Xbox 360 vs. PS3: Years left?

There’s no way either company will deliver a new console in the next two years I’d say. both companies have lost a fair amount on hardware. Sony because they still lose out on every PS3 sold (though that is dropping). Microsoft because of the crappy hardware have lost shedfulls on the RROD and other issues.

I reckon 1012/13 before we see any new hardware. I’m not sure how much more performance can be squeezed out of the 360, but I reckon the PS3 hasn’t been fully utilised yet, neither will it for a year or maybe two. Just ask the dev crew at Naughty Dog.

BTW if you have a PS3 and haven’t played Uncharted 2 yet, get off the fence!!

1Yr left the Xbox (and Wii), 5 years for the PS3. It’s clear to anyone that the Xbox360 topped out about 2 years ago, as games have not gotten graphically any better since then (despite what the fanboys suggest).

PS3 is getting better every month, with Killzone2 raising the bar, Uncharted2 raising it further, and God Of War3 and GT5 set to raise it higher still.

itll probably be 1 maybe 2 years before the xbox360s replacement. but the xbox360 will still carry on way past then. im suspicous about the 39million figure.lol. more like 37million. and why such an old sales figure for the ps3? nice of them to ignore the recent sales surge. current figures are close to 31.5million sales. the ps2 and even ps1 are still selling so a good decade left in the ps3. but it will most likely peak performancewise in 2 or 3 years and be replaced within the next 5 years.

the ps3 is by far a better system. the xbox 360 doesnt have all the games the ps3 does. I mean the xbox 360 has halo but thats about it. the ps3 is slimmer plays blu-ray disks and dvds as for the xbox only dvds. the ps3 also has a better controller, it has sixaxis controller and i’m not talking about the original sixaxis i’m talking about the dualshock 3. the xbox 360 has a heavy not as easy to handle non vibrating non motion sensible controller that takes 6 hours to charge, but it lasts 3 days. the ps3 controller takes 30 minutes to charge and last 2 days. and to all those stupid people err i mean xbox 360 lovers who thinks the xbox 360 has better graphics, your wrong 1. is it has better graphics because of the software 2. it has better graphics because all the game disks for the ps3 are blu-ray not dvd like the xbox 360. so there you go ps3 wins by far!

I agree with Waldo, the Xbox 360 has been pushed to it’s limits according to the companies that have made gears of war and a couple others. Let’s say if Halo: Reach doesn’t have any graphical improvements over the last few Halo games, then the Xbox has reached its limits but for the PS3 fans out there, there seems to be more in the future for you since the processor(power) hasn’t been fully used.. .unless Microsoft has something up their sleeves that spontaneously overclocks the power of their console.

Space will be the issue, man, how many DVDs can you fit in a 360 game case? Without switching to high density media, Blu-ray for example, the 360 will top out in practical terms very shortly. Changing discs is so 1990.

Can’t see the arrival of the next-gen from MSoft anytime soon, for the same reason, will they ever pay royalties to Sony for using their tech? No. Will anyone challenge blu-ray? No.

The Natal will prolong the life of the 360 by providing lower-fi casual gaming, but this won’t do anything for the hardcore FPS fan, which is the Xbox fanbase.

Sony has the legs, this gen is a marathon, not a sprint. Ask Nintendo.

I’d agree with some comments post here, however it would be interesting to see if Natal produces any more life from the Xbox and how well Sony’s Gem and the 3D adaption take off coupled with potetially a Onlive rival might have.
IMO PS3 will push the 360 aside in terms of sale this doesn’t mean the 360 doesn’t have something to bring to the table , theres some good games and services available which I enjoy before returning to Playstation Brand.
A point that I’d like to share is. over life span , the PS3 is outselling the 360 and will IMO have a shorter life span, also how many 360 owner bought a 360 and now own a ps3 as a full replacement or dominant household console (not including people who use both equally) just IMO I’ve seen alot of friends who had the 360 and jumped ship because the 360 was a bridging console between the PS2/xbox to the PS3 due to delays in the PS3 arriving on the shelves or the original high price.
These friends now have either sold the 360 or its been passed on to other family members, although theres the other side that I see a strong affection for the 360 for some of the core gamers.

