Intel Core i9 (Gulftown) Processor: Detailed Review
By: Peter Chubb | November 24, 2009 | 1 CommentThe upcoming Intel i9 processor, codenamed Gulftown is still over a month away from a public showing, but that has not stopped the new chip undergoing a serious test and detailed review. Intel has said many great things about the i9, and is seems that most of what they said were true.
The i7 processor currently has four processors; the i9 has six cores, giving the platform a much-needed boost. The Gulftown platform comes into its own when launching multiple apps and programs.
When PCLab took the i9 away for tests, they found it to be 50 percent faster than a core i7 processor with the same clock speed. PCLab did point out that not all of its tests showed the speed increases that Intel advertised, there were a number of factors that attributed to those poor results.
One of those reasons is because the memory performance is not as high as hoped. The Intel Core i9 is due for release in the first part of 2010, maybe as early as January. Expect to see them in high-end systems, but expect to pay a premium for the new processor.
