Zhu Zhu Pets Recall: Toxic rumors by Good Guide

Zhu Zhu Pets Recall: Toxic rumors by Good Guide

By: Daniel Chubb | December 6, 2009 | 10 Comments

If you’re a parent then you may already know how popular the Zhu Zhu Pets toy is, which has become the hottest toy for Christmas 2009. Today we are hearing that Good Guide.com has issued a review of the product, and claim that “dangerous contaminants” were found.

CBS has picked up on this story, and one reporter said that the danger is when children “touch their mouth” after touching a Zhu Zhu Pet Hamster. You can read the CBS report here, and the Good Guide report here, which reports the product, contains antimony.

The Good Guide says that antimony may “be linked to cancer, lung, and heart problems”. As a parent myself, and one that has a Zhu Zhu Pet “MR. Squiggles” under the Christmas tree, I am concerned. What should parents do that have bought a Zhu Zhu Pet?

The federal limit in the United States is reported to be 60 parts per million for antimony, and Good Guide are reporting Zhu Zhu Pets contain 103 parts per million in the nose, and 93 in the fur. They continue to say, “If ingested in high enough levels [it] can lead to cancer”.

Will There Be a Zhu Zhu Pet Recall? While writing this post we are not aware of any Zhu Zhu Pet recall, you may want to contact your local store where you bought a Zhu Zhu Pet. In the UK these toys are called Go Go Hamsters, again we have not heard of any recall in the UK either.

We will keep you updated about a possible recall of Zhu Zhu Pets or Go Go Hamsters, for more information head over to the articles on Good Guide, and CBS. Share your concerns and questions in the comments.

Hopefully the governement will issue a recall once it is deemed unsafe. Lets see that will be in Jan 2011? The issue here is that children are touching these toys for a very good part of the day and children have less skin layer protection and their brains can absorb twice as much toxins as an adult, even though they are just developing.

Harmful chemicals are just that and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Children must have less exposure then an adult or we set ourselves up for the future our children if we remain idle and just buy frivolously. Everyone should be lauding a consumer group that is being diligent for us. Let’s wait to see if the toy passes muster in independent tests.

Government agencies should be protecting consumers and checking (and rechecking) all products and if this is an issue, so should news agencies like CNN if they really were concerned. (nah, it’s just news) Other electronics and robotics can contain toxic chemicals, yes, but parents should know (and most do)limit exposure to all electronics.

Let’s get some facts into consumer hands, quickly please. It won’t be as quickly as they got the toy in people’s hands before Christmas though, I assure you.

The nose and fur have been found to have higher levels then allowed. If higher levels are found after release then the manufaturer says they had when lab inspected, then it can be leaking or emitting more toxins over time if not originally passed unsafely.

This is a new US company that may not have core values of ‘children’s safety first’ when releasing products. Those dollar signs will come before your safety unless they are MADE to have consumer saftey be a motto.

Consumer beware! China doesn’t care about it’s own kids let alone yours and who knows where products and it’s guts are actually made.

The company who released the report has affiliate links to amazon on others for buing the product. It the product is so bad, why are they linking to it and making money if you do buy it.

The whole thing was a PR stunt to drive traffic to their site so they could get in on the profits being made from this and the media just ate it up without checking any of the facts.

    Kitty,

The only thing i can say about you is rude and racist! How dare you accuse an ENTIRE culture of not caring about their children- SHAME ON YOU!

Dear Kitty, Quit dissing America. Quit dissing China. Where are you getting your facts. Let me guess form you phone while smoking and drinking your coffee.
Does not feel good being judged does it?

China, kills the owner of companies that cause harm to children. Does not matter if it is an accident, does not matter if the owner did not even do the deed.

It is not cool to judge others, but everyone does so what the hell. It really is not cool to judge a whole freaking country or company that you know knowing about. You sound like my father-in-law that is 75 years old. His way is the only way, he is very judgmental, racist, and angry.

    God Help Us.

    old and become so judgmental
