Verizon 2010 iPhone and Apple Price Negotiation Update

Verizon 2010 iPhone and Apple Price Negotiation Update

By: Peter Chubb | January 9, 2010 | 86 Comments

The hopes of a Verizon iPhone in 2010 will not go away, we reported in a recent post that Apple had fallen out with the network carrier, as they could not agree on a price. However, as this was just a rumor and not official we have to take it for what it is worth.

According to sindhtoday.net, a recent report from Apple Insider has reported that Apple and Verizon are still in negotiations with each other in the hope of launching a CDMA iPhone this summer. Both companies are reportedly finalizing pricing details, which we recently learned that Verizon were asking too much.

We know that AT&T’s exclusivity with the iPhone ends this summer, one minute we hear that Apple will extend the deal, the next they are to allow other carriers to offer the iPhone to its customers. It seems that we will just have to wait, maybe Apple will announce more at their event on January 27.

We have to wonder if we will ever see Apple move away from AT&T, the two companies have worked well together over the years, although it is no secret that AT&T need to improve on their network. Most iPhone customers have said that they would move over to Verizon if the iPhone became available to them.

If Verizon were to get the iPhone in the summer, will it be any different to the AT&T version?

“We know that AT&T’s exclusivity with the iPhone ends this summer” – oh really? That is just “analyst” speculation as is your entire blog. The same speculation we have gotten ever year since the iPhone was introduced. I guess one day you will be right, you know, when everyone including Verizon is using LTE service for voice and data and CDMA is long forgotten. It would be mighty unusual for Apple to make a device that used an old and dying technology like CDMA. Even Verizon knows that CDMA is dead and will abandon it in a few years. Apple making a CDMA device would be like bringing back the Newton or maybe they should put an 8088 processor in the new Macs.

  • LOL

    Remo…..as in Remo Williams???

  • Jay

Well Remo the AT&T employee, you underestimate how much AT&T customers hate their service. Given that download speeds are similar to a 14.4 modem and call quality is horrible (when you’re actually able to stay connected!), people have no problem going to Verizon with old technology that they’ll have to change out in a couple years.

  • http://vzwiphone ted

“cdma abandoned”? Not for a long while my friend REMO. You’ll be seeing it for another 10-15 years….just like in North America, China, Japan, South korea, Etc.

I am one of those AT&T haters. I bought an iPhone but gave it away and switched back to Verizon. The only good thing about AT&T’s random drop feature is that they don’t charge extra for it! Talking with customer service is equally disappointing. I’d really like to have an iPhone again but it’s just not worth the poor AT&T service.

  • Thomas

But, AT&T got the iPhone summer 2007, and most likely signed 4 year agreement (there usually isn’t 3 years, is there? and if it were 2 years, there exclusive with the iPhone would’ve ended last year.) so wouldn’t this mean that AT&T contract wouldn’t end with apple until summer 2011? And not this year??

    Fox News – lol
People just want the Iphone to go to Verizon because they want the iphone. I would hate the company that had the phone I wanted as well. Why is an Iphone used in all of Verizons anti-at&t commercials. I like at&t personally I never had a problem with them and I had Verizon and Sprint as well. Reality all phone companies have pros and cons. The only reason that AT&T is superior is because we have the IPHONE hahahahaha and the Droid good phone but not an Iphone.

  • Cody_Kirk92

I Think itd be cool to have the iphone available for Verizon

  • BB497

Hey Remo, cdma is the best cell phone quality technology for making voice calls, a lot less static and interference then gsm. Of course you must know this since you work for and have an at&t phone, and that’s why you hate cdma. Apple has been making a cdma i-phone in Korea for years. There have been cdma / gsm phones out for years as well. It’s not difficult or to expensive to do. Why would apple not want to go multi carrier and open up the i-phone to another 86+ million peeps? The fact is at&t is scared to lose the rights to the i-phone, they know they will lose a ton of subscribers to verizon and that’s also why they are saying they are trying to fix their 3g network.

  • Verizon Customer

Personally I DON’T care if its verizon or at&t or who offers what and how.., I love all the features and apps that the iphone offers but that doesn’t mean I will leave verizon and switch to AT&T just for the phone, People forget the key reason for mobile network functionality is to have a signal when you need one and stay connected. Whether its a Motorola phone or an apple one eventually the best phones will propagate to the best network for maximum profit. Eventually apple will need to go where its most profitable (VERIZON), and that’s the luxury verizon customers will stay connected and wait

  • Dave

If Verizon gets the IPhone, AT&T is finished. o you know how many AT&T customers are going to jump ship? Their service blows. I cant wait!!!! F AT&T

  • Alex

Whatt ar they going to charge people for if they have no service?

