Modern Warfare 2 Freezing: Problems and new complaints

i got the yellow light of death in the middle of a team deathmatch game and yes i have the older model which now will be replaced with a new one fml

My PS3 has been freezing up after online and offline matches on Modern Warfare 2. It has done this every time I have played the game, a total of 6 times now.
I have the larger 80gig PS3, however, its less than a year old.

I’d hardly call that “isolated” as most of the PS3′s out there are the “original big” PS3′s. It’ll be a cold day in hell before 25+ million units is isolated.

That one member is an idiot. He’s implying that older big PS3′s are using older or slower components & therefore have to be pushed harder to play the game. That’s obviously complete rubbish & spec wise, all PS3′s are pretty much identical. The newer ones use a smaller die size & probably run a little cooler for it, but the hardware itself doesn’t work any easier or harder because of this. The only problem I can see is that the original 60GB’s used a large die size & therefore get hotter. This in the long term could cause problems, but to say that all 25+ million big PS3′s are going to die soon is pretty far fetched to say the least.

My first PS3(20gig) got the ylod from playing too much RE5 last May. I observed that when i play COD4, the console doesn’t read the disc often unlike RE5′s constant disc spinning. The PS3 automatically shuts off by itself for two weeks after 3hours of RE5 each time….but when I play COD4, there wasn’t any freezes or auto shut off. And then finally one day, my PS3 got the ylod with RE5 game still inside!
I’m on my second PS3 now and I wish I can install MW2 because i get constant freezes again…and I know either the motherboard is warping, cooling fan is failing or the power supply too. If i ever get the ylod again…well,bye bye phat PS3!Fwack refurfished consoles! I may have to buy the new slim PS3.

I don’t want to scaremonger but i’ve two friends whose PS3′s have suffered YLOD whilst playing MW2… Coincidence? It does appear that there’s a connection… I only hope that if there is then it becomes apparent and something is done about it so that people who do need a refurb/replacement don’t have to pay.

I’ve had occasional freezing on MW2, nothing major but then again I don’t recall ever having freeezing issues with any other game. I do get an odd freeze up when browsing sometimes though but I expected that was fairly normal.

I have a slim PS3 and it’s frozen mid-game multiplayer several times. I was just playing single player (during the ice\submarine level); after a big predator explosion, the game froze. I have the new Slim model 120GB!

ps3,switch it on. start up modern warfare 2 and i press multiplayer on the main menu and the screen goes balck and just stays like that, the only solution is to switch it off. when i restart it and do everything again it goes upto where im in a lobby waiting for the game to begin and it freezes as its about to launch (and again the only thing that i can do is switch it off). from then on it allows me to play 1 full game max. it either freezes in the middle of a game or when the map is loading.

I have the older 60gb PS3. I’ve already had to replace the blu-ray drive once. Now this MW2 keeps freezing up. I can here the HD working, but then all of a sudden crashes. However, usually in the game the level will glitch out, then it freezes. So YES I totally think that this game is making peoples PS3′s crash, not the other way around. I think that Infinity Ward. Activision, and other Partners of MW2 should be responsible for any damages to our systems.

Its really frustrating, the game is good, but it freezes every time after 30 minutes or so. Is this the publishers way of telling us to do something else?

older 40 gig ps3 freezes at launch and at end of match if lucky enough to get into game. Also will freeze in campaogn mode at end of a board. Sometimes can play for an hour before freezing in multiplayer, after that it won’t even read disc until total shutdown ( switch on the back ).

I have experienced similar problems. My PS3 froze while playing the cod mw2 campaign. It has never frozen before. I had to restart the console, but when i did it would not detect the disc. I restored the system and it pick up the disc, but when trying to load it an error code 80010514 appeared. Now the console either does not detect a disc, detects but displays error code, or loads fine and freezes very quickly. It can’t be just coincedence that these symtoms are appearing after cod mw2?

I have the PS3 Slim(As a result of my 60Gb YLOD). And I also have the freezing issue. Will have to restart the console many times. This is ridiculous! To wait and pay for a product and have to deal with this shit! If this issue is not resolved this will be the last COD/ Infinity Ward game I purchase!

From the Servers going down the 2nd day of release and now this.

This has happen to me also only 4 times in the past 2 weeks but i have also had trouble using my mic and controller as either willl coneect even via cord but then after 5 min it works again and when i play online i can here the disc spinging and suddenly stopping over and over and this is with a 3 month old slim!!!!

