Wii, Xbox 360, PS3: What’s selling Christmas 2009?

John Lewis have announced that Nintendo Wii game consoles have been flying of shelves, they claim that they are selling one console every minute. This is a great boost for Nintendo, as sales slowed right down during the year with the PS3 and Xbox 360 slowly catching up.

According to Pocket-Lint, they explain that families have now started to plan for the Christmas holidays, with the Wii looking to be one of the most popular gifts yet again, something that seems to happen each year.

We are not sure how sales of the Sony PS3 and the Xbox 360 are doing in the UK, but we know that sales in the U.S. have been healthy. John Lewis did say that their top-selling games were also for the Nintendo, Sports Resort, Mario Kart as well as Winter Sports 2009.

According to Punch Jump, sales of the Sony PlayStation 3 increased over the Thanksgiving weekend, this was to be expected due to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Amazon.com said that they sold 440,000 PS3 consoles during that weekend, due to massive discounts.

Microsoft also announced that sales of its Xbox 360 console have doubled during the Thanksgiving weekend. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all hope that sales continue in the run-up to the holiday season.

“catching up” is probably not the right term. “not falling as far behind” is better.

To catch up, the PS3 and XBox 360 would have to regularly be outselling the Wii. They aren’t except for a few specific situations.

  • XBOX = BRICK

Here’s a word to the wise: DON’T BUY A BRICK

The failure rate of XBOX360′s is over 50%! That means that you have a better than 50% chance of your machine dying on you for no reason. Feel free to search this information out for yourself.

I bought an Elite because they were supposedly more reliable. I thought I knew what I was getting into. My XBOX died within 12 months. Microsoft will fix or replace it for free — GREAT. So I sent it away. Three weeks later I got back a different (refurbished) console. That one died within three weeks of casual use. Sent that one away, and got one back. Same thing — within one month of casual use, it was a BRICK.

Tried once more, but ended up buying a PS3 out of frustration. Never been happier. PS3s are reliable, the game play is better, and I can watch Blu-Ray movies! (It’s the best BR player on the market, as the firmware is updated constantly via internet…) It also syncs to my computer’s media files effortlessly (something that was a pain on the XBOX), and I haven’t had any problems with file formats (again, tons of problems on the XBOX)

Best of all, it’s quiet. The XBOX sounds like a jet taking off — I literally had to turn up the sound to drown it out! The PS3 is quiet as a mouse.

I am never paying for online multiplayer again.

Stay away from the XBOX 360. Buy a PS3 instead.