  • gjhinson

I agree, if the IPhone goes AT&T, there will probably be a substantial number of users that switch over to Verizon. AT&T will have to reinvent themselves, and since their weak network is a sore subject for them, thats the one area they’ll have to improve on if they intend on competing with Verizon after the IPhone switches to Verizon. I have the droid phone now and its awesome, but if Verizon does get the IPhone, it’s the best network coupled with the best cell phone. Look out AT&T!

  • Mike

AT&T has no plans to increase thier capacity to meet the demands of the iPhone. Or the Blackberry for that matter.. they are dead last in customer service and satisfaction.
They have only stated that they expect New York and San Francisco to have better service in the next year or so… Are you kidding me??? what about the other 99% of your customers?? Seriously, find one place anywhere online that quotes anyone from AT&T claiming that there will be better service anywhere other than those two markets. It doesnt exist. In fact I challenge anyone out there to find one quote from anyone at AT&T that even admits that they have problems with their service at all.

  • bc1

My Blackberry had better reception and voice quality than my current iphone on the AT&T network. I believe the phone functionality/hardware of the iPhone isn’t as good as other devices but everything else is incredible. I would expect the same on Verizon unless the phone components are improved.

  • Martin

@ Mike. I believe the anti Iphone commercials were driven by motorola to help market the Droid and the “ican” campaign.
I am one of those folks who owned an iphone for a week then returned it due to the bad service in my area. I currently own the Droid and it IS an awesome phone, but I do have to admit, if the iphone comes to VZW….see ya Droid!

  • scb219

In my opinion, Apple would be stupid not to bring the iPhone to Verizon. There is a huge market for it that hasn’t been tapped yet. Just the anticipation alone of the iPhone “possibly” coming to Verizon is remarkable. The technology is there, all Apple and Verizon have to do is agree on the prices for it. I have had Verizon for about 8 years, and I have rarely had a problem with their phone service or customer service for that matter. However, I am not getting my hopes up for the iPhone coming to Verizon, and here’s why: We cannot forget about the Motorola Droid, which is a great phone. Also, the Nexus One from Google is coming to Verizon this spring. With those phones alone, Verizon has a great arsenal. If Verizon adds the iPhone to that line-up, than it’s lights out for AT&T!

  • yep its me!!!

let me give you a little lesson here!!! at&t’s 2g (edge) can do what verizon’s 3g can. at&t’s 3g is like sprints “4g”!! so verizon may have more “3g” coverage but it isnt any better. the decision was made within the last month that at&t will be extending their 3g coverage. so when we get the 3g in most of the 2g areas we will blow verizons out of the water. every company has its ups and downs but at&t has great phones and customer service. as you all have read at&t got the rights to the “android” software!! TRUE!!!! as for verizon getting the iphone! not gonna happen anytime soon. if it does in the future the iphone will probably not be the “HOT ITEM” anymore!

  • Chris J. – Harrisburg, PA

I worked for AT&T Wireless through the Cingular acquisition and AT&T Mobility rebranding. Let me begin by saying that the leadership within the AT&T as you see it today consists of Cingular + SBC culture. That is the reason AT&T will fail.

I left AT&T several years ago because when Cingular acquired them, employees were treated very badly. The company is not concerned with their employees, the quality of their network, nor their customer satisfaction, as evidenced by the December, 2009 Consumer Reports release. They are concerned with the almighty dollar; in fact, the company just laid off ALL of their Quality Assurance specialists NATIONWIDE. These are the people responsible for listening to the calls you make to AT&T Customer Care to make sure you receive a quality experience. Looking over cliff…

Shareholder value is a fantastic thing, and AT&T has generated lucrative profits since the release of the iPhone. But they pocketed all that money, gave some dividends out, and didn’t bother investing in needed network upgrades. Now you’ve got a device that demands true broadband mobility, and you have a hodgepodge time accessing it. Foot number one off cliff…

Now as far as the iPhone, I know you think that CDMA is a backwards step; it is in the fact that you can’t browse the web and talk on the phone at the same time. But realistically, how many people truly do this? When I talk on the phone (which is seldom), I commit my attention to talking. When I’m browsing the web on my phone, I don’t want to be interrupted with a phone call. Send me an email, text, or go to voicemail, please.

Remo, I’m not a complete AT&T hater. Before Cingular came in, I loved my job; it was a great place to work – nice benefits, bonus incentives, free phone service, etc. I had AT&T service for many years. But when Cingular came in, it all went south – both figuratively and literally. The service became diluted and unkept, and they moved headquarters from Redmond to Atlanta.

I moved to Verizon Wireless phone service in late 2007, and have been an extremely happy customer ever since. And keep in mind, Verizon was offered the iPhone by Apple first. They only turned it down because Apple wanted majority control. Now that Apple knows that AT&T did not adequately invest in their infrastructure, they would like to open this operation up to Verizon. This will make Verizon even more profitable, as it will Apple. Consumers would now have a choice, which is all they seek. I’m anxious to see how the balance of power shifts when Verizon gets the iPhone. And for anyone doubting that it will happen, it isn’t a matter of if, but when VZW gets the iPhone. While Verizon is already largest in terms of actual subscribers, I think the availability of the iPhone on Verizon will encourage anywhere from 1.5-4.0 million iPhone users to jump ship. And this is knowing that they won’t be able to browse the web and talk simultaneously.