My 250Gb ps3 slim keeps freezing in multi player I am also having problems getting the controllers to connect. The lag at times is appalling even though I have a wired up system. I am also starting to get fed up with campers and noob tubes it is still a great game.

MW2 won’t even open on my Slim PS3. When I put the disc in the screen goes black when it would normally load. I haven’t been able to play for at least 5 days… Any insights?

I have the ps3 slim 120gb and CODMW2 freezes and crashes my system nothing will work and the controller will not respond.I also have trouble syncing my controller at times. My ps3 is only 3 weeks old. Is it possible that the CODMW2 discs have some sort of virus or something on them as since playing this game my other games and dvds have started to be affected and have started freezing aswell.

It’s not just ps3. My xbox 360 freezes during online gameplay. I’ve had it for about a week and it just started doing this a couple days ago. Sometimes (very few) it plays. Most of the time it craps out after 5 minutes of team deathmatch.

OK I GOT my PS3 TO FORMAT FULLY AND IT STARTS WORKING NO FREEZING.. BUT THAN I POP IN MY CALL OF DUTY 4 MODERN WARFARE 2 AND I GOTTA UPDATE IT AND RIGHT AFTER FREEZING MY SYSTEM UP!!!! ITS THE STUPID UPDATE FROM COD MW2 WTF I BOUGHT THIS FOR 60 AND I CANT EVEN PLAY!

I just bought the PS3 slimline. My first console pf any kind.
I have MW2 my first game of any kind. yes i have been living under a rock. I played the game through to the frogman checkpoint the second time I had it on, then it froze. It would boot up to the push start screen and hang there after awhile it would play the “Makarov” synopsis and go back to the push start screen. And nothing. Then the Makarov scene again, and again and again. Restarting didn’t work nothing worked. I thought I had a defective disc. I returned it to Best Buy and got a new one. Still nothing. I took the ps3 back and got a new one, no questions asked-Best Buy rocks. Hooked it up and played for a few hours. Now it is doing THE EXACT SAME THING. I am pissed. You guys seem knowledgeable so I will accept the game itself is F’d. I will not use it and get a refund on it. Too bad the game is really cool.
Any suggestions for similar games that actually work without destroying the system?

My 2 and a half year old 60GB packed up last nite during MW2.
It had been freezing alot since i first played the game.
After abit of research it seems that MW2 is effecting older models.
I dunno whether to get it repaired or get a new one.
I’d love to keep it as it has backwards compatibility and memory card slots which I use regularly.

I have an ‘older’ 80 gig large machine, that’s already been replaced once due to blu-ray drive failure. Now with this ‘refurbed’ machine, when I play MW2 it gets to the final screen of the game (Multiplayer) and freezes up. Hardware restart is the only way to unfreeze. Oh, and then it won’t read the disc. So you have to shut it off, eject the disc and start all over. To play 1 more round. Something is up.

When I try to load up multiplayer online on mw2, i get a box that says Online Status, and then there are several lines under it with Fetching Playlists…and the sort. It stays for ever and I can never get past that. Why is this?

I’m on a college campus, but it worked when I first got the game. Then I took my ps3 home for Thanksgiving, it worked fine, and now that I’m back on campus it doesn’t want to load. Please help

My original 60Gb (Now 120Gb) PS3, with the memory slots, freezes during or mainly at the end of an online MW2 game.
No other games do this including FIFA series and MW1(COD 4)

I was playing mw2 and I got the ylod in multiplayer I have the old 60gb and now mw2 is stuck in it as well. I now use me ps3 as a paper weight!

I’ve got the same issues, Modern warfare 2 freezes every 5 minutes on multiplayer. I’ve got the old 60GB version of the PS3. I’ve got issues too with loading some of the objectives in the game and the interface of the heartbeat sensor.

My PS3 has frozen twice in the last two days (hence my appearance on this article), and probably four times on MW2 (including the last two times). If there is an error on the MW2 disc causing YLOD, then I am kind of afraid it is doing damage to my hardware over time. How can we find out for sure what’s wrong with our systems, games, or a solution?

Look-no mater how you slice it Sony are and will be aware of these problems,and they will know the cause!!
Whoever is at fault needs to get is sorted ASAP or face a marketing disaster.

