Verizon: Would iPhone users move to Droid for it?

Verizon: Would iPhone users move to Droid for it?

By: Daniel Chubb | November 22, 2009 | 16 Comments

We know some iPhone users have been upset a little in the past with AT&T, and some phone users that really want an iPhone, are not buying because they want a Verizon iPhone. So what does this type of buyer do?

One Smartphone that’s had great reviews is the Droid, and this phone is on the Verizon Wireless network. The question we have; would an iPhone user move from the iPhone to Droid for the Verizon network?

While the Droid is a nice phone, it’s not an iPhone. One word “Apps” and you might as well forget the Droid when comparing it to the iPhone for applications. We have seen many articles comparing the Droid to the iPhone, but could a dedicated Apple buyer, really jump ship for Verizon?

Over on iphonestalk.com, they have written a post about “an iPhone users plea for peace”. Have a read and let us know what you think about the iPhone vs. Droid debate. It’s our opinion that nearly every phone will continue to be compared to the iPhone for the foreseeable future, and some phones will be more desirable thanks to Verizon.

Apple needs to achieve one bigger goal with the iPhone, get a new iPhone on the Verizon network. If you’re an iPhone user, let us know if you would buy another phone for Verizon Wireless.

I had the I phone for a year and a half. I absoloutly hated at&t but I loved the I phone. I couldn’t imagine any phone that would come close to the I phone until I tried the droid. I tried the droid for fifteen days and I was sold. Great network which of course is verizon and a great phone overall. Bye bye at&t. And hello droid.

I am a software engineer. I write custom software apps for the web, desktop, and Android. I love Android, its easy, fast, and has a constantly growing community. The OS is still new compared to the iPhone, but the OS has many features that the iPhone does not (like Widgets, more customization capabilities and simultaneous apps, etc). With Google backing it I foresee the potential for it to pass up the iPhone within the next few years in # of users. I currently own a Motorola Droid and I will be getting a HTC Dragon for me and my girlfriend when it comes out (gotta love their sense ui, the larger touchscreen and the 1 ghz processor). :-)

I had 5 lines at Verizon (now there’s 4). One of them WAS mine, I now have the iPhone. I live in NJ and AT&T’s service is great…..3G and NO dropped calls. I admit I have not traveled out of the NY, NJ, PA and Washington, DC area. I found AT&T’s customer service to be just as good as Verizon I specifically like the fact if I have a problem, I can go into the local AT&T store and get personal help; like Verizon. The staff at the store are more than willing to help. My salesman even gave me his cell number and said I can call on his off days if I have any issies……that’s dedication! I did try the Droid and HTC. I found the user face was no where near the iPhone, specifically the touch part. I also was turned off by the “Darth Vadar” look…….sorry, I’m not a Star Wars fan. The HTC had a smaller screen than the Moto Droid which created a real estate problem on the screen…..everything is crammed into a very small space. I would be more than willing to return to Verizon if they get something similar to the iPhone.

I’m more leaning towards the Palm Pre than an Android. I have an iPhone 3G and hate AT&T. I hated them so much I broke my contract from my first gen iPhone to switch to another carrier. Unfortunately, the app store brought me back. Now I’m considering switching again.

I had 2G than 3G iphone. Moved to the Droid – both have great features and some negatives – i think the Droid is a better device when looking at the overall package, including being on the Verizon Network. I moved up to the droid and think I will be staying.

Verizon has better customer service and a better network, but not even one phone that syncs with our Apple computers. If another brand had a computer-phone (=iPhone-style) that has equal functionality to an iPhone and was fully compatible with Apple computers….no problem. Apple has not been particularly nice to its users, but offers a super product line and good support. The loyalty is not so much to the company as to the products.

Personally speaking I Most likely wouldn’t switch back to Verizon for the forseeable future, because before I became an AT&T customer on April 28 of this year I had numerous bad experiences with Verizon. I called Verizon on April 28 because I was having problems with my third blackberry storm, the first of which I had already returned & exchanged for a curve that I truly didn’t like at all. Their solution was to sell me an lg dare for about $500.00 & on top of that give me a mail in rebate that I might not even qualify for. I obviously didn’t take their offer,& immeadetly
switched to AT&T to get an iPhone 3g. 7 weeks after I got the 3g the 3gs was released,to be honest my 16gb white 3g was filling up fast with music
so I got a 32gb white 3gs which I’m currently using. I know that many people seem to have problems with at&t’s network, but honestly I haven’t had any truly bad problems,& whatever minor problems whether network related or just customer service related they have been more than helpful,& also I live in NJ.

Arif, or should I say Verizon employee?
You are so messed up with your fake statements. I have 6 friends and my self all have tried the Droid.
Its 1. not user friendly, 2. big/heavy, 3. camera sucks 4. apps suck and the verizon networks commercials are under investigation and a lawsuit for misleading the public.
    Get Real. Droid Doesn’t.

