HTC Hero: Download Android 2.1 Update for GSM Model

By Alan Ng - Jun 29, 2010

We have some great news for HTC Hero owners now, as we can confirm that the update to Android 2.1 Eclair is finally to download to those of you with unlocked handsets.

As reported from Engadget, users with the GSM Hero will be getting notifications from HTC that the update to 2.1 is now available. The download is size is almost 80MB and works with no apparent problems, despite HTC previously warning that this update may harm some installed apps.

Thankfully though, that isnt the case as the update is also working fine on our unlocked device. As for those of you on Orange or T-Mobile, there doesn’t appear to be any signs of the update for you – hopefully now that the update is available for unlocked devices, you shouldn’t have to wait for too long.

Have you received the notification yet? Let us know your thoughts after installation!

I phoned HTC, and asked if there was anyway I could manually look for an update. They said that if I reset my phone then it would check for updates, if not, it automatically looks every two weeks. :)

I haven’t got any update. Infact, I got the update which is 1st part and not the 2nd part of the update 2.1.is there a way to download from computer or anyone else in UK facing the same. Iam on T mobile.

""I have got no notification and mine is sim-free. Why can't I just download the update and install via USB? I'm really getting annoyed with HTC and might just get an iPhone at this rate.""

    Have you updated ure rom?

  • I agree, it's not really any faster. But the camera app is a lot better now, so some actually nice photos! I still managed to get some amazing shots before anyway despite the reviews saying the camera was terrible (it really isn't!).
I'd actially say there are more glitches in 2.1 and none of the graphical ones I noticed have been ironed out, but all the Sense UI ones I'd noticed before have been rectified it seems.
Also I can't uninstall apps from the settings menu anymore, it just force closes EVERY TIME when I press manage applications. A real flaw, but oh well.
Nice to be keeping a bit more up-to-date in the Android world, opens up many new amazing apps and overall the phone feels new again.

I got my update last night. Went without a hitch and didn't even wipe my phone – all apps and settings were saved.

2.1 is quite nice. Some nice new touches, although I wouldn't say it was any faster or more responsive, which is a shame.