I just started having these issues today while playing CoD MW2… After either one or two matches, I have to restart because it’s freezing up. I believe there must be something either with the disk or the software that I needed to download for it to play. This is no coincidence. My other games play just fine. Sony needs to come up with something to fix this quick. Its bad when people are threatening to go to an even worse game system (XBOX) from a little software glitch.

…yea i just strated getting this problem as well !! while playing MW2 my ps3 frezze , then i have to manually turn it off from the back, wich i hate doing by the way !

The exact same thing is happening with the Xbox. Sony has probably less problems with their system, but this has nothing to do with it. my 60 and 120 gig Xboxes freeze after entering an online match. i ahve to reboot the xbox, turn off the connection and restart everything to even get to the Multiplayer menu. It will say finding players and freeze. it will continue for a little and freeze and shut my xbox off. THE DISK IS GIVING THE HARDRIVE CORRUPTED DATA.

if something happends to our systems ( ps3/xbox ) bc of this game shouldnt infinity be responsable for it??? afterall they decing the game with corrupt data!! just my opinion!!

my mate bought mw2 over to play on my 2 day slim ps3, we started playing online and it was all going fine then the game ended and we had to find a new host so we did and then when loading it froze we restarted again, and again
now when we go to the mw2 menu it comes up with registration of trophy room could not be complete

I had the same problem as you on call of duty, and I found the solution given your lens is worn, it is not off, it can play other games but made in recent games, which requires all the power of your lens, the lens can no longer read it right then you will have to change your lens or buy a new Playstation 3

My PS3 60GB has also had the problem of freezing. It happens after a Multiplayer match online, when the table of stats appear after the game winning kill cam. During the game before it froze, the script voices that say about ‘UAV’s and others were not heard. Is that a glitch that tells you its about to freeze? None of my other games have frozen, and it only started to happen last week.

Same thing. 60 gig PS3, older model, playing COD4 MW2, game freezes at end of a muliplayer match and I have to manually shut down. This happened after I had been playing the game for a few weeks. Now, it happens all the time, and on any ohter game. Whenever I play a game, it will work fine until I end a match or level, whenever the PS3 has to load, it will freeze up on me, and shutdown. This game killed my ps3 and now I can’t play anything.

Everytime i try and quit a game it beeps 3 times, and the screen blanks out, like there is no input from the PS3.Does anyone know if this is a problem with the lense? or anything else?

My PS3 has never corrupted while playing MW2.
But it has corrupted once or twice on LBP, Many times on Assassin’s Creed and loads of times on Stuntman: Ignition.

I have also recently suffered I believe due to MW2. I had my PS3 for a year and a half with no problems. Then just before Christmas 2009 I suddenly stopped reading all discs, game disks, dvd’s, cd’s & blueray’s. Phoned Sony support, they had me reformat the hard drive and restore my backup. That didnt work so they said that the laser readers needed to be replaced and even though the system is out of warrenty they would do the work for free. The system was picked up by a courier on the 31st December and I just got it back last Monday (11th Jan). The system is working again, but MW2 is freezing, most frequently in online multiplayer mode, but it has happened in campaign mode as well. I will be playing some other games this weekend to test whether it is only happening in MW2 or if the problem is more wide spread.

Yes, exactly the same problem I’m having. I have an original ‘big’ PS3. Sometimes the PS3 doesn’t even read the disc after I restart it. Idk what is wrong with it. Only MW2 makes it do this.

The last few dayes my ps3 frozen up many times, ( before the game starts, a few times in the middle of a game my screen went all vague and then froze up, and also at the end of games)

Every time when I start my recovery menu, and I choose option 3. it allways says there are files damaged and that the system will restore it. but its just every time it says there are files damaged.

My PS3 Slim with MW2 freezes about 2-3 times a day. Usually after exiting a (team death match) multi player lobby. This sucks. Maybe I should switch to a Xbox 360.

modern warfare 2 keeps freezin on me too. i just phoned sony and have been told to delete the utility data for mw2 and then re install it no more problems.

Here is the fix they list for this issue:

This may be caused by a faulty game disc, or problems with the PlayStation 3. Check the disc for abrasions, scratches, and dust.