Hello all, to be honest, I can only see over the site PS3 fans. Which lead to a non-sense of real comparison between 2 console. I have both console. And to be honest, both console offer the same visual quality, even with blu-ray tech. It might be an advantage in the future, but for now beeing, blu-ray games have not delivered anything superior to my self. In fact, even in when games are develop for both system, usually, it offers more quality on the Xbox 360 1080p vs 720p. Anyhow, guys both system offers different exclusive games, which make them attractive in their own way. No mather what u challenge over here, sony and microsoft will make $$$ out of us. lol…And in the future to challenge the people who are saying that nothing will challenge blu-ray: it’s so easy to see that SD and SSD memory will soon be challenging the blu-ray tech. it’s more convenient, faster etc…. Anyhow, tech are meant to be challenge and it’s better for all of us Gamers… It is and will always be better to have some competitors in the loop for games to improve.

so what that makes you a ps3 fanboy yes? and i personally think they both could last awhile maybe a half decade max depending on various improvements in graphic technology and software they develop what really matters is playability if sales are just ridiculously high for a majority of the games they sell well then they might just hold off on making a new console or, they may use this opportunity as more time to develop a new console whatever happens both of them have very nice exclusive titles either way i can a few more years of my 360.. i mean hell, i still play nintendo64 now and then

360 controller vibrates…on top of that you can charge and play..no biggie there. most people prefer a weighted controller and theres plenty more games than halo…on top of that you can rent movies off netflix so screw bluray.. facebook twitter game demos do i go on? customizable dashboard avatar etc… keep going? ok.. a mini bio of you, gamer picture preset info to help you group with the people you want in online games and much more so all you people cant quit talking so much smack bout the 360.. i prefer 360 you prefer ps3 im not dissing ps3 so quit dissing 360 because they both have their own unique features, beyond that? is preference

well I wasnt to sure about the vibrating thing but the ps3 does all that you just said and more even the wii is starting to do the movie thing with netflix sooo yeah but there is some games that I wish were on the ps3 like halo but its not a must have like prototype or infamous but those are just fun games. but the controllers on the ps3 are heavy duty ive dropped them like 4-6 times on hard floor not carpet and theres not a scratch on them I was really surprised when I saw that I checked them top to bottom time after time and no scratches! and I prefer the light controllers.

… I can go on and on… bottom line is we have more exclusives… meaning more games to choose from and more choices increases chances of finding a game you love… even if the critics and masses don’t like it. For me that game was ShadowRun, Prey and some Rare games.. and I’m just barely exploring all the exclusives we have. Also… Xbox 360 exclusives sell more when compared to PS3 exclusives… that easily tells us that more Xbox 360 gamers enjoy their exclcusives more, so chances are people in general will enjoy them as well and less dissappointments to be had like the PS3 gamers are obviously having.

Xbox Live
- The ability to make your own games (be a game developer with the Indies feature) and sell them on Xbox live
- Connection download speed on DLC/Demos… and MP connection
- Way more demos… good bye gamefly <— this feature canceling out gamefly pretty much paid for my Xbox live
- Cross game chat
- Dashboard looks prettier
- More people own it.. so it reassured me of chances for online communities in MP games
- Patches come sooner in comparison to it's online rival
- Downloadabele games… are superior and has waaaay more titles availble via Arcade and Indies

Controller
- Trigger buttons are shaped like triggers unlike it's rivals controller… oh and they don't slip either like its rivals controller
- It's big making it fit comfortablly on your hands where incontrast, it's rivals controller is smaller putting gap between a gamers hand and the controller which feels a bit uncomfortable.
- Has a bit of controller "meat" under the trigger buttons which protects the buttons from being pressed on accidentally if you were to set it on a surface, unlike it's rivals controllers.
- The left analog stick isn't defective and gets stuck like it's rival controller
- The wireless controller is extremely effective(more so then it's rivals) and works from rooms where your Xbox 360 isn't present!

