2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata: 50 MPG+ Thanks to SKY-G Engine

2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata: 50 MPG+ Thanks to SKY-G Engine

There are rumors that Mazda are planning some big changes for its 2011 MX-5 Miata, although the carmaker has yet to make an official announcement. If rumors are correct, then the new model will come with the SKY-G Engine offering more than 50 MPG, some reports suggest 70 MPG.

Engadget has been doing some digging and have learned that the new model will be smaller than the current MX-5, and will weigh just 2,200 pounds. That SKY-G Engine is a 1.3-liter with four cylinders. That fuel figure is amazing considering that it is not a diesel or hybrid, but we have to wonder if these figures are correct.

According to Inside Line, they are not certain if that new engine will have a 1.3 or 1.5-liter displacement, but they assume that the power unit will push out 150hp. Many experts have been trying to understand how the Miata could offer these amazing fuel results, but Mazda are keeping tight lipped.

Inside Line report that Toyota has already made inquires about the SKY-G, so we could begin to see more vehicles adopt these power units. We will have to wait at least a few more months before Mazda decide to offer any more information.

Do you think that these fuel figures are correct, or are they just wishful thinking on Mazda’s part?