And while Verizon’s 3G network usually only attains speeds of 600k-1.4Mbps, that surely trumps AT&T’s lackluster 3G coverage. With Verizon, that 3G access is available across their entire network. What good is a broadband data centric device unless you can actually use it everywhere you go? Foot number two over the cliff, and down we go!

I can’t wait for VZW to get the iPhone. There are so many online radio stations I already stream to my iPod Touch. And soon I’ll be able to listen to them in my car over Verizon’s network! Goodbye XM Radio LOL.

    Thanks for reading my novel!

  • Stephen P

Chris…you make some very good points. I, for one, couldn’t care less if I can surf the web and talk on the phone at the same time. I’m doing one or the other so it doesn’t matter to me. It’s been entertaining over the past few months watching AT&T duke it out. Regardless of what AT&T claims, let’s face it, Verizon has the largest network in the U.S. And while AT&T claims to have the fastest 3G network, like you said, it doesn’t do you any good if it isn’t reliable or available in all areas. I know a lot of people who have iPhones and they’re constantly griping about the lackluster service on AT&T.

Reading through the comments, I saw two posters claiming that a CDMA version of an iPhone will never happen. Honestly, judging by their comments, it appears they’re both possibly the same person and I suspect they’re also an AT&T employee. Regardless of what they say, I believe Chris is right. It’s not a matter of IF Verizon will get an iPhone…it’s simply a matter of WHEN. Let’s face it…Apple wants to make money. And this exclusivity has actually worked to their advantage. Just look at the iPod. When it first debuted, iTunes didn’t work on a PC. Only Apple computers, even though PCs dominated the market. People saw the iPod and thought it was cool. They wanted one, but couldn’t because they had a PC. Since you could only have one if you had an Apple computer, it became sort of a status symbol…which caused more people to want one. When Apple released a PC version of iTunes, the iPod took off and they haven’t looked back since. The same thing applies here. Apple knows, thanks to the popularity of the iPhone with AT&T, that there are millions of people out there that would like to have one…but aren’t willing to switch networks for one reason or another. I, for one, am one of them. My wife has an iPhone that was issued to her through work. We both like the phone…but my primary reason for having a phone is to make calls. And I’m not going to switch to AT&T and sacrifice coverage just so I can have an iPhone. Because of this large untapped potential, Apple may be willing to make some concessions with Verizon. With that said, Verizon has seen how popular the iPhone became and they’re probably kicking themselves a bit for not taking it when it was offered to them. So, they’re probably a lot more likely to make concessions on some issues as well to help ensure that they can get one.

I used to work for Qualcomm up until 2003 when they sold the division I was working in to Kyocera (bastards). I should ask one of my old co-workers who managed to stay with Qualcomm if there’s any truth to the rumors. They may not be able to say. But one thing we all found out working there – whatever rumor is floating around at that place is always true. For instance, when I first started there in 1998, we heard rumor that Qualcomm was going to sell a division to Ericsson. Paul Jacobs, the CEO’s son, denied it over and over. A month later, he confirmed the rumor. A year later, we heard rumor the division I worked in was going to be sold. He called the entire division in to a meeting and denied it saying Qualcomm was making too much money from their handsets. Two months later, he did an about face and confirmed we were being sold. So, if any of my old co-workers have heard rumors there, it’s probably true.

Love the iPhone but would never leave Verizon for AT&T crap service. Come to Verizon iPhone!

  • Ex Verizon/Iphone owner

I used to have verizon, and one of the reasons i left was not the iphone but because they suck and there are 3 reasons:
    1. CDMA technology is old and outdated…you cant talk and go to the web at the same time which i do a lot…CDMA phones are only compatable with the company so you cant enjoy the iphone on verizon or a CDMA sprint hero on verizon either…
    2. Verizon does have signal everywhere, i do agree with that, but the majority of that is roaming and anyone who has used a phone while roaming knows its expensive. ATT on the other had has no roaming as ATT’s signal is DIGITAL while Verizon’s is NOT. so with ATT you get signal everywhere without roaming…look it up if you dont belive me
3.99% of phones made along with 99% of the world uses GSM techonology which is supirior to CDMA. since GSM uses sim cards u can use 99% of the phones in the world with att…and to all those people who say that the iphone is the only good phone on att and without it att would be nothing, well i have a unlocked tmobile g1 and its way better than the iphone…

lastly, the iphone sucks…its a good toy but bad phone, att has service everywhere but the iphone hardware is incapable of reciveing it… and att 2g network or edge is JUST AS FAST AS VERIZON 3G IF NOT FASTER!!! google it if you dont beilve me…the “g” in 2g and 3g only stand for developement of techonology in that company and is not universal so att 3g is diff than verizon 3g…if you dont belive anything i have said than GOOGLE IT AND YOU WILL FEEL LIKE AN IDIOT

  • BadBillyBob

I have never owned an iPhone but if Verizon ever gets it’s hands on one, then people can kiss AT&T goodbye. Everyone knows that the only thing keeping AT&T alive is the iPhone.

