Spotify release on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii – New rumors

By: Alan Ng | November 30, 2009 | 7 Comments

Some potentially exciting news to give you now, as it has been rumored that Spotify will be making its debut on next-gen consoles in the future, thanks to a anonymous tipoff from a Spotify insider.

As reported from VG247, the insider has stated that the Spotify team has been working on the service for consoles ‘for some time’ and that we can expect to see it on next-gen consoles such as the Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii soon.

It makes sense to us that this will eventually happen, considering the successful launch on the iPhone, along with the recent launch of the Spotify Symbian app.

While this is still a rumor, personally speaking, I can see this coming to the PS3 for sure. As you may know, the Xbox 360 has just gained support for Last.FM which is a similar feature – so perhaps Spotify may end up being the PS3 alternative.

Will be excellent if this happens, though I’m still waiting for an iPhone update as the app badly needs updating.

    Really? What’s wrong with it?

I so hope it does come to the PS3. :)

Looking forward to this on PS3. Unlike the Xbox service, it’s also open to ALL PS3 owners, not just those that line Microsofts pockets with subscriptions every year…

Playlists aren’t straightforward to add to. You have to create the playlist first, then add to this as opposed to selecting an album and creating a new playlist based on this. You also can’t organise the play lists in any way and scrolling through them can be a pain, some way of categorising these would be great. On the main app I just search for the artist or album I want but as the Spotify app mainly uses downloaded offline songs this doesn’t work due to o2′s poor network connection.

The app is also missing functionality in the main app, such as latest releases, recommendations and biogs which would me nice. Another issue is it doesn’t work my iTrip unless you trick the iPhone. First you have to play a song through the iPod which engages the iTrip, then launch the Spotify app which stops the iPod playback but takes over the iTrip.

The other problems are more Apple related, such as no background play which I don’t know if this can be overcome due to Apple’s restrictions.

The Spotify iPhone app works well on a basic level but isn’t especially user friendly and is certainly a no frills approach.

Agree, have just upgraded to Gold and Last FM really isn’t worth it and not a patch on Spotify. I love my 360 for games but the PS3 is a great media player with iPlayer, net browser and Vid Zone. It’s way ahead of the 360 in these terms and Spotify would be a killer app.

If they release it for the PS3 (in the XMB, in the music section) then I would definitely upgrade to the premium.
