Online Trading: Cell Phone To 1975 Ford Bronco, and Porsche

By Gary Johnson - Jul 21, 2010

Most of us have sold items we no longer need on web sites like eBay and Craigslist, but I don’t think we would have been as successful as a 17 year old from California who has traded up from an old cell phone to own a Porsche using website Craigslist.

Rebecca Kimitch from Pasadenastarnews.com is reporting that Steven Ortiz first started his trading when a friend gave him an unwanted cell phone two years ago. He then traded that for a better one, which then got swapped for an iPod Touch. This got traded on for items like a MacBook Pro, until he eventually got left with a Toyota 4Runner.

At the time of this swap he was only 15 so couldn’t drive it so he traded it for an off road golf cart. After more trades were made he got a 1975 Ford Bronco, it was this vehicle that finally landed him with the Porsche Boxter S.

It took 14 separate swaps and two years for Steven to get his Porsche, and said “I get so many people who say, `Can you trade my phone for a car?’ I just say, `Yeah. It’s not that easy.”‘ He is now looking for another car as the Porsche is too expensive for him to run, and is planning to study business or law.

I'm doing the same thing with a twist. I'm starting with an iPhone and trying to pay off my debts.

I started a blog and twitter to document it all. I'll be letting readers help evaluate my trade offers and interact along the way.
