Apple taking iPhone to Verizon Wireless: The Discussion

Apple taking iPhone to Verizon Wireless: The Discussion

By: Peter Chubb | December 24, 2009 | 45 Comments

The rumors of the Apple iPhone going to Verizon never seems to go away, as we enter 2010 these constant discussions online will only intensify as AT&T are due to lose their exclusivity. Verizon has been working hard on improving its network to handle the demands of the extra load that the iPhone will bring.

AT&T recently said that the iPhone is not going anywhere and that they will be able to fully support a 4G version. Unlike Verizon, as they will not be 4G ready for another 1-2 year. Both Apple and Verizon have held talks in the past, but neither could agree on the terms.

We know that Verizon is the preferred network carrier in the U.S., but they would rather push their own V Cast app store rather than Apple’s. All the time that Verizon makes demands like that they have no hope of getting the iPhone. This is a hard choice to make, the customers will want the better Verizon network but would much rather stick with Apple’s App Store.

Information Week has a great theory; they believe that T-Mobile stands more of a chance getting the iPhone before Verizon. The reason is because they will be more willing to meet with Apple’s demands, however this is just speculation and AT&T could keep hold of the exclusivity agreement for another year.

If you had the choice, which network would you like to see the iPhone on?

I would like to see Verizon but i feel like it would become a dulled down phone so I kind of want to see Sprint. If they could get the 4G to work with the iPhone that would be sick. I don’t know how great their coverage is but they claim they are the only network with 4G. Why not go with Sprint then??

Personally If T-mobile got the Iphone I would switch over from AT&T in a heart beat. At&T should change their ad campaign to “less bars in more places” because its exactly that. Everywhere I don’t have bars T-mobile seems to have full service. I’ve even gone to multiple locations that Verizon doesn’t have service and T-mobile does. I have gone threw all plans from all three carriers and it looks like T-mobile would provide a better rate plan then all. Providing they keep there current plans and not have special iphone rates. Lastly, Apple’s Iphone is by far the most superior smart phone to date. Hands Down. It has so much more to offer then any phone on the market. The only two flaws apple made is a exclusive contract with AT&T and no damn camera flash! But, that will all be fixed in a matter of time and I can 101% guarantee it.

  • twitniclarisse

would like to see it with Verizon, but hopefully they will let apple provide the apps and verizon apps side by side

  • JM

Tmobile? What makes you think they are better? They roam off of a lot of ATT towers. They have less 3G than ATT. And its a lot slower. Are you kidding me?

  • Ron B

Waiting on the Iphone from Verizon….

  • craigcski

Apparently you misunderstood my statement. I said personally. Meaning where I live T-mobile has the best service. I’ve had Cingular/AT&T for 10yrs. I would have left AT&T a while ago if it wasn’t for the Iphone. So no I’m not kidding you.

I would love to see Verizon think about the big picture and realize that they would probably make more money than they are now by getting the IPhone but using Itunes instead of VCast. I know so many people who switched over to AT&T just to get an IPhone and regret it due to the lack of service, every one of them would switch back to Verizon in a heart beat if they could have the IPhone

  • ScottM

I would like to see it on T-Mobile if rate plans remain the same.

  • ScottM

Especially with the increase in fines that Verizon just pushed. I would stay with AT&T if they did not increase pricing which has been discussed. Plus I would like to see that the iPhone fixes whatever problems they are having with the ability to connect to the different towers.

I have had both Verizon an dAT&T and AT&T’s coverage has improved dramatically in NW GA. I will not leave but if it improves the network even more if some of the other users drop out I think that would be great.

Verizon’s CDMA network is technically inferior to GSM, no talk and surf at the same time for instance which I use al the time with the iPhone.

The 4G network should correct that problem but who wants to wait two or more years to see it built up enought to be viable.

  • Craig Marker

Either way – whether it be Verizon or T-Mobile, I’m leaving AT&T.

  • Camcbride

You must don’t know that you can use a Iphone on T-mobile. I have the Iphone now it just don’t work at 3gSpeed. T-mobile plans are a lot cheaper than At&t….

  • kait

Im going to be one of the first people pre-ordering the iphone for verizon.

  • Michael

Will only get iPhone if it goes to Verizon. I have had horrible service with AT&T and Sprint. And furthermore, AT&T has the WORST customer service in the industry.

  • http://www.twistedmall.com Jacob

Verizon by far would be the best network for the iphone. But they would have to keep itunes and not their app store for iphone customers. I am a current Verizon customer and would buy an iphone the day Verizon got them. I currently have a Blackberry Storm. Hope they get the iphone in 2010 im tired of waiting.

  • StaceeD

I’d go with Verizon or TMobile- as soon as it opens to someone other than AT&T, the iPhone is mine!! I’m Verizon now so that would suite me fine, but if TMobile got it, I’d leave Verizon. Just won’t do it until I can have more options than AT&T. Their plans are insanely overpriced for the nothing you get!!

