Google Android 2.2: Will Your Smartphone Get FroYo?

By Posted 14 Jun 2010, 16:26

Coming off the back of some rather interesting news regarding Android 2.2 Froyo rumored to be getting a release very soon, we have done some digging to see which smartphones will actually be eligible for the update, and which ones will not.

If you are an Android user, and have been drooling over the prospect of installing Android 2.2 on your phone, better known as Froyo, then you might want to take a look at this list below, where we will tell you which phones will definitely be on the update list, which phones could receive the update, and which ones not expected to get Froyo.

Confirmed Froyo Phones: - The Google Nexus One is a certainty to receive the update. Although it had recently closed it’s online store, Google’s flagship phone has been used in a limited test group who received an early copy of the software. It has since been worked on for minor tweeks, and an OTA download is scheduled to be released any day now.

Three HTC devices – the Droid Incredible, the EVO 4G and the Desire are all scheduled to receive the update. The Incredible has already confirmed that the update will be available “sometime in the second half of this year,” with the Desire also set to follow suit. The EVO 4G, the hottest new property and seen as direct competition with the Apple iPhone 4 will also be getting the update.

Two other devices, the Motorola Droid which started the Android craze is set to be second in line after the Google Nexus One to receive the update, along with the MyTouch 3G and 3G Slide which are on track to see the update before the end of the year.

Unconfirmed Phones Not Expected To Get Froyo: - So far, there are only two phones not expected to receive the update. The T-Mobile G1 and the Samsung Behold II are said to be non-upgradable and far too limited in their hardware to gain full support of Froyo.

Phones That Could Receive The Update: - – Only four devices make up this list, but if you are an owner of either a Motorola Devour, a Motorola Backflip, a HTC Droid Eris and a HTC Hero then you can file this under “maybe”.

Other phones that we have failed to mention are the Motorola Cliq, Cliq XT and Samsung’s Moment Android device. With the Cliq, who were supposed to receive the 2.1 treatment before the end of the summer , might just get bumped up to 2.2 instead. As with the Samsung Moment, it has only just received the 2.1 update, so the future is uncertain when it comes to 2.2.