Cheaper games
- Prices for retail games go down faster in the stores against it's rival…
- Arcade games are offered at 5-20 dollars
- Indie games are offered at 1-5 dollars

It's American
- I'm American and I want to support my country's economy (salutes flag)

Microsoft has shown me that they know how to sell and market their products…

- Easy console to develop games on… which has made it most developer's choice to make games on… which makes multi-platform games superior in graphics for Xbox 360
- New guy to the console industry and already making Sony and it's PS fight desperately it seems (price cut after price cut, sku after sku, ungrading instead of upgrading [losing Backwards Compatibility and other bells and whistles])… which was formally the king in last gen
- Project Natal
- Has made Xbox live attractive enough to pay for thus they make money off subscribers… while it's competitors give it away.
- They sell games both on PC and Xbox 360… sharing console exclusives sometimes… thus increasing profit with Window live subscribers and taking advantage of PS3 users that say "I'm not missing anything… I'm buying it on PC" and PC gamers. Also PS3 gamers buying them on PC only proofs that PS3 does NOT satisfy you with it's exclusives… then again we can just look at the sales on PS3 exclusives and know this.

Are you serious, it is easy to see that the xbox is getting better textures on most games that come out on both consoles, i have both a ps3 and a xbox 360 and the xbox is by far better then the ps3. I think you are the fanboy for saying 5 years left in the ps3.

Now I am speaking as someone who has all three major consoles and have 20 other consoles dating to the Atari 2600. I am gamer, who also happens to be a programmer. First off the comments about XBOX 360 not having any game is purely a dumb comment based on the limmited facts in Graysons head. In fact I could sit apart and rip most comments made by the PS3 Fanboys. You guy's make me regret owning a playstation. The reason XBOX 360 has more games and why Games on this console usually come out ahead of PS3 is the fact that the programming from PC to Xbox is almost identical. The hardware PS3 gets the Edge mainly because of the blueray player. In fact I purchased the machine as a blueray player and am looking forward to God of War.

Bottom line MS has much better online action and XBOX live has been around since the first XBOX it is worth every penny of $50.00 a year. Which is another PS3 fanyboy idiotic comment I always hear. That PS3 is free… All the thousands we spend on systems and games you guys really go on about 50 bucks! MS own the online console Universe and only gets better I can download any type of media I want I can rent movies, buy movies, rent and or buy or demo games, PS3 is ok online but the technology isn't even on the same level when it comes to online play. Ok I am going back to watching a blueray movie on my PS3 after I finish playing Mass Effect 2 which is a fantastic game! Watch out for Project Natal will add several more years to the 360 as it will set the bar and take over the lead in motion sensing technology, watching this at E3 was amazing, I can't wait till December 2010 it will be fun.

Both are good consoles with much life left. Decision should surely be based on what games you want to play/ other utilities you want out of a console.

Although, i would reccomend anyone expecting natal to be anything greater than a junked up eyetoy will be disappointed. I cant imagine that type of motion tech it uses having an application that would attract proper gamers. – I know thats a pretty out there suggestion and I really hope i'm wrong.
The Gem/Arc/Wandy thing that PS3 is set to offer will be more precise but anyone using it will probably feel like a total tool.

So in conclusion its swings and roundabouts.- Different but both fun.

If anyone is looking at this and hasn’t purchased yet then i’d personally reccomend PS3 for a much better all-round experience. And no sudden console deaths. Again there are those that disagree but i dont want to put money into the hands of a company who continue to produce a product that they know will probably die inside of a year.

Dont under-estimate looks either. The xbox 360 looks miserable and ugly where as ps3 is pretty stylish, especially the slim.

I really doubt motion sensing will ever catch on. Wii was ok for a little while now everyone's bored of it. Nothing will ever beat holding a controller in your hands. Natal will keep 360 alive but that's all, it's just a life raft. PS3's potential hasn't been reached yet IMO.

360:
Still has the juice to keep on truckin'. Franchises like Halo, Fable, Forza, and Gears all contribute to what is quite an impressive gaming console.
Xbox LIVE may cost $75AUD, but for that much, I get 365 days of online gaming, videos and movies, Arcade, Demo and Full game downloads for only an extra $5-$10.