  • derek

I would so buy the iPhone if it came to verizon. have said that to myslef for 3 years!

  • Colin Hanna

In a second. (Shorter than a heartbeat. That is, shorter than my resting heartbeat, anyway.)

  • Mike

I don’t know about the Verizon app store. Right now Verizon allows the useage of Android Market and Blackberry App world, and whatever they use for Windows mobile. So personally, that seems like the least of issues. It would be very nice to have a Verizon iPhone. I would definitely consider that over another touch screen BlackBerry

  • iPhone Wanter

I think when at&t looses exclusivity, that will be the end of their wireless division. The only thing they have going for them is, if you want an iphone you are stuck with at&t…

There is no cellphone provider that is better than Verizon Wireless. I have used most of the big ones over the years and would not change from Verizon for anything, except maybe free service for life, even then I would probably keep my Verizon account for when others have no service.

  • Dealer

If verizon get this it will drive the price down.

  • Sarah

The only company that has consistant service in my area is verizon, I would love to get the iphone but it would be of no use in an area that it can’t send text nevermind make phonecalls or download apps. AT&T is great where it works, mayby they should expand their coverage before they make what limited areas they have “better”

  • fred

In have had a iphone 3gs with att for about a year now, I have not had any problems with att service at all. My current iphone and carrier are the best I’ve ever had. I was a prevoius Tmobile customer for about 8 years, the phones were okay but the service was bad. Poor reception problems, no 3g signal,etc.etc.etc. Att provides me with great 3g coverage, no dropped calls and great customer service.

  • Kyle

I am the only one in my family that has stayed with Verizon because I believe having service is much more important then having the best phone. I want the iphone more then anything cause, well I just love it, but I will not give AT&T my business ever. I seen that company screw so many people with cable and internet. I’m sure their phone service is about the same.

All the time I have to continually let my family use my phone to make a call because they have no service. Whats the point of a smart phone when it never can update? Its not like we’re out in rural America I live in Corona, CA.

Verizon I also do not want to see Vcast on the iphone unless its an app because Vcast is lame. Apple is way better in every way when it comes to organization and overall aesthetic.

  • Rick

I had Verizon for a year and a half then switched to AT&T because of the expensive bills and since all my friends had AT&T and I could talk to them for free. Ten months later, I realized I made a huge mistake. I never had so many dropped calls, and two bars on my BlackBerry. AT&T is the worst service I ever had. You may not surf the web and chat on Verizon, but internet is 100x faster and I only had a two gliches in one year. With AT&T, I have a glich every week.

Bottom line is if Verizon would adopt the iPhone, I would throw my BlackBerry in the Hudson River and switch back (well, maybe not literally).iPhone would simply drop V Cast only for the iPhone. They wouldn’t make any profits with verizon apps because apple apps are more vast. Plus who would need 4G if the network is stronger. Verizon may be pricey and of course you would cough up lots of dollars on the data plan, but you’re getting your paying for what you get–the best service in America.

  • David Ng.

T-Mobile gets my support. They have a great customer service.

  • Bruce

Can anyone help me. My friend has the original Iphone from two years ago and has never downloaded I tunes or synchronized her phone and is now having troubles with the internet, her text messages and e-mails. When she downloaded itunes and synched her phone she kept getting error messages and would not let her sync the phone. Her firewall and virus protection was disabled also. Why can’t she get the latest version downloaded to her phone. Any suggestions????????????????????

  • eshawl

Will not buy an iphone until it is on the Verizon network. As much as I love the iphone it is not worth changing networks. To many of my family and friends are on the Verizon network and the coverage is the best! Apple, you would have many more sales if you would just work with Verizon!!!!!

  • Norm

I have been with Verizon for years after putting up with all the poor service and dropped calls from AT & T. The day IPhone is available with Verizon with full service, I’ll buy it!

  • http://twitter.com/rifaavalon chris

Just wanted to comment on the stupidity that is going on in the comments and from the article. Verizon does not keep you from going to an App store. App World and Android Marketplace are fully functional on the network, you don’t have to use VCast, unless of you course you are a moron and can’t help yourself.

I can surf and talk just fine on CDMA (at the same time no less), this is a garbage assumption. Seems to me that my Curve 8330 can do all of that stuff. Better stop drinking the At&t kool-aid kids.

Maybe the writer of the article and the people writing comments need to do some research on the topic before posting anything.

Look up Vodafone and iPhone. The iPhone is coming to vodafone next year in the UK. Vodafone and Verizon are partners in Verizon wireless. Seems much more likely that Verizon would get it over T-Mobile. Why would they go to T-Mobile, when its the same exact garbage GSM system that At&t uses? After all T-Mobile piggybacks off of At&t, much like Sprint’s CDMA off of Verizon.