Ensure the PlayStation 3 is in a cool, well ventilated place.
Try deleting the game data. Go into the XMB menu. This is the menu that you see when you turn on your PS3. Select Game / Game Data Utility. Select the game and press the triangle button. Select Delete and then press the X button to confirm. Once this is done, reinsert the game disc in the drive. You will need to install the game data to the PS3 again. This should not affect your saved game as it is stored in a different folder.
Try the game on another PlayStation 3.
If none of the above resolves the issue then this may indicate a problem with your Playstation 3 and you will need to contact Playstation Consumer/Technical support at (1-800-345-SONY).
Additional PS3 troubleshooting suggestions can be found at Sony’s support site.

same here. i have the 80 gb ps3 that came with motorstorm. i played mw2 a while, now every time i finish a spec ops it freeze and my ps3 give s me an error 80010514. then i have to completely shut it off for 5 min before i can reopen it, if not it doesn t read bluray/cd/dvd anymore.

Hi my PS3 slim 120gb just started to freeze today i was playing it in the morning for like 2 hours and i went of to go and get breakfast and went back on to the ps3 about 2 hours later and i tryed to go to online play on COD MW2 and it just froze and i was like WTF.. i then turned it off and tryed to do it again but same thing happened. i then waited like 4-5 hours and went back on but same thing happened..

My 60 gig froze while I was playing single player MW2. I was able to turn it off fine, and the PS3 is booting up fine. The problem is I can’t get it to read any discs. I load the discs in and they sound like they spin slowly, but not very quickly. The loading icon starts moving on the upper right hand corner, but it never picks up the disc. I’ve tried this with PS3 games, CDs, DVDs, and PS2 games, still nothing.

I have read most of the comments here and on other sites and the common theme is the game. It does not seem to matter if your Playstation is old or new they are both being affected by MW2.

Sony needs to address this issue ASAP before more systems go down in flames.

Hey victor , um i dont think that has anything to do with this , ive had the same problem before , it (ps3) dnt read anything , its a lens error , so i cleared the data off my ps3 and it worked , or if u dont want to delete your data , u can take ur ps3 to a gaming shop and get fixed for £100

I just had this happen to me after installing the newest update… Today is the 17th of Feb 2010.

Just got the same thing happening with MW2 on the 360. Installed an update and wham, the game freezes in multiplayer every time I aim at someone. How annoying. I only bought the console for this game, now I can't even do that.

yeah i just picked up a copy of MW2 today and after every multiplayer match or spec ops match it freezes and i have to turn off the ps3 with the switch in the back and also when i was playing the one round i got to play before it always freezes i noticed that some of the ladders in the maps were invisible and i could only see there shadow and then in spec ops i tryed sniper fi and went to swap my desert eagle for a machine gun and that was also invisible…..im returning it back to gamestop tomorrow and then im staying away from that game

I have the new 230 or 240 gb ps3 and its less that 2 months and old and today all the sudden mw2 will not play. it freezes at random points mid game start and finish… total lockdown i just switched from 360 to ps3 because of the issues with them but now im not so sure that it was the right choice

sounds like i'm having the same problem everyone else is. sony sent me some stuff to try but it did'nt work. after all that $$ i spent on this thing and i have'nt even had it three years yet. i may not be a sony guy much longer.

I have the slim and the same problem happens as well. At the end of a multiplayer match in MW2 the game freezes before going back to the lobby.

i have the new slim ps3 i have had for about 4 months. last week i was playing mw2 worked fine until somehow my ps3 cracked the game. i got a new copy today but wenever i die in story mode or at the end of a online game it will freeze and i have to turn the ps3 off so what is ment to be the problem the ps3 or the game?

I have the slim 120gb. Mw2 freezes after one match everytime and sometimes just before the match is about to launch. It won’t even let me play campaign. I started having the problem on the older ps3 and bought a new one and have the exact same problem.. I have a 40G ps3 and it has been running fine untill last week. It used to freez sometimes during MW2 online play….but now it freezes everytime I try to play MW2 online….specially at the launch screen. I also notice that some of the BG sounds stop working during the game. I can only hear gunshots and explosions and no voice..e.g "reloading or "target down" etc. I think if anything sony should replace consols for people just like xbox did.

I have a new 120g slim PS3 that isn't even 2 months old and I've been experiencing freezing after matches as well. After it happened 3 games in a row I turned off my PS3 for a while and googled the symptoms and found all of this out. Now I'm scared to play MW2 for the sake of my PS3. It doesn't happen with any other games and I have a triple fan cooling pad under my PS3 that practically makes the system ice cold so I know heating isn't the problem. Infinity Ward needs to come out with a new patch soon before people give up on their products.

i have the "old" 60 gig ps3 and i just started getting this problem a few days ago, it happened twice on saturday a few hours between each incident but now it happens for every online match (thats all i play so i dunno if it happens during other aspects of the game). same problem though, freezes either when loading a map or after a match during the score report. and during the game i also dont hear the game voices or anything, just gunshots.