This problem isn't as bad as it seems, because the RROD is fixable with the right tools and procedures. (a freezer and towel or a heat gun won't work lol)

PS3
I honestly think that the PS3 is a joke.
The PS2 was pretty good, but the inclusion of Blu-fail- oh hang on, wrong page. *ahem* Blu-ray does nothing to me, or many other people. I've seen both consoles in action, and the graphics aren't any different. If you think that the 360 has been pushed to its limits, look at upcoming games and see for yourself.
There are some ok games, like the popular LittleBigPlanet, or Killzone 2 etc. etc., but the 360 can deliver similar things, (LBP = Halo 3 Forge, KZ2 = Halo 3/GoW2).
And we all have computers, correct? Now, who has a laptop, or desktop computer in the same room as their console? Always? Sometimes? Yes? Then why does the PS3 need an internet browser? What is the good of using a sticky thumbstick to navigate a web page that can be much better navigated on a PC?
Oh, and the reason that the PSN has more subscribers, is because fanboys can just create account, after account, after account. A123, B234, C345, etc. as usernames, and just say, well, there are 2,893 accounts to beef up the numbers a bit. <-FAIL
Oh, and what happened to all of your exclusives? FF13? Haze? -> 360 too!
And Halo? Gears? Fable? Nope, not for you, sorry.

I must say, the PS3 delivers a whole bunch… a whole bunch of nothing. Where did PS2 backward compatibility go?

Every system has targetted audience. I do not own Ps3 or 360 since have not made my mind n which to spn de $$ on; and refuse to let my ps2 die (. How ever have played on both systems. It all comes to preferences -BOTH ARE great consoles. Personaly not an online gamer, don't care much about chatting, just play a good game and good graphics, so all comes down to… Titles. Big fan of God of War, Killzone, Devil May Cry to mention some… For me, PS3 That being said the best console is the one that works for you and satisfy your gaming needs. I don't think MS is releasing another console ats neither Sony so at least 5 yrs or so for both

i honestly dont see why blu ray is a big deal when soon you will be able to download all the games anyway. and because the 360 has better procesers and other software then the ps3 theoretically developers could make games that are more advanced on the 360 then the ps3. for example the most important thing on a pc is the RAM proceser ect. when hardrive wont really limit what you can do with said pc. so basically the 360 could have potential for another 5 years with the ps3 or even surpassing it.

One game GT 5. Biggest franchise in history. Halo's got nothin on it. Xbox 360 has mabye 5 excluives coming out this year 3 of which suck (pc ports do not count). What is it 60 dollars for there online and another 60 for wifi then the 299 (420 dollars total ps3 has all that for 299) dollar console without blueray and a webbrowser. Come on there is no doubt ps3 is gunna take this race. Ever since the slim price drop has taken effect ps3 has been selling more and will continue to sell more.

Who cares about the console. Its all about the games. Xbox 360 is way better if you are into first person shooters. And like hanging out with a comunity of imature idi0ts online. (ps has some too, but not anywhere near as many)

If you are into rpg games, then ps3 is slightly better. I mean 360 has some very great rpg's, such as fable, but ps3 has all these ff games (not including ff13), valkraie, etc.

so ps3 has its advantages, but overall, 360 is slightly better.
But this, is of course, just an opinion. And it depends on your tastes in games really.

PS3 Pros:
God of War (1, 2, and 3), Little Big Planet, Modnation Racers (on the way), Uncharted 1 & 2, Gran Turismo 5 (not here yet), Demons Souls, Infamous, Heavenly Sword, and the Blu-ray player tip the scales for me. PS3 is much quieter. The online is good enough (360 is better though), making total cost of ownership cheaper. Hardware failures are less common than with the 360.

360 Pros:
Online for 360 is way better (e.g., chat) and more populated with gamers. Discounted game sale prices seem more frequent on the 360. There are definitely more games for 360 (but more exclusives I'd rather play on PS3). Multi-ported console game graphics are usually better on the 360, but not nearly as much as they used to be.

