Halo 2: Xbox Live Multiplayer No More – Your Thoughts

By Updated on

Today will see Microsoft finally pull the plug on online multiplayer gaming for Halo 2 via Xbox Live, Bungie have taken this opportunity to show their gamers gratitude for staying loyal to the game for so long.

When gamers search for games they will see this message; “Thanks for playing. Seriously? More than five years after launch? You’re awesome.”

In fact it is closer to 5 years and 6 months since the release of Halo 2, the game first hit the shelves on November 9th 2004 and according to MSNBC in the game’s first day it reached $125 million in sales.

As of March 29th 2010 Halo 2 had the most unique users playing on Xbox Live (in terms of Xbox Originals), other originals still being played online included Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Splinter Cell Chaos, Fable and Counter-Strike.

Now that you can no longer play Halo 2 online we thought we would see what our readers thought. Do you think that 5 years Xbox Live support was sufficient? Do you feel Halo 2′s online experience is better than Modern Warfare 2? What game will you play online now instead?

Sad to see it go…. its a piece of iconic history, is there a museum that would consider having it on display? a display on pop culture *needs* to have it :-D

The limited time-frame of support for online games on consoles should perhaps serve as a message to console makers to open up their services a little more, and allow for users to create their own servers like you would on PC games. The fact remains somebody has paid for this game and suddenly, they're only getting so much out of the product which they paid their hard owned money for. Hardcore fans of the game on XBOX might not see 5 years as enough, and only having the choice to continue playing online by getting the game for the PC seems unfair.

Perhaps developers should reconsider the platforms they release on if they don't intend to continue support for games for more than 6 years. These games have a long lifespan for their users. The guys running the servers ought to have the same attitude.

There are ways to still play Halo 2 and other Xbox games ONLINE, just not though LIVE!!!
I've never done it myself, but it has to do with setting up a network on your PC for your Xbox to link to and others to do the same thing.

I played halo 2 everyday!! I never knew it was supposed to go offline on the 15th!! I just finished trying to play halo 2 online and it wouldn't let me! and if i knew it was going offline i would of played it all day! and it is way better than MW2.. and i think it is better than halo 3… I play team snipers, and sometimes team slayer… Im going to get halo reach, and i hope its as good as halo 2!! I think they should of left it online a little longer…. at least till halo reach came out! :(

that's terrible… i'm not sure what details were involved but wasn't h2 one of the biggest online shooters ever? what about the poor suckers that had a kid and had to take a break? i can't come back after 2 years and play? i just bought a used xbox and game so i could play. just to find out they dropped it last month? c'mon diablo2 is still up and running… how much could it cost to keep H2 going. sorry h3 sucked by comparison. and if i only have a year or two to play that… why bother?

Wow what a fantastic game and it is heartbreaking to see it go. I just found out about this but and I haven’t played the games in so long. But I remember going over to my friends house when he had an xbox original and playing this baby for hours on end. It was truely the game of it’s time and will be considered one of the greatest multiplayer games of all time (taking into consideration what time period it was made in). This game cannot be matched by many other xbox live games because of how revolutionary and how fun the game was. Always been a classic and it should have never left us :)
