This next year or so should really begin to see the USB 3.0 standard being utilized, one company eager to utilize the technology is Buffalo, Buffalo have recently began shipping their first USB 3.0 compliant external hard drive.
The drive is called the Buffalo DriveStation HD-HXU3, the drive will be available in three different capacities, 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB, one surprising thing about the drives is the fact they only come with a 1 year warranty.
The drives boast some impressive specifications which include a transfer rate of up to 625MB per second (which equates to around 5 Gbits/sec), obviously this will only be available when connected to a USB 3.0 port, that said the drive is backward compatibly to USB 2.0.
If you do not have a USB 3.0 port on you PC/MAC Buffalo are offering USB 3.0 cards which plug into your motherboards PCI Express interface, there is also a ExpressCard-to-USB 3.0 adapter which will allow some laptops to utilize USB 3.0 devices.
It is unclear exactly when the drives will be available, however we should expect to pay around $199.99 for 1TB, $249.99 for 1.5TB and $399.99 for 2.0TB, for more information check out HotHardware.