  • Random

Very ture… most of these people are ignorant and do not understand the cocepts of technology. when i goto Germany i can not use a verizone phone. an unlocked blackberry or iphone works just fine. The smart thing apple would should do is open up to both companys because they can only recieve more money an i know im definatly not switching to verizon because they are a terrible company an well eventually go belly up if they do not upgrade there software.

  • Random

all of you have to understand that AT&T does not have bad service. The iPone is not a good phone. Fun to play with but not a good phone. i recieve excellent service with AT&T with my blackberry but my iPhone gets crudy signal. AT&T does not have the bad service it is the phone, and if they do switch the verizon network will be extremly slowed down an customers will witness that the phone is the problem; not the company. They would not announce this anytime soon because it would take intrest away from the new Apple Tablets, and would distract customers from buying iPhones now.

  • http://www.360psg.com Mike

Remo, Verizon is doing a nationwide rollout of their 4G LTE Network this spring, they will be first. It was announced to retailers and demo’ed in 4Q of 2009. Intial tests show incredible speeds, and retailers have compared it to having Fios on your phone. So, with that being said, a late 2q or early 3q launch of the iphone on VZ’s network is very possible, and very real.

It has been reported it would cost AT&T in upwards of 10 billion dollars to upgrade their network, and at least 2 years. Years of sitting back and collecting revenue for the iphone and not improving the network will come back to haunt AT&T.

Plus it makes sense for Apple. With the release of the Nexus One, and Android, Apple needs to cement itself at the dominate smartphone. There is no doubt that the Droid and Nexus will not beat the iphone, but those two phones do not help the Apple cause.

  • t

I hope verizon does get the iphone. because then the verizon network is going to fall apart. I have had att since ’02 and never had major problems with it and Im also not saying verizon sucks but im happy right where im at. I hope a crap load of people switch to verizon and leave att so that my network gets faster and faster and yours get slower and slower because there is no arguing, it would happen.

  • t

imo i dont see why apple would even bring the iphone to verizon, the last 4-5 months all verizon has been doing is bashing the iphone and att. if i were apple i would just say screw you verizon have fun with your droid. however i do think apple is going to be trying out different carriers just who knows with who. Also remember verizon turned down the iphone 3 years ago because apple was too strict and wouldn’t let verizon put their logo and software all over the phone. whos to say verizon wont just turn it down again.

  • t

I know att has far less 3g coverage. att advertised that even know it looks bad that is still 75% of the US population. I have never been without 3g coverage except when i was driving across country. but still had edge the entire way. Im also not going to bash CDMA technology because most people who do that have no idea what they are talking about. (especially when att’s 3g network does use CDMA technology) but if verizon was about to get the iphone then why in the past few months would they bash it in all of their advertising? anyways like i said above if they get it thats fine with me because thats just going to free up my network usage.

  • frank

sure Verizon has the better network but that doesn’t take away from AT&T at all. The service is not how you AT&T haters make it sound. Myself and more than 15 friends that own an iPhone have no problem with it at all. + we take advantage of the so many more features than verizon could ever offer its customers. Overall AT&T is the better of the two. Even if you don’t want to admit it. Its funny how all you verizon lovers throw out there is the network. network here network there. And in response to Jay, People would have a problem with going back to old technology as verizons. you have no problem with it because you’re already there lol.

  • Pokeballer

Well you see, WHEN VZW gets the iPhone, with the money they get from all of the customers they’re going to get from at&t, they can improve their service 10 fold. Thus making the network faster.

  • Tj

AT&T is fine if you live and never leave a metro area but if you travel for business in non-metro areas At&t can really be a pain. I have family in central Maine and I have awful service…so bad I just tell work to call the land line. My wife has verizon through work and she has service when I can’t get anything.

  • Andy

    Frank,

I have both Verizon(phone-BB) and Sprint(air card). I had AT&T for both. I understand that there are many people who have a great experience with their AT&T devices. The iphone does work better than any other AT&T devices for call quality. However, AT&T cannot and does not even come close to the coverage that one gets with Verizon. My sales territory is NC,SC,GA,TN,and FL. I cover many rural areas and Verizon is the only carrier that gets coverage. Sure if you are in a major city, any carrier is propably going to work, outside of that it is hit and mis. If you want a phone that 99.9% of the time has a signal and doesn’t drop calls, go with Verizon.

