HP Slate vs Apple iPad: Confirmed Tablet Specs and Prices Compared

By Updated on

It is no secret to say that some of our readers were pretty unimpressed by the Apple iPad unveiling, therefore there seems to be a niche in the market for a tablet PC which rectifies some of the frequent complaints about the iPad’s specifications and features.

Recently specifications for the upcoming HP Slate have shown up on SlashGear, I must say that with better all around hardware and a more functional OS it could prove to be a very popular iPad alternative.

All of the performance hardware within the Slate seems to swamp the iPad’s hardware, the Slate features an Intel Atom Menlow Z530 (1.6GHz) processor. 1GB of DDR2 memory and a range of different flash storage capacities starting at 32GB.

The iPad’s processor is a 1GHz Apple A4 chip, it features an undisclosed amount of memory and flash storage starts at 16GB, in its favor however is 802.11n WiFi connectivity, a resolution of 1024 x 768, longer battery life and a lower starting price ($499.99).

If you check out SlashGear’s article you can see complete details regarding the HP Slate’s specifications and pricing, along with a very useful image comparing the two tablets.

I don't understand the point of this article. The iPad is not intended to be a slate computer that attempts to run a "mouse and keyboard" OS on a device without a mouse or keyboard. It's a device designed to use an OS based on a finger multi-touch screen not a bastardized version of a desktop OS.

It's not a replacement for your notebook computer, it's an entirly new beast. Your complaints are similiar to the guy that bought a road racing bicycle and complained that it didn't work well on the moutain bike trails in his backyard. Wrong tool for the wrong job.

Fair point, I suppose it all depends what you want from a tablet.

Is a 1.6 HGz processor going to be sufficient to run Windows 7 quick enough? We’ll have to see. You say the Slate hardware “seems to swamp” the iPad but you might be eating those words when we actually see the performance of it. Apple has routinely relied on less than top performance hardware but achieved spectucular results because they design the operating system to optimize it.

There’s no comparison here. Yeah the ipad is a new beast. But for what? Honestly I hate how money hungry apple is. Sure it might be completely different but this late in the game for electronics and your not including a usb or even an SD card slot for that matter your absolutely restarted. So you’ve got this awesome device that WILL run out of memory. then what?… sorry not for me. Ill go with the slate over the prettiness of the iPad.
