City Cars: Smart Fortwo, make a statement around town

The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive City Car has been getting some mixed reactions while Katherine Tweed from GreenTech Media took one of these cars out for a test drive. Some motorists asked how much she paid for the vehicle and even gave it a thumbs up, while others just laughed

This is something that small electric vehicles will have to put up with at the moment – but remember that this was the case with the Hybrid when they first launched.

Smart USA will launch 250 Smart Fortwo electric vehicles in October in the U.S., but will be entering a tough market – one that could be dominated by the upcoming Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf, which we have discussed on a number of occasions. However, let us not forget that Smart caters for a niche market.

The car only has a small powerplant, producing just 30 kW of power from its electric motor. The vehicle is still nippy though, offering a 0 to 40mph time of 6.5 seconds. The downside to the car is its range – just 82 miles on a full charge. This should not be a worry as more and more charging stations are appearing in a number of locations across the U.S.
