Details of Intel’s Core i7-980X extreme edition processor have recently shown up on SlashGear, this particular chip is scheduled for a latter half of Q1 2010 release.

Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition: A Detailed First Look

The i7-980X features 6 cores at 3.33GHz, it also features a 12MB ‘Intel Smart Cache’, it supports technologies such as ‘Intel’s Hyper-Threading Technology’ and ‘Intel’s Turbo Boost Technology’.

Other things worth mentioning include the fact that the chip uses the LGA1366 socket and has an integrated memory controller.

There are also rumors suggesting that this particular chip will be utilized in a new Mac Pro workstation, currently Apple offer a quadcore Xeon chip at 3.33GHz, therefore a six-score chip at the same frequency will vastly improve performance (and vastly inflate the price).
