Paid PSN Subscriptions: Sony’s plans for PS3 in 2010

Back on May 20th of this year, we wrote about a PSN subscription fee, and asked PS3 owners if they would pay for the PlayStation Network. We had some interesting comments, which you can read here.

Some users hit the nail on the head when saying they might offer additional services for an additional cost, because this is the news we are hearing a few months on in November. Sony is making plans for paid PSN subscriptions in 2010, and following on from Hirai’s announcement we thought we should revisit paid PSN subscriptions.

A few days ago, Kaz Hirai confirmed there will be a premium level added on top of PS3 and PSP online services. It will stay free to play online, which is what all PS3 users love about PSN.

Gamespot’s article talks about Sony’s revenue from PSN, and shows that it’s on the rise. Sony’s current fiscal year should reach $563 million from PSN; this expectation is for the end of March 2010.

Detailed plans for PSN subscriptions have not been released, but current free services on PSN include Netflix video streaming, Facebook integration, and online play. Some of these services are paid for with a Gold membership on Xbox Live.

If Sony launched new services that you need to pay for, would you be happy to do that? What ideas do you have for PSN Subscriptions? Let us know in the comments.

As long as they don’t make anything that is currently free paid for I really won’t mind. If whatever new service they offer seems worth it I will pay for it.

It may be some kind of cloud computing game rental service for all we know, or a Netflix style subscription option on the Video Store.

People shouldn’t jump the gun and be against the idea without knowing what it is first. They already have the likes of Qore, and your PSN experience isn’t degraded by not paying for it. That is why the idea is completely different to the Live Gold sub – you should not be calling it a PSN Subscription, the PSN will remain free, this is a plan for more premium services to be made available on PSN.

Let’s face it more revenue options = improved services, or services that wouldn’t have otherwise been possible.

I guess I’m suspicious of this like some people, but as long as most stuff is free, it’d be cool. Even if it’s not all free, I guess there aren’t going to be a lot of other options.

As long as they don’t start charging to simply play games online, then I am fine. If there are some new features that they are adding to a premium service, then at least we will have a choice whether to get it or not. If they do decide to go the M$ route, then I will simply cut back on my micro purchases and DLC. I won’t be charged twice to get a new bowling ball for HVB, a movie download, or a new Character for some other game.

i wouldnt mind paying for additional content. Theyve stated already that anything we get now for free will remain free, like playing online. so thats good news. although i wonder what they could add that would require a sub fee?

I don’t mind if there is a charge, so long as there is some good stuff available and doesn’t go past 5pounds per month.

If you have to pay for something on psn then i probably wont pay for it because psn being free and online being free is what makes ps3 so much better than xbox. I think if u pay 400-500 dollars for a system then u shouldnt have to pay for things like that.

  7. mike says:

everything sounds good just as long as the online play stays free