  • VZW127

Did it ever occur to you that they ran these ads to try and sell a boat load of android based phones that they had put on order well before they decided to re-negotiate with apple? When the iPhone comes to Verizon the only people that will even be mentioning those iCan adds will be the people that will have the “iCant” network of AT&T

  • 1xtremeskr

So coming from AT&T, and had Sprint, and T-mobile, I have learned many things about all carriers. One that I know many people with AT&T, and with a regular phone, the service was adequate at best, really not many dropped calls. Once they picked up the iphone, things changed. Applications were great, but they noticed the quality of the phone service, sucked. Most users say that texting and other means of communication through the iphone works better, then the phone itself. So its been rumored for months, that apple has been looking for other carriers to handle the customer based needs. So is it a surprise? no, its just a matter of time. Now I see that its time is coming sooner then later. Why limit yourself to one consumer, and segregate others? I think that Apple is getting smart, and learning that they need more customers, and not just one carriers list. The other stipulation that occurred, is when Verizon started to advertise the iphone killer as the droid. So apple took a step back and wasn’t to pleased with the ad campaign, thus setting back the time line for the advancement of the iphone to Verizon. So now, again its a matter of time, and what I have been seeing, that time may come as early as this Wednesday, or just an announcement about the future, and when this may this may all take place. So just keep your eyes and ears open, and for those Verizon customers? as like me? just wait to update your service.

  • J

That is complete crap cause it’s been proven that verizon is way better than AT&T. And to top it pods, AT&T ha got the worst coverage out of any of the main cell phone providers. Berizpn trily would be apples best bet!

  • sindy

Verizon is on Top for a reason. Verizon wins, AT&T loose. I too will be switching my current iPhone AT&T service over to Verizon. Its a great thing my contract ends with AT&T in March 2010.

  • Justin

AT&T’s network may not be the greatest, but at least they use their OWN network unlike Verizon. They still charge for roaming for Christ sake! Who the hell does that anymore? I had Verizon and within one week dropped them and went back to AT&T. The only thing good about Verizon is that I DID have service when no one else did, but when I found out that they just use other carriers towers, that was a disappointment. As far as their “3G” internet, it sucks! They claim they have DSL speed, when in fact AT&T’s 2G network blows Verizons claime 3G network out of the water. As far as dropped calls with AT&T, I’ve been with AT&T for over 6 years now and have NEVER, not one time, had a dropped call. So I say let Verizon have a whack at the insane amount usage iPhone users use on their network, let’s see how well their “fabulous” network hold up. I’m sticking with AT&T unless Verizon can come up with a T1 data network, but until then I’ll keep my AT&T.

  • Ant

Who the %#@& still pays for roaming? Talk about being old and outdated.

  • http://www.krysteria.com vakrys

AT&T voice isn’t even available where I live, let alone I’d have to travel hundreds of miles to get their 3G coverage!

  • your losers

You people need to stop mating with sheep and have the government get you real jobs and some intelligence.

Verizon service is pathetic to AT&T, and they are thieves.
They forced motorola to stop the razor from being able to
use motorola phone tools, this shows what scum really is.

You should all go with verizon, let them have the walmart employees.

Reception is maxed on all phones, you idiots act like some phones have a special booster.

Sad you will never get real jobs, don’t worry Oblowma will give you all free health care and a free ride through life.

  • Monkeywrench

Since the press confrence ended and there was no “and one more thing” does anyone still think the Iphone will come to verizon? Also has there been any talk about an Iphone 4g for AT and T because i’m looking to get one and don’t want to when there is a new Iphone right around the corner? Finnaly, if there is an Iphone for verizon I really hope they don’t screw it up and keep it mostly the same.

  • Steph

I was looking at switching to Verizon but I am an Army wife (and an educator) and need to have reliable service everywhere. Lets put it to you this way: I can walk on the beach in Hampton Roads talking wtih my aunt in Colorado and I will retain signal while the wives on AT&T, T-Mobile, etc all begin dropping out. Also, said aunt, is a tech-geek and has said on numerous occasions that she would reccomend the iPhone but not AT&T. And she lives in Colorado Springs so everytime I’m on the phone with her or my cousin who lives in DC they drop out and both have iPhones. And both are like me: love apps…but love service MORE.

  • wy

I have coverage problems with ATT, I am planing to get a verizon phone, then get a ipad. problems solved. I would have everything I need.

  • Brent

Uh, I bought a first-gen iPhone 2 1/2 months in ( as soon as they were offered refurbed ), and was very happy with it until I finally dropped it enough to kill the home button ( my fault entirely ). Upgraded to 3G, was very happy with it. Within a month of the 3GS being released, I could not use the phone anymore, as I was dropping EVERY 4th call. Seriously. Same route home, same time of day. 1 of 4.
I have to assume that you’re in a part of the country that has enough Cingular, errr, “AT&T” capacity to keep your phone up and running. I am not ( and Denver is not a small town ). Blanket statements tend to indicate ignorance; you’re not helping your cause, whether it be employment with AT&T, or your love of the iPhone ( which is still the best device out there, just has become useless with the limitations of the Cingular, errr, “AT&T” network.

