Google Nexus One Phone: Release Date Update

By Peter Chubb - Dec 17, 2009

There has been a number of smartphone launches in 2009 but Google wants to be the first to offer a new handset in 2010. We have heard a number of rumors about the first Google-branded handset “Nexus One” with many suggesting a January launch. However, Reuters has been talking to a few of their sources and suggest a release in the first week of January, maybe the 5th.

Looking at all the previous news, there are suggestions that the Google Phone will be sold Sim-free, owners will then choose which carrier they want to get a contract on. Google will offer the Nexus One on the day of launch and reports say that other vendors will also sell the handset.

CES 2010 is in January, and Google will be there showing off their first branded handset. Not certain how close they will be to Motorola or Verizon, as they are upset about the search engine giant branching out on their own like this.

We already know some of the specs of the phone, well if you can believe what you read. The handset will support quad-band GSM/Edge as well as UMTS/HSDPA. There is to be a large OLED touchscreen of unspecified size, and is to be powered by the powerful 1Ghz Snapdragon processor.

Google has been approached on a number of occasions, but have declined to comment. When do you think the Nexus One will be launched?