But I still prefer the PS3.

well if you look on the games for the ps3 like the co-op can bow down to the xbox. The xbox has tons of co-op games that are fun and amazing on the xbox and ps3 has some amount of co-op games but the xbox has awesome titles like L4D and its sequel and i could go on and on but the ps3 fan boys thinks the xbox relies on Halo for their money investment well thats not true and ps3 relies on Ratchet and Clank,Infamous,Uncharted, Xbox has Gears of war 1&2 and 3 will be coming soon sometime, Lost planet 2,Mass effect 1&2,Forza,Project Natal(looks badass),Dead Rising 1&2 and i could still go on and on and on that to lol but seriously XBOX RAPES PS3!!!

I own all three. I have to say that I play the 360 the most, but I do not think its the best. I only play 360 more because I have more friends on the 360. But two of my friends like mike and Jas both sold their 360 and got the ps3. They used to bash on the PS3 and hate it. Now….they bash on me becuase i still play ps3. I love the ps3. it has way better graphics and i know because i play mw2 at the same time because i have two 37" HDTV. I bought one my dad bought the other. But I have to say everygame that i play that is on both consoles the ps3 surpasses the 360 not always a lot but somethimes there is a huge difference. Like Red Dead. Looks really good on the PS3. It looks alright on the 360. There are alot more little kids on the 360 then there are on the PS3. It makes it really annoying. I understand why people pay for live because it does have a better online. But I usually still have more fun on the PS3. But i like both.

you have no idea wat you're talking about… i have 4 friends that own both ps3 andxbox 360, and they all say when it comes to game play (gimics aside)..xbox 360 craps on ps3. I have an elite as well, and online game play is a joke on ps3 compared to sony's. xbox is a less quality console, but for the price you're paying for ps3, xbox is the way to go.
And for the microsoft kinect (project natal), the introduction of this will cause xbox sales to sky rocket. Face it, MICROSOFT IS A BIGGER company than SONY and therefore sony will be left in the dust within the next 5-6 years.

just get both so you can have the best of both worlds? xbox has its online inactivity perks, and ps3 has its blu-ray and there very inactive games. you got halo on one side and final fantasy on the other. or metal gear solid for everyone as the new one is coming out for xbox 2.

That is complete bullshit. Xbox 360's have an Xeno's GPU which is superior to the RSX GPU that the PS3 has.

and how are you going about comparing the jasper with the slim? Its just a different chip making in run cooler, and i guess quieter. but the failure rate if u have a jasper will go from 35% to 7%. (3 yr warranty styll)

The Xbox is basic as hell and requires a subsription to LIVE for most of it to even work.. So much for a Next-Gen console lol, My 2 year old N96 phone does more Online and media related stuff…

PS3 has 90% of the same games as 360 along with its own exclusives and even most of 360 ones are jumping now to PS… Even getting better DLC these days on PSN and its much cheaper than LIVE or free quite alot.

PSN costs nothing for online play or voice or video chat, Even the music video player or netflix or BBc iplayer works without even signing into PSN… Without Gold on LIVE you can use none of the stuff the Xbox can do like Now.fm or Sky TV player or Netflix.. Even if u pay for Netflix or Sky anyways.

Even the dasboard on the 360 looks like its designed only for kids and is full of marketing sales BS always trying to sell you something with ads or spam… Or when not on LIVE being full of back rubbing simple ads for the perks of LIVE.