  • Mark

I have AT&T, with an Iphone. I have been doing testing for Verizon, via Qualcom for the past year. The service of Verizon is far superior to AT&T. There is no better test than driving at highway speeds, local speeds, through rural and urban areas with Vcast on for 8 hours at a time, with no interruptions. Streaming is ultra quick, seems quicker than my wifi on the Iphone. I have DirecTv superfan and can watch the games streaming through my Iphone, and Vcast is at least 5x better. Your comment of AT&T being better is ridiculous. Day-in and Day-out Verizon has outperformed AT&T.

  • Love/Hate

I LOVED my iPhone, but the GSM service is so sketchy with cell calls I had to dump it. I travel 8 states in the Southeast and it was impacting my ability to conduct business. I gave it to my daughter and she was thrilled. Went back to Verizon and drop maybe 1 call a month when I’m driving past the airport. I will be all over a CDMA iPhone!

  • Mike

My question is where people get the idea that CDMA and LTE are great technologies. Upon any amount of unbiased research, you can easily see why GSM is the worldwide standard and CDMA/LTE is an (widely) American-only technology.

GSM is just far superior and much, much more versatile. What is the best GSM carrier in the U.S.? AT&T (your opinion means nothing). What other countries are doing as much complaining as you VZW customers out there? None.

Sure, VZW was the first carrier that Apple tried to negotiate with. Even my pet hamster could have told you that deal would have never gone through. VZW saw their mistake and adopted the Droid, and allowed the Droid to BE a Droid. Typically, all VZW phones are sub-par compared to their alterior-carrier brethren due to VZW’s inability to LEAVE PHONE SOFTWARE ALONE! I’m not a big fan of Apple’s business practices, but I must thank them for causing this new trend at VZW.

In any case, I see this as a pretty good business opportunity for both VZW and Apple…if VZW can learn one more new trend…financial compromise.

For Steve Jobs to be such a genius he is also an idiot. Has he not made enough money, does he not have a loyal following. Why wont he listen to his customers and read and head the blogs and twits. Just give us a verizon iphone already or tell us when to expect one. Why keep us in the dark.

  • Dean

Frank, you and your 15 friends must live within half a mile of an AT&T tower in San Antonio…because while the iPhone is great technology that all of us want, I was trading multiple calls a day with a friend living a mile from Atlanta Hartsfield Airport (I live in the midst of Chicago), and any call from him longer than 5 minutes would *ALWAYS* get dropped at least once. When he was here visiting in one of Chicago’s hippest urban neighborhoods, he couldn’t even GET a signal on his iPhone. Yes, in the middle of the nation’s third largest city, AT&T’s coverage sucks. Their coverage outside of metropolitan areas is non-existent, their coverage INSIDE metropolitan areas is spotty at best…it does no good to have an iPhone if you can’t use it because you can’t connect to a network: it becomes an expensive paperweight. On the other hand, I’ve never had a problem picking up a signal on Verizon, whether it be Chicago, Atlanta, the California desert, Washington, rural Pennsylvania and Virginia, the side of Mt. Hood, or the hinterlands of Michigan. If Verizon would get off their butts and give their customers the option of iPhones, they would kill off AT&T wireless. Period.

  • Dean

“Ex-Verizon”…I’ve had Verizon Wireless service for YEARS, and I’ve travelled all over the country with it–big cities to cornfields to forests to deserts–and I have *never* had to pay roaming charges. You’re the one who feels like an idiot–that destroys all your credibility.

  • The Mexican! =D

I dont like neither of them two.. i used to like celular one but at&t bought it away so there goes a good company. I realy hope that verizon get their prices lowered down because 150 a month is killing me!

  • Jasmine

I do am waiting until Verizon releases the iPhone. To be honest, I was debating on whether to leave Verizon for AT&T strictly because of the iPhone and then it was back to reality and I realized I would so much rather have outstanding coverage then not to outstanding. As far as coverage is concerned going to AT&T would be a downgrade! So yes, I’m still waiting, patiently waiting and I hope that we all see the iPhone with Verizon in 2010!! I can’t keep waiting like this though! I’m due for an upgrade in 2 months, but I will give it at least 7 before changing phones! Luckily my Samsung Omnia works perfect and I love it to death, or else I would have to let it go more sooner than later!

Just curious, do you think your CDMA phone will work with LTE technology? Or how about the other 89 million customers phones?

  • GrandCountyJim

Living on a ranch the Colorado mountains, my Verizon service was pretty good over the years through a long series of cell phones including Palms and Blackberries. Now I have an iPhone which I like, because it interfaces best with my Macs. But the AT&T coverage is poor and the service very costly. Apple is obviously $ cleaning up on their deal with AT&T but has thus far shirked responsibility for their pact with a bad partner. Bad-mouthing AT&T is futile; Apple is the outfit that should take serious heat if we want to get anything done.

