Sony PS3 v3.10 Update: Do you have any problems?

Sony PS3 v3.10 Update: Do you have any problems?

By: Alan Ng | November 19, 2009 | 80 Comments

If you didnt know by now, the Playstation 3 has just been updated to firmware version 3.10, adding features in the way of XMB Facebook support, Tweaked Friends lists, European Video Store and much more.

Considering the long list of problems that occured for some of our readers in firmware update 3.01, we would like to know if anyone is experiencing any problems after the update.

We ask this, as we have had requests from our readers asking if the new update has solved the disc reading errors that a lot of you were reporting after 3.01, so how is everything looking for you?

As far as we know, this is still an isolated case which is only affecting a few of you, but we still thought we’d ask you for your feedback following the new update.

Leave us a comment below if you have noticed any problems after installing the new update.

I am haveing some problems with the new 3.10 update: the BBC Iplayer link has gone, the console will not find any external divices such as my ps3 compatible external hard drive, and mp3 player which was fine befor 3.10 also typing comments on facebook through the ps3 only works some times. a fiew mins ago i turn on my ps3 and the only thing that was there was the interactive background NO icons, i waited a fiew mins and then it came back but thats never happend before. saying that the update has got some nice features that are very good. thanks for reading

  • Krone713

Sooooo, I updated and no problems yet, but where is the facebook integration it was talking about?

  • craig

Mine wont play discs. When it does 1 out of ten times. I get one game of Modern Warfare2 and it freezes on the stats page at the end of multiplayer. It never did this until last night when I updated. After a hard reset it wont even show the disc icon. I hate sony with their stupid required updates. Why do I need facebook and photo album BS on my gaming system?? If anyone else is having problems please post so maybe sony will fix this crap.

  • Karl

My son just downloaded 3.01 update on Sony PS3 slim now it is inoperable. He cannot get a picture at all. I read where there were issues with this update. It is still under manufacturers warranty and could be shipped back for a new one. Anyone else have this problem? Is there any kind of fix or just send it back? This is frustrating since it is only 2 weeks old and ran perfect before he did this. It is a SATA drive (120 GB 5400 rpm) so maybe replacing this would possibly get the system back in working order? I am for sending it back since it is under warranty. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

  • Ted

i am having the same problems as craig. i updated to 3.10 last night and today the ps3′s drive sounds funny now. it will load the game(any) but i cant get it to play. i try to quit the game and it seems to freeze for 10 minutes while it figures out what to do or bring up a blank screen and do nothing. everything was fine before the update, please fix it soon

  • michaelT

YER HAD THIS VERY PROBLEM RIGHT NOW…I SWITCHED IT OFF ABOUT 4 TIMES…AND THEN I CONNECTED THEM WITH THE CONTROLLERS AND RANDOMLY IT STARTED TO WORK AGAIN…

    WARNING ANELP NEEDED

I updated my PS3 to software 3.10 last night. This morning I tried turning on PS3 and it seems to have messed up. I always have it plugged into same tv and it worked before.
    PROBLEMS:
TV screen stays blue even when ps3 sitched on
PS3 usb ports are NOT not working
PS3 wont turn off by holding power on system or controller
Ocasionally the PS3 did register ports and :work: on TV but the TV was completly pixelated. Could read writing but no background and controllers wouldnt work to select the yes or no option.
When holding in PS on controller it didnt bring up that screen either.

This software update 3.10 really does seem to have killed my PS3. It was working perfect…..

  • Tizzy

oh and no menu options would work either.

    sorry about the spelling

  • Morgan

I had YLOD after 3.01, returned to Sony and got it back working.

  • doug

just forced to take 3.1 now my Battlefield Badcompany unlocks are all locked again, and since I already achieved them I think they are now permanently blocked.

  • Kane

Ditto. I’ve had my PS3 slim for just over a month, never had an issue before. Now after the 3.10 update, both of my controllers are having issues connecting with bluetooth. If I restart a couple of times and screw around with them, I can manage to connect and play without issue. But I just updated the night before last and have already had this connection issue pop up twice.

  • kenny

I just reformatted my ps3 in hopes it would get rid of the 3.10 update but after 4 hours no luck.
This is the first update that has screwed my ps3 up.
    U have my email sony.
someone better be fixing this or it will be the last sony product i buy.

  • lisa

im having alot of problerms with the old ps3 and the new ps3 slimline, the following issues i’m having is consoles freezeing while in game mode, bluetooth not working, cant see any of my friends list or anybody coming or going offline and on a few occasions cant even get invites or send erm to join online games, and at one point the old ps3 console brought up a error to rebuild hard drive, is anybody else having these same issues it would be nice to know as this all started since the new 3.10 update.

  • anonymous

    im having issues too
i cant play anything now because my ps3 freezes after loading the cd, its gonna show the COD4 modern warfare logo
    and then freezes…..
so sony pls make a new update to fix this.

  • Melissa

My son upgraded his PS3 to version 3.1 last night and now he is unable to play any game online. He is able to play the games on disk, just not online. We tried everything, short of erasing the hard drive (which we won’t do). He is very upset.

  • Martijn

I have also updated my PS3 slim with the 3.10 update.
This morning i could not connect my controllers without the cable, but i fixed this. Now in the evening i turned it on again, and my screen now flickers black and normal every second. cant do nothing about this. who can help me.
Is this an update error or is my ps3 broken. I have it now for only a month or so.
    Thx guys

  • Chris

Did update and can no longer read any type of disc. Unit was working perfectly before update. This unit is 18 months old.

