Vegetable Protein Recall: Salmonella Risk

A number of food products have to be recalled, it is thought that they could be contaminated with salmonella. This recall affects the vegetable protein HVP and a flavor enhancer; the FDA made the announcement.

For those who do not know, HVP is a relative of MSG and is used to enhance the flavor of a number of processed food, these include popular things such as chili, dips, hot dogs, salad dressings, soups and much more. The contamination risk was spotted over two weeks ago in HVP, which is produced by Basic Food Flavors Inc.

It has taken from then until now for the FDA to investigate and confirm that there was salmonella contamination at the plant. All HVP produced by Basic Food Flavors in 2009 is subject to this recall.

If you have contaminated food this could be a potential killer, food that has to be heated up is not subject to a recall, as heating up the food will kill the any salmonella bacteria.
