Motorola Droid 2: Release Date and Android 2.2 Froyo Update

By Alan Ng - Jun 12, 2010

We have some exciting details for those of you planning to pick up the Motorola Droid 2 from Verizon this Summer, as it has been rumored that the device will ready for launch this August.

But there is more. BGR has heard from one of their trusted sources that the Droid 2 will be coming with Android 2.2 Froyo upon purchase. They also mention that the device will come equipped with a OMAP3630 processor.

This is just a rumor, but obviously its a pretty major one if it is true. We were fearing that the handset would come with Android 2.1 Eclair instead, so that will be a huge incentive for potential buyers if the news is true.

Maybe it is slightly disppointing that the handset won’t be arriving in July as speculated previously, but we don’t mind waiting an extra month if the handset is rocking Froyo!

What is the big deal about 2.2 froyo, what does it enable the Droid 2 to do tha the Droid can't do now? Also, can it be installed on the original Droid? (Thanks)

ahh well the droid will be able to do everything that the droid can do…once droid get froyo. it enables you to do more and there is rumored to be a great increse in speed from what i can tell the only diffrence between droid and droid 2 is the processeor (not sure how fast it is but its not a snapdragon so i dont know) and the display witch will probley have AROLED and the keyboard. really the droid 2 isnt anything special. its going to be about the droid shadow/xtream that is where the real beautiy is lol any questions send them my way

Your post reminds me what Verizon did for the storm and storm 2. No major differences, just worked out a few annoying kinks

hey kevin, nice comment but the droid 2, xtreme, and shadow r the same, this review is a little off, it should be coming up june 23, and its called the droid x, 1ghz processor, 8mp camera, and android 2.1, and an upgrade to froyo 2.2, in the near future, along with the original droid, so the only pros of the droid x are the keyboard, camera, and processor

alex, I think you may want to double check your sources – droid 2 and the droid extreme (aka shadow, x) are NOT the same. Droid 2 will have a slideout kb like the original & the extreme will not. Droid 2 will also be released before the extreme. If you’re gonna call someone out, at least get your facts straight first.