  • Ali2

My husband has T-mobile for Europe; I have Verizon for better coverage in the US. I had AT&T and Comcast and found them to be disreputable and the customer service non-existent. We will NEVER (NEVER!) get an iPhone as long as AT&T is the only provider. I had Sprint for a land line. Bad experience and never going to them either. I would use a can on a string before switching to any of these three providers.
So… bottom line… we would get an iPhone for both/either T-Mobile and/or Verizon. Just waiting for the announcement.

  • Kevin

Thank you Chris for saying what I was going to say. Verizon long has abandoned using only vCast and “dummy” down the phones. The BlackBerry Storm was the first, followed by the Droid and Droid Eris. Droid specifically, Verizon never even touched. So that is NOT the reason VZW wouldn’t get the iPhone.

If VZW doesn’t get the iPhone, it will be because either ATT re ups with Apple, or because Verizon things all the sales would bog down the network.

If Verizon can figure out a way to keep the Network as good as it is (see: ATT big city 3G failure due to the iPhone), then Verizon will push hard to grab the extra consumers.

  • Nate J

If Verizon really has a problem with Apples App Store they are retarded. I had the Iphone but At&t ticked me off.
Verizon just needs to go ahead a and suck it up.

  • Jake J

Nexus One is coming. Google is one of the few players with the pure power to overtake Apple and the iphone. They have the web presence, the money, and the backing. They will create their own app store, there will be thousands of apps available i ashrt time, and their phone will do everything the iphone does and more. And Verizon will have it in a few months. I love Apple, but now they can go pound sand. They excluded me from having an iphone all this time by making the deal they did with AT&T and not putting it on Verizon. So now that I have another choice, and it will probably end up a better choice, I will not buy an iphone now no matter how cheap it is or whether they put it on Verizon or not. Just watch what Google does now. Apple will be sorry.

  • brett

    i say F the v cast apps

  • AJ

The new droid operating system can talk and surf with verizon. I don’t understand why a new iPhone would be any different. If DROID can do it Apple can.

  • joe

verizon is the best. i wont get the iphone until it goes to verizon. sprint and t mobile suck dick

  • dtran

I almost got the iphone last month and just couldn’t make the switch. leaving verizon is not worth any phone. Verizon – you would monopolize cell communication is you can get the iphone, so get it already

  • Austin

yeah same here. I have beenwaiting so long for the iphone to be on verizon. i justhope it won’t cost much.

  • Brad

I couldn’t agree more! I have been waiting for the iphone to come to Verizon since the phone was first introduced. I even half contemplated leaving Verizon for the iphone, but quickly came to my senses. Verizon just needs to realize that V-Cast sucks and stop wasting time and money on it.

If Apple does announce the iphone to be going to Verizon, my Droid and Storm will be up on E-Bay right away!

  • Melissa

I want the Iphone so bad but will wait for it to go to Verizon. My only concern is that when we get the Iphone we won’t get some of the features like the ability to talk check out a restaurant then send it to that person while still on the call. So if Verizon could get the Iphone with all the features that it has with AT&T then that would be awesome.

  • Megan

I’m completely with all the Verizon supporters on this one! AT and T just plain sucks! Why not market both the VCast and iTunes stores on the phone? We get our iPhone, Verizon gets their frigging VCast just like they wanted, and everyone is happy! Sounds plausible to me.

  • Donna

I would be extremely excited to have Verizon pick up the iPhone. After working for Apple for 10+ years and being on the Newton team, this phone is what I was looking for over 10 years ago. I have been with AT&T, Sprint, Qwest, etc and all their network sucks. My kids have TMobile and they are even worse than AT&T. They never have service, always drop calls, etc.

My mom travels with her sister who has AT&T and her sister always borrows my moms phone to make calls since she has not service on AT&T.

I can care less about the 4G network if I could have an iPhone on the Verizon network. A

It would be to Apples advantage to switch to Verzion. Think of the profits…..I bet there would be an overload of people that would jump ship from AT&T and go to Verizon in a second. Come on Apple, get with the picture! I know that Steve Jobs likes money so this would be the way to go….

  • hezzy

I agree 110%! I'm one who would switch back. Verizon is the best.

  • Mike G

One thing is for sure is that Ivan Seidenberg's report card has very little to offer in a grade point average. He failed to bring the Iphone to Verizon and Verizon seems to be paying for that right now. Verizon needs this to happen and they know it. Hopefully when he retires (which can't come soon enough) He successor will close the deal with Apple, which is rumored to be in the works. I think AT&T customers will fully jump onto the Verizon network and and it will bring new customers just as well. Here's hoping that the CDMA version of the Iphone rings in the New Year