  • Fan

My husband and I want to purchase an iphone for each of us. But, we will not leave Verizon. So, we will wait until we can get an iphone on Verizon. Hope it happens in 2010! There are two other people in our family who have the same position. Thank you.

  • THOMAS MURREN

AT&T SHOULD NOT KEEP THE IPHONE IF THEY CAN'T GIVE BETTER SERVICE.
WHY CAN'T AT&T JUST COPY VERIZON'S SYSTEM AND SEE HOW THEY DO IT.
AT&T JUST CAN'T KEEP GIVING POOR SERVICE YEAR IN & YEAR OUT.AT&T SHOULD
TAKE THEIR SERVICE MORE SERIOUS, THEY DON'T.THEY DESERVE TO LOSE THE
IPHONE .AT&T THINK'S THEY HAVE IT MADE BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE IPHONE. I HAVE VERIZON SERVICE & IM NOT LEAVING VERIZON, UNLESS AT&T GIVES BETTER SERVICE,IPHONE OR NOT.

  • guestia

    why would they use cdma?

  • http://www.jamentevents.com Jesse

They Reason I don't get an IPhone is because of the bad Network. If Verizon would get it, I would buy two phones in a second. I'm in sales and I can't afford to miss or have a dropped call.

  • Matt

As I read through all the comments that vaccilate between AT&T or Verizon having the superior network, one or the other being the better company in terms of customer service or employment, or whether or not Steve Jobs is a genius, the fact remains that Apple can get more market share if they offer the iphone on other carriers. Verizon has already indicated that they are not trying to tout just one smartphone product, hence the blackberry and Droid offerings. I think that Verizon will be more likely in the long run to put money into their network to make whatever changes are necessary to support the iphone. Even if they stay with their current technology, they will gather a huge market for bringing in Apple's hardware. It is a matter of when. For those of you who believe Verizon has inferior technology, and that will make a difference in people switching over…all I can say is look what happened in the VHS/Beta and the PC/Apple wars.

  • Jon D

I Really Want to see Apple to allow verizon to carry the Iphone. The Iphone has always been an AT&T thing and if the oppotunity portrayed itself for verizon customers to get an iphone, Verizon would surpass AT&T by alott! I would get an Iphone in a heartbeat seeing that since Verizon service has never given me issues. Even some of the AT&T subscibers complain about service in most areas with the Iphone.

  • JT3

I live in Houston and everyone I know with an iphone has service issues. My wife has an iphone and it rocks…but AT&T service sucks…plain and simple. Constant dropped calls. I have Verizon air cards for my users here at work and purchased two AT&T air cards in hopes they would cover a couple of remote places in TX which I travel. They did not work in the remote locations and my users who had them complained so much I got out of the contract early and went with old faithful…Verizon.

  • Chris

I just want to not have to carry around my iTouch and cell phone all the time. Its annoying, and people think I'm obsessed carrying around 2 devices all the time.

  • Narg

Wow are you clueless. AT&T still remains the best connected provider on the planet. Verison's history is so full of holes, it's not funny. You watch too many lying TV commercials.

  • Narg

I can't wait for Verizon to get the iPhone either. That way people will finally see that Verizon is as much of a crap provider as AT&T is. Then the bull will stop flowing.

  • Leslie

My exact thoughts! ATT sucks so much. Their lack of customer service besides lack of any "real" coverage! Love the IPhone but hate ATT. Just to prove the point, we were in a serious car accident this weekend and I had no coverage and my boyfriend, who has Verizon, was able to call 911.

  • Barry

Wrong! Conducted a little test with a Verizon phone and an AT&T phone 2 feet from each other. 2 people, one with each phone, made a list of 10 webpages. A blackberry phone on the Verizon network was 7 webpages into the test when the identical blackberry on AT&T finally opened the first one. So please, don't tell me that AT&T's 2g is as good at Verizon's 3g, it's simply not. We by these things so we will always have a phone, the rest is a luxury. I have NOT found a place, not even in the desert in Baja, Mexico that my Verizon phone would not work……I love it. And a year ago when I was with AT&T I did more counting days until my contract ended than I did staying connected.

  • Ron

I don't know who the dummy was that said that att did not have roaming charges and verizon does….but I would rather have service through another carrier that verizon has a deal or agreement with than not to have service at all. Att has shot themselves in the foot. The map is correct, 3g is spotty and att was upset at the commericals but it hurts when the truth is out. I have had att, sprint and verizon and verizon is the best hands down. I don't care if their 3g is slower, I doubt many can tell the difference anyways.

Att's commerical that shows all of the places they have service is edge at best and it doesn't compare. I know for sure my wife has the iphone and she will be talking at boom, the call is lost. I have seen her phone on the net on the edge network at it is slow!

I hope the verizon iphone does come through, I may or may not get it…….I like the Blackberry's, they are the ulitmate phone for business users for sure!

