of us are on that now.

There is another service that allows you to use FaceTime of 3G, and it only uses an estimated 1MB of data usage per minute. That service is called Fring, get more details on their official website.
