Verizon iPhone and Apple: Partnership Would Not Work

Verizon iPhone and Apple: Partnership Would Not Work

By: Peter Chubb | December 12, 2009 | 8 Comments

The rumors of a Verizon iPhone just do not go away and for good reason, as customers do not want to move over to AT&T just to get the ultimate smartphone. There is one thing standing in the way of this though, and that is a partnership with Apple.

It is no secret that Verizon and Apple have had a few disagreements over a deal with the iPhone, so would a partnership ever work? We know that Verizon has been speding huge amounts of money on an aggressive ad campaign, which has landed them in court.

These TV ads were not pointed at the iPhone, this would be stupid, instead Verizon were targeting AT&T and its patchy 3G coverage. Thankfully, Verizon won the case and have kept up with their ads, but at what cost?

As we mentioned above, talks between Apple and Verizon have not gone smoothly and we have seen in the past that once you upset Apple, they do not forget that easy. This could certainly have an affect when the iPhone exclusivity with AT&T ends in the summer of 2010.

There is another point to be made though, recent news suggests that AT&T are not happy with the high amount of data bandwidth being used on their network, we have to wonder if Verizon would want the same to happen on theirs.

It may be fun and profitable for internet journalists to configure the relationship between Verizon and Apple as a nasty personal feud, but at some point it needs to be recognized that these companies couldn’t survive unless they are driven by business decisions. They disagree about revenue sharing, and Verizon believes that it can make more money by pushing iPhone alternatives than by conceding to Apple’s requirements. Apple is selling as many iPhones as its subcontractors can produce without severe quality problems, so it has little incentive to give up profit to Verizon.

How about spending more time investigating why Motorola, Palm, and RIM cannot match or exceed iPhone quality and ease-of-use?

Try it and you know why but if kindergarten building blocks are your cup of tea what can I say.

The reason Motorola, Palm, et al, cannot match iPhone ease of use is Verizon and other providers control the software. Manufacturers must write their phone software within the providers quidelines if the manufacturer wants them to market their phone. This was one of the major sticking points between Apple and Verizon when they were approached by Apple as the original provider for the iPhone. Verizon would not relinquish software control which is what Apple does so well. (And the money arrangement as well). Which is why – after 2-1/2 years of living with Verizons despicable Samsung phone software as well as their awful customer service system – I am finally ready to accept ATTs awful service just to get my hands on a great phone.

I want the iPhone but I don’t want to switch to AT&T, I’ll have to wait patiently for the official word if Verizon will get the iPhone, in the mean time I’ll stick to the blackberry.

After 15 years with Verizon and having 5 lines with them, I moved my own line over to AT&T and bought the iPhone 16G 3GS. I had to leave my family with Verizon for now until their contracts end. Guess, what……AT&T is pretty good in my area (NJ). I travel to NY, PA, NJ and Maryland and I couldn’t be happier with the phone (voice) and 3G service. If you are contemplating getting the iPhone, don’t worry about it and forget ALL of the negative Blogs and articles that have been posted here and in other web based media. For a long time I was hesitant to switch because of what I read.

What got me to move were all of the NEGATIVE Verizon Ads. I have been buying Mac’s since the mid ’80′s and became extremely upset the way Verizon “bullied” AT&T and in a sense the iPhone (I thought the Misfit Toys was a good one though). So, I agree with those who stated here and in the past that AT&T really took a chance with the iPhone due to the dfact that there are those who really do eat up the bandwidth via the unlimited data. Verizon is just a big “control freak” company. They control the handset makers and they control us, the users.

I tried the Mifi, but was unhappy with using three devices – my Razr, Mifi and iPod Touch (great device and getting better). Get this – Verizon charges $40 for a max of 250MB of download per month, $60 for 5G – that’s controlling and profits for Verizon. Compared to $30 for unlimited data with AT&T (hopefully they won’t change that).

    @Frank
You are outright lying when you are comparing the two plans. You are comparing “apples” to oranges and you know full well you are lying. Geez, talk about misleading and controlling.

How about I fix your info for you ok?

First off, yes Verizon DOES charge $39.99 a month for 250MB of data transfer on WIRELESS MODEMS/MIFI devices. Similarly true is it that Verizon charges $59.99 a month for 5GB of data transfer on WIRELESS MODEMS.

Also it is true that AT&T charges $30.00/month for unlimited data transfer on SMARTPHONES.

Are you seeing where you are wrong yet? Are you seeing where you are misleading people and lying by saying that the Verizon plan is more expensive for the same exact thing? If you haven’t figured it out yet, the two plans that you compared are NOT THE SAME EXACT THING.

Verizon Wireless charges $29.99 for my unlimited BlackBerry plan. THE SAME as AT&T charges for the iPhone data plan that you quote(well actually it’s a penny less, per month, per user X millions of users, but still…it’s only a penny). All in all, unlimited SMARTPHONE data pricing IS THE SAME for both carriers.

Now lets look at the WIRELESS MODEM offerings again. Using direct quotes from the carrier’s websites:

Verizon Wireless: Mobile Broadband 250 MB = $29.99
    AT&T: DataConnect 200 MB = $35.00

Verizon gives you 50MB/month MORE, for $5.01 LESS a month!

Verizon Wireless: Mobile Broadband 5 GB = $59.99
    AT&T: DataConnect 5 GB = $60.00

Verizon and AT&T are pretty much exactly the same when it comes to the 5GB data plan.

Stop lying Frank. The rest of your post I’m okay with, but don’t go lying about pricing saying one is more expensive than the other and is a “control freak” for being so (Frank said:”that’s controlling and profits for Verizon”), when the reverse is actually the case with the pricing and even still AT&T rounds their pricing UP to collect just a little more from the cumulative of their users. They are both out to make money but why is AT&T charging more for the same or less data transfer on all three plans? Why is Verizon somehow the bad guy here?