This problem has happened to both my big old ps3, and my new slim one. With the old one, it started freezing during multiplayer play, and eventually got to the point where it wouldn't read that game at all. Went and got a brand new game, still wouldn't read it. Could read other games tho.

Currently using a new slim ps3. It's freezing again. Sony and Activision just keep referring me to each other to deal with it. I keep hearing that it's "highly unlikely" that there's just something this game is doing to the ps3. For the heck of it, went and bought a brand new game…..same thing is happening.

i have a fat 40gb ps3 and it does this on mw2, mw1 and world at war i never had problems with the frezzing insident until infinity ward made the new stimulous packages and i dont know if that has anything to do with it but im PISSED help me out

I have an original 20 gig PS3 (yeah the "fat one"). I haven't bought the map pack yet, but since the update I've had freezing problems. I turn it on and everything connects just fine. I get logged in, and I try to enter a game. It takes a little longer than usual to connect me to a lobby, but I think my lack of the new map pack accounts for that. As soon as I connect to a lobby, it freezes on the launch screen, or I play through a round and it freezes immediately after it ends.

I really hope this is just a temporary server error or something, because I like my backwards compatibility and I don't particularly want to buy a new PS3.

this makes a lot of sence. I to havent bought the map packs yet and ever since the MW2 Resurgence Pack (6/3/2010) was released on Xbox360 MW2 freezes after every 3rd or 4th match on my 20gig PS3. This just started happening and I have been playing this game for months now so I think it has something to do with the infinity ward servers.
Other games seem to work fine. Army of two 2 and old ratchet and clank games. I have also hooked up fans to try and cool overheating but thats not it. I say servers

I think it has something to do with the map pack updates. I dont have either of them but since the resergence pack (6/3/2010) my ps3 has been freezing after two or three matches during the stat screen after a multiplayer game. I feel its the Infinity Ward servers.
My other games seem to play fine even old ps2 games

i have had too consoles slim ps3 less then a year this mw2 freezes evry time on both consoles so im convinced its a combo deal every other game worksfine big graphic games do the same happento me with lost took game back three times all three froze in the same spot but mw2 def the worst

Which foo lmade this grame so crap,?game of the year ,crap.did you guys play this game on all levels,i think not, cause the crap that is in this game is unmissable.here`s some–shooting people point blank and missing,are they those stupid juganaughts,no. a rocket launcher that has a sight, but goes anywhere but where you point it.soldiers that you can`t kill with the weapons you have [rockets,high powerd rifels ] ,throwing a grenade into a room or small place,only to find the man standing in the smoke still alive,wtf is that.yet another game from you people that can`t be finished,you will never catch me out again,what a ripoff,$100 for crap.

just got a new ps3 slim after i got the yellow light of death on my old 80g. Brand new 360g slim version insltalled he game went online played a dame and first time frooze right off the bat on the end of match play. Whats going on with this game. And no game is mint and works fine on buddies system.

i was playing mw2 and i keeped on dying in campaign(veterian mode) and than it froze and when i restarted my ps3 it didnt even read the disc

my PS3 is less than a year old too and its the newer ''slim version. Mine started freezing at the end of playing a multi-player game on the final scores screen, or sometimes actually during a game… bin happening around 10 days now… What should I do guys? I cant just keep turning it off after 1 game, then leaving it for a while just to turn it back on for 1 game… I just dont know what im supposed to do, any ideas would help greatly. Cheers

We have a new PS3 slim and it freezes after or during an online or offline CODMW2 game. The system is updated with the Version 3.55. We have only had our PS3 for 2 months. Super frustrating…any advice on how to make it work right?

PS3 Slimline i got mw2 for christmas and been playing for weeks, now when i click multiplayer the screen goes black.

i have the ps3 slim 120 gig. My MW2 freezes on everything i try to do, story mode, online, multiplayer everything freezes, and there are no scratches at all. Must be the Affect of Infinity Ward falling apart. ive had no affects to my ps3 though, but i do miss MW2 very much if anyone finds a way to fix the error pleasse email me at airbudjr@yahoo.com. IT would be much appreciated.
