iPhone favored in Verizon Droid review

iPhone favored in Verizon Droid review

By: Peter Chubb | November 24, 2009 | 8 Comments

The Motorola Droid was released earlier in the month and since that then, has spent all that time in the spotlight, with Verizon saying that it could take the fight to AT&T and its iPhone. So with the Droid considered to be the biggest challenger to the iPhone, how well has this latest smartphone done.

Freep.com thought that they would revisit the Droid to see how well these past few weeks have been going for the handset since being released on the Verizon 3G wireless network. Having spent a week with the first handset to run on Google Android 2.0 OS, we now get to learn the good and the bad.

Some of the best features include the Turn-by-turn GPS, Web browsing and the Verizon network itself. The good thing with this review was the fact that not one call was dropped; also the browser loaded much quicker that Apple’s iPhone browser.

It is not all good news though; the flip-out, physical keyboard seems pointless in this day and age. The touchscreen keys are more than up to the job, unlike the keypad with its small and awkward to use keys.

The media features on the Droid are hard and clunky to use, making it very hard to organize your music. Freep concludes that that the Droid is a solid smartphone, but is no iPhone. Check out the latest Black Friday offers on the Droid handset.

How are the media features “hard and clunky to use?” I’m using plain old Windows Media Player to sort my music on my computer and simply transfering the files to the SD card via USB with no problems in sight. If you have the proper ID tags on the MP3s the phone sorts them just fine. And if you can’t find album art for your files? Guess what – there’s an app for that (search “album art”). Plus, the music widget makes it even easier to jump back and forth between songs. Did I mention you can play music while multitasking – something the iPhone can’t hold a candle to?

Hey Moose, iPhone with the iTunes way of storing and organizing music is far better than windows can do. And before you try to burn on the iPhone, it can play music while your playing games, emailing, texting, browsing etc. even while in a phone call you can play music and carry on a conversation at the same time. Not to sure who uses that feature, but it’s all possible on the IPHONE!

“iPhone can’t play music while multi-tasking”!?! WTF lol I listen to music on the nations number one selling phone all the time while multitasking. The iPod app on the iPhone plays no matter what until u turn the song off. I think you should re write your review. Lol

News flash! iPhone fanboys who obviously haven’t spent 10 minutes wth the Droid review it! And guess what – they make lots of factual errors favoring the iPhone!

    WTF!!!
The Droid is better than the iPhone, and I used to own an iPhone!
Plus, I’d much rather the the keyboard than the touchscreen keys!
The media is very simple to use! I can sort through my music just fine! And if you don’t have the proper file, there’s an app for that! And it’s free!
And with the Droid, you can have A LOT of task open, and even if you back out of them for something, it’ll be in the exact same spot when you go back to it! Plus, does the iPhone have a Notification bar!?
And the browser can open Multiple windows and that are QUICK AND EASY to jump between!

Not going to get into the multi-tasking fight, but if the iPhone wanted to kill all possibility of an “iPhone killer” existing, they should have gone to a decent network. AT&T (Cingular) is the worst network available (okay, perhaps not the worst — but damn close). Verizon or Sprint would have made the iPhone untouchable, but the greed and desire to bed with a big name like AT&T shot Apple in the foot. Dumb move. That combined with battery life led to some initial misgivings on the iPhone and whilst they’ve recovered nicely, they still have some room to grow. Best phone on the market? No doubt about it. Still beating everyone else handily? For the foreseeable future. But could it have been done easier? Yup. And once AT&T loses their exclusive, Verizon is going to crush them.

I have had a Blackberry (yeah, boring, I know) Curve with Verizon for 1 1/2 years in central Illinois. Driving all over the country….it rarely drops calls. I had my first business dropped call about a month ago at home….in 1 1/2 years…. true story…..now that’s a network. Everyone touts the Apps for iPhones (awesome phone, crappy network)….come on people…it’s a phone, not a toy. Grow up.
