Sony have now taken the wraps of its of two new cameras, the NEX-3 and the NEX-5, which we first learned of back in February. The new form of camera is different as it offers an interchangeable lens; this helps the compact camera produce D-SLR-quality images from a point-and-shoot camera.
PC Mag managed to spend an hour with the two new cameras; PJ Jacobowitz thought that this was the perfect opportunity to offer a mini-review. He did not have enough time to fully appreciate the image quality, but he seemed very impressed with what he saw.
Both the Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 are very similar, the major difference being with its video recording capabilities – the extra cost is just $100 for the higher model. Sony has a huge hill to climb to catch-up to Panasonic and Olympus, as they have offered interchangeable lenses for some time now – called their “Micro Four Thirds.”
However, Sony has the chance to overtake the both of them as the sensor is larger and offers better image quality. The NEX-3 is 1.38-inches thick while the NEX-5 is 1.56-inches thick. The screen on both cameras are 3-inchs, they offer 921,600 dots, more resolution than a Micro Four Thirds camera.
The prices for each camera are as follows: Sony NEX-3 with 16mm F2.8 Lens: $549.99, Sony NEX-3 with 18-55mm F3.5-5.6: $599.99, Sony NEX-5 with 16mm F2.8 Lens: $649.99 and the Sony NEX-5 with 18-55mm F3.5-5.6: $699.99.