Even if another device were better in some ways than the iPhone, I have no motivation to switch carriers at this time. I adore my iPhone, and I have not seen any more problems with AT&T’s coverage than I had with Verizon, my carrier for many years. For consumer friendliness, Verizon is the greediest, most callous phone company there is. I have had several Motorola phones and none of them were good quality after the original StarTac. Motorola’s customer support stinks, whereas Apple’s is beyond fabulous, so I certainly wouldn’t get a Droid. There may be an Android phone someday that surpasses the iPhone, and I would certainly entertain purchasing a different brand, but not from Verizon. If Verizon gets the iPhone, they are still not getting my business.

Greg- take it from me…avoid the palm pre. I’ve had 1 for 2 weeks…can’t stand it on multiple levels:
    a) Calendar – can’t send a calendar invite to anyone
    b) Phone – answer and hanging up on calls cumbersome at best
    c) Text messaging separate from one inbox. A lot of other steps required including looking up frequently called or texted people. Also, there is no notification sound for receipt of text message….really…no…really.

it looks sexy on the shelf…but after the date…you’ll wish you stayed home. Hope I saved you some time. I’m looking at Droid and switching from Sprint (hate their customer service) to Verizon. I’d get the IPhone but coverage for ATT is no good in my area. I for one wish IPhone was available on Verizon. I’d move 5 lines that day.

I own an iPhone 3g and have been with at&t for the last 3 years. i have had experience with verizon, t-mobile, and sprint as well. (sprint being the absolute worse, from customer service to dropped calls to network coverage, it is beyond me why anyone would continue to use their service.)

in the last 6 years i have lived in oregon, colorado, virginia and new mexico. i have done extensive traveling both road and plane during this time, so i bring with my opinion some experience, that say, those who have just lived in heavily populated areas (new england) and not done much traveling can offer.

first i would start off by making a blanket statement that most carriers are going to cover most major cities fairly well and so coverage issues for those people who merely stay in one city and dont do much traveling for work or pleasure will not be affected one way or the other if verizon was to get a version of the iPhone.

however, that being said, if verizon was to get a version of the iPhone, i would be one of the first at&t customers to switch over. Here are just some recent examples from the past two weeks as to why.

last week i went on a ski trip for the weekend with a couple of buddies. i was not able to recieve ANY coverage at the cabin we stayed at, while one of my buddies on the verizon network had FULL bars. (can you hear me know?) very frustrating to have to ask if i could borrow his cell phone to call my wife.

My wife has repeated problems while in the operating room with her cell phone. no service while others on the verizon network (you guessed it) have full bars.

i do understand that verizon's coverage may not include access to the internet in these areas that i have mentioned in my examples due to lack of 3G coverage, but the point of these two examples is that when all i want to do is to perform the very BASIC function of a cell phone, making a call, i can't on the at&t network. those on the verizon network can. (can you hear me know?)

  • Jacob Robért

I have tons of examples when traveling by road or plane but i think these two simple examples help to get my point across. my point being, that if Verizon were to get an amazing phone like the iPhone, there is no doubt in my mind that those of us who travel for business or pleasure and have felt the frustration of being the one who has no coverage, whether in a building or on the road, would switch over in a heartbeat.

the ONLY thing that keeps me at at&t is the iPhone. the amazing simplicity of use and yet the infinite possibilities in app solutions for whatever you need (there's an app for just about anything), the only reason why the droid MAY surpass iPhone in sales would be because of the network and NOT the phone itself and even with that, apple would have to just stop at the 3GS and produce nothing further. i mean do the droid users think that the 3GS is the final phone that apple will produce? thats as good as it's going to get?? and one other assumptoin i would add is that droid users who would tell you that they have a superior phone to the iPhone have never actually owned an iPhone for any significant length of time. If Verizon would realize this, i fear the scales of market share would tip heavily in their favor.

Jim, I'm with you… AT&T lost me 10 years ago after a "northeast package" promotion was "slammed" onto my plan, vs. the eastern region plan. $200 in roaming charges – just in SC and FL in one week. "But your contract that I SIGNED said: Eastern Region".
"Yes sir, but the promotional coupon the salesman submitted ON YOUR BEHALF for a $50 rebate changed that." That's illegal… and it mattered not.
Having been on Sprint previously – good where it worked – and no coverage where it didn't, the Sanyo phones were tough and excellent.
Next, I tried Nextel. Not bad, but no coverage in the hinterlands either.
A change in business brought me to Verizon, and it's really a matter of finding a local dealer who works for YOU. Wireless Zone in Dover, NH is my choice – and they will steer me towards the package and equipment that works for me. "Rich, I need a phone that can take a good drop-kick." So far that's been more stripper-model Motorola models than anything else, but I make PHONE CALLS with this, and send some text messages.
That said, as a mac-user, I'd have 10 apps to use on a iPhone, that could possibly get me to up to a data plan. 'Til then, I'll continue to listen to all of the Storm/Droid/Pre users rant about their crap experiences.

    Any issue with battery life?
