iPhone 4 Retina Display: Drains 30% more Battery Life?

We have some interesting details about Apple’s new Retina Display now, as Samsung has claimed that OLED technology is better and that Apple’s IPS technology still has a lot of catching up to do.

As reported from Engadget, a representative from Samsung has recently spoken in the Korean media, adding that the new display screen featured on the iPhone 4 would only offer a 3 to 5 percent advantage in sharpness over an AMOLED screen.

Furthermore, Samsung thinks that Apple’s new screen could drain battery life by 30% more and ultimately concedes that their AMOLED screens offer better viewing angles and contrast.

Here is a quote from the Korean Herald: “Structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AMOLED display technology.”

While Jobs thinks that IPS LED technology is superior to OLED, Samsung obviously think different. Let us know your thoughts on this. Is battery life a worry for you?

    What a stupid article. Of course a competitor would tout their own product. Even with that, he still admits the IPS screen is better. And regardless if it does consume more power, it still has a longer battery life then the previous generation.
    You would think PR stands for Public Relations (for Samsung) rather than product reviews. What a lousy article.

    What Eytan said. Both technologies have good points. At this stage in their development, AMOLED has a lower power draw, which is a good thing. IPS is better in bright ambient light, and has a significantly better viewing angle. With the improved battery life in the new iPhone, the higher efficiency of the AMOLED is not such a big issue in real world usage, while the superior viewing provided by the IPS actually is significant.
    But with the next generation of these displays, or of the phones using them, this could all change. It's a bit early to be declaring an overall winner.