The XMB does fine and you can change anything on it from all the icons to backgrounds and more, Also all the internet related stuff is kept in 1 place so as to not fill the screen with adverts crap like some popup full website i.e. LIVE…

With a PS3 u just buy the console and go from there, Offline-online-Multiplayer-web radio/Tv-Youtube, All free after the inital cost. With the 360 u buy the console, Then have to pay $60 a year for most of it to work, Up from $50 last year and $250 since launch for Gold lol even if u only use it rarely, Then pay again when the thing finally breaks down…

Which is even more of a worry now that the new Slim 360 is having loads of problems and now only comes with a 1 year Warranty instead of the 3 year rrod one…

I own both and have played more 360 than PS recently tho its still obvious that the PS3 is the better bit of kit by miles. Without LIVE a 360 is a basic piece of hardware that can only do few things… Not even Windows Media centre works without LIVE…

The PS is technology/hardware based and works out the box like a Tv or any other electronic device all without even needing to go online ever…

Xbox is based around the LIVE online service and forces you down the path to the Microsoft Marketplace to start spamming u with ads and taking micro payments from u and your kids…

The Xbox is nothing without LIVE while a PS3 still does everything, Even without paying… Or even going online for most things…

Unlike the crap box(which I own because of the exclusive mass effect series that is now coming to playstation) the ps3 has wireless built in and doesn't cost 100 bucks for an adaptor. ps 3 is lacking in accessories because it doesn't need gimics to sell its games. It is also only 3 million units back with one less year than microsoft. I like a few of the mircosoft titles but none of them are exclusive for long anyway(other than halo) and I can get them on my PC..
In the long run ps3 will be around longer than xbox360. The very reason is the blu ray which you think is about viewing movies. Its about media storage. FFXIII was a bomb because they had to take out content to squeeze it onto dvd discs for the xbox. The only games that will be limited is ones that are cross platform. My dads playstation has some games that look a lot better than my xbox. (My PC kills both but that is another matter).
I am playing disgaea on my ps2 right now because the xbox doesn't care about gamers that don't fall into either FPS or Sports people.Look at what they did to mass effect 2. I like RPGs and adventure games and I can only find them on the Japanese consoles. So xbox loses another customer. If I wanted to play a FPS shooter i will play that..gears of war is awesome, why change an rpg into a crappy gears ripoff?
Anyway big games will eventually stop the use of xbox 360 once the new models come out same as xbox…ps2 still has a few gems that roll out and its 4 years out from when it was replaced.
Hell the wii is a POS and sold almost as much as the other 2 systems combined and that tech is already 10 years out of date. But they are exclusives to that system and you aren't expecting top end graphics. Which is why there is a pinch on the XBOX- not orientated toward families and hardware is a little behind the PS3. Though the kinecs may help them prolong the life of it, much like the annoying Mii I mean Avatar they now have for their dashboard.

Those exclusive are available on my PC why buy something I can get a better version of on my computer.They are also forcing the dumbing down of games for cross platforming to Xbox(I know I have one!)

The graphics on crossplatfrom games are close, ps3 now has better graphics on ps3 games since the programmers have figured out how to use the 7 cell crap. I like the PS3 more than the xbox(course I have smaller hands) the game selection is close for quality games. Most are cross platform and despite the year extra xbox doesn't have a whole lot of exceptionally better games. Not to mention they both have a lot of clunker(I have bought so many crap games for my xbox based on titles-shadowrun comes to mind as does chromehounds.

I played it and thought-meh thats it? Lucky I only borrowed my buddies and went back to playing halo 3…which is good because now it has the more casual gamers than reach. You can manage to get through a game and not get destroyed with a 25-1 death ratio.

No they aren't. The only reason I bought Xbox was because of Mass Effect and Gears of War(halo is cool too) but they are now available on the PS3 and PC….Now that I am on my forth Xbox I regret that purchase.

The tech in the cells is as good perhaps better than the xbox. they have reached their max capacity already in terms of media. Any RPG that runs on the Xbox is a dog because of disc space. Which is a hardware issue.

Being a 360 owner who had 2 360's collaspe on me. I spent a lot of money with Xbox, and when came time to buy a 3rd 360 or switch. I was ready to switch, but before i did, I looked at the game market… and just nothing stood out for me. then when playstation lost backwards compatiblity, I thought, man.. this sux. Why am I buying this ps3… for blu-ray?

Long story short. Xbox sux much… i hate microsoft, but PS3 is boring… its preferance… and software and SUPPORT… hands down. more money overall price with xbox (live & additional boxes + separate blu ray) but More fun. and MORE online support. That is what sells.