  • Hank

I've Had an iPhone for two years. I think its a great device. The service area I'm in has steadily improved since I've been using the iPhone. I don't travel any great distances to need any more than what I've pushed the phone for already. My limited exposure has all been very good. I have no complaints about the product or the service.

  • Jason

Verizon will never get the iPhone aha!

  • jenn

I personally browse the web and talk at the same time. I pull up emails while on the phone with clients and sent them as well and as multitasking individual I would not switch knowing that I would not be able to use that function of the phone. might as well buy a cheap knock of version of the iphone if you want to be with verison why spend the money on something you cant fully use?

  • STC Construction

Ex Verizon…since you are intent on calling others "idiots"….lets clarify something here…YOU ARE the "IDIOT" here…at least you sure are making yourself out to be one.

    You said…and I quote:
"2. Verizon does have signal everywhere, i do agree with that, but the majority of that is roaming and anyone who has used a phone while roaming knows its expensive. ATT on the other had has no roaming as ATT's signal is DIGITAL while Verizon's is NOT. so with ATT you get signal everywhere without roaming…look it up if you dont belive me"

Roaming? Who pays for roaming?!?!! Every carrier INCLUDES it in their plans! I think YOU need to use "Google" more often as well. Maybe you should try "Bing" as it seems that your google information isn't up to snuff.

  • STC Construction

Had to split up my post….

Also…so you can surf the web while on the phone….who cares! I would GLADLY do away with that option to have no dropped calls. I have traveled all over the east coast…even into the deep areas of the south where there is virtually no cellular coverage…guess who had coverage 99.8% of the time even WAY out in the "sticks".

On a closing note…Apple would be completely foolish to turn down 80+ million possible targets of their phone. I would venture to guestimate that at least 1/6th to 1/4 of those customers will switch their current phone for the iPhone when elegible to do so. (If not more.) My best friend has has the iPhone from AT&T since it came out and he has been saying from day one….the only thing holding him back from switching to Verizon is that phone…so many like him will say "good-bye" to AT&T as soon as Verizon opens up their doors for slaes of the iPhone.

  • STC COnstruction

This is where I come in…

If we take away ALL the favoritisim….all the biast opinions…and ONLY look at the "brass tacks"…as you stated scb219….Apple would be completely foolish NOT to go to Verizon with their technology. When we go right down to the numbers…they don't lie…they don't choose sides.

Bottom line is…Apple AND Verizon stand to make MILLIONS and boost share profit margins and overall company values!

AND THAT my friends….IS the bottom line…it's all about the $$-MONEY-$$.

  • STC Construction

    Ahmen Barry!

  • Salsa

Verizon seriously needs to stop jerking people around and come out with the iphone verizon would get more business and make a hell of alot more money the best carrier and the best cell phone out there"popularity wise" that would make verizon unstoppable not that they are not already. AT&T sucks the only good thing about them is the iphone besides that there a sucky phone company. I personally have verizon and i have wanted an iphone for a while but there is no way in hell i would down grade to AT&T. I know i am not alone when it comes to the 80 million plus verizon people wanting iphone for verizon wireless. no offence there in no way in hell the droid x can kick the iphones ass it is an ugly ass looking phone. the iphone is the way to go it is cute and slim and you can listen to your ipod music on the phone. what is there not to love. it would be a hell of alot easier than carrier around a cell phone and an ipod.

  • macguy

    you bet

  • macguy

definitely. iphone is the only thing that keeps them from going out of buisiness

  • Hold On A $econd

Well, before we all get worked up about this, we all know about Verizon's new required data plans, which start at $10.00 a month. Let's do the math: That's $120.00 a year for phones that aren't even smartphones! And that's added on to the cost of the plan itself! Phones like the Droid require data plans starting at $30.00 a month. That means $360.00 a year and up! They'll probably charge over $40.00 a month! For some people, $480.00 a year may be worth it, but I don't see the reason to pay that price just for an iPhone. I'd just suck it up and move on.

  • Josey Spencer

Hi I am 14 and i am on verizon and i love it no offence to at&t but i get better service with it so ! I an't wait til verizon gets the iphone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pop

    at&t sucks, come to verizon!

  • gemgal

I have an ulocked and jailbroken iPhone, but use T-Mobile. My phone works better on T-Mobile. I say this because I originally got an iPhone with AT&T, and it sucked!!!!! Dropped calls constantly!!!!! So I switched to T-Mobile and got my unlocked/jailbroken iPhone to use there. Lightening years better.

  • Bob

Apple does not need to differentiate the VZW iPhone from the ATT one… VZW's network already does that by offering more voice coverage, data 3G coverage and better customer service.

  • Verison customer

You are so RIGHT ! But we will all end up paying for this mass exodous from AT&T to Verison as the former att customers start rolling into verison, I see price hikes ! just another way for verison to coner the maket. They are smart for doing this