Having same problem of not recognizing any Bluray movies or games after updating to 3.10. Tried a regular dvd movie and worked fine, but after restarting, restoring original settings, etc. still won’t recognize bluray discs. HELP!!!

    Any ideas guys???

  • deadspace2124

for me most video players online worked before 3.10 but now most don’t and i can’t watch my shows

  • jennifer

My ps3 is saying i need to update my data to get online and play my game. But it wont update it goes up to 30% and says an error has occurred?

  • roger

I have the same problem. Before restoring factory defaults, which took 5 hours, it won\’t play PS games, and most of the blu-ray movies. After the restore, some blu-ray moives are playing, some are still not. I believe it is the firmware problem, and not hardware issue.

  • Keeta

Since the update, I have no audio for any disc playback.

  • Dal

Mine bricked tonight. Froze in the midst of a blu ray movie and then froze again during a game. now i wont read any discs… just like the last time…

  • John

Intsalled the new update this morning and it is not reading my netflix disc anymore. Worked fine before the update

  • steve

I’ve got exactly the same on mine

  • steve

upgraded PS3 to version 3.10 last night and now unable to play the games on disk……….

  • Jay

My dual shock wont work after the update and still does not work. The four red lights flash when I activate it but then it turns off. I cant re-connect using the cable either, any ideas?

  • Ben

I just updated and do not have sound anymore. Any word on when this will be fixed?

  • Kevin

I’ve upgraded my PS3 to 3.10. Now it won’t read any disks at all – games, blue-ray, DVD or CD. Never had any problems at all before the upgrade. Very poor sony..

  • Yann

Well, Looks like I just joined the xlub! Why are we forced to do these stupid firmware upgrade??
I have the 60GB (2 years) old and never had a single issue. Yesterday, I installed 3.10 because I was told to do so. Now, all my games freezes, looks like the bluray drive is dead…Bluray movie also start and freeze, with the drive doing a funny noise. DVD plays fine and downloaded games play fine too.
Now, I just hope that the firmware didn’t damage the drive, and that a new firmware will fix this. But for some reason, I think it is dead…
What’s now? How do we contact Sony for this problem?
    I’m in Ireland.

    Yann

  • Jonathan

I had my PS3 stop reading Blu rays and games after 3.01, and I am 3 months out of warranty…I nagged Sony 3 times by email and called the service line and spoke to supervisors twice, only to be told I would have to pay $150 to have my system fixed. Finally I got them to agree to fix it, and then after sending it in, they told me that they would not fix it for free since I had opened the unit (I opened it to clean the blu ray lense after being rejected by Sony 4 times – I figured I had nothing to lose). Now they are sending it back to me unrepaired…what a joke.

  • Emerson

Damn. I updated to 3.1 last night and then it shut off after installation. Today, I turn it on and I can hear the opening sound, but there is absolutely no video. It’s just black. I can hear discs load, but the screen stays black. I have the 80GB MSG4 version. I was ready to spend my time over Thanksgiving watching blu-rays. F*ck.

  • Emerson

Holy crap, I fixed it. After getting no results resetting the video mode and switching from HDMI to the included SD composite AV cables, I tried to get it into safe mode, and still no video (but I could hear the opening sound). Finally I did what the troubleshooting said and shut the PS3 and TV down completely and unplugged them both. Replugged them and turned them on, and voila! There’s the PS3 bar! Couldn’t believe it. Changed the video settings back to HDMI, and it works fine now. Wish you all the best of luck.

  • hqt

yea big problem my blueray drive appears to not be working. This was the same day I updated the firmware. Froze on mw2 a couple of times. Then when realize what might be happening i tested it with UC2 SFIV etc – nothing works now. I can play DVD movies :)
Anyways I hope the damage is not permanent and that a new firmware can fix this. Otherwise back to the PC.

BTW 2 weeks before the xbox360 red ringed right after the starting cinematics of halo odst. I’m not very hot on console right now.

  • abraham

well after the update my ps3 died i have an 80 gig backward compatible. after the update it started to shut down by itself then it just didn’t start it shows the yellow and red light that a lot of people talk about. And no i never had any kind of problem with my system before the update sony just told me to send them 150 to fix it, sucks huh

  • http://connect Darth Luscious

Yup, my system bricked after the latest update. Never had a problem in the past and I take care of my system so please I don’t want to hear people saying that I did something to the PS3 to make this happen.

  • Darth Luscious

Yup, my system bricked after this latest update. And I take care of my system so I don’t want to hear people saying that it’s something I did. I turned it on and it said there was an update. The update finished and I put in a Blu Ray to watch. Turned the system off after the movie was over and went to have dinner. I came back and turned the system on again and all I get is a black screen and no sound. Thanks a bunch Sony.

  • Alan Dawkins

Yes. The BluRay drive is now dead on my 40GB PS3 console which is less than 2 years old with only light use. Sony don’t want to know and are charging £99 to fix. Only option is to take the retailer to court even though Sony is clearly to blame.

  • Wolo

I’ve been having a number of blu-ray problems since 3.1 and Sony has acted like they haven’t heard of this problem before. Prior to 3.1, my PS3 worked flawlessly. Immediately upon restart after finishing the 3.1 install, BR media struggles to be read.

  • bribes

isme dont download the update i havent yet and im not planning too seeing as all these people have had problems with the update!! so im not downloading it.

  • bribes

yo yo whoever hasnt downloaded the update yet DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT!!

  • fatlantis26

My ps3 is having some problem after the 3.10 update it doesnt want to read some of the games and also some of the movies. The game like Warhawk doenst want to play and some other movies and i want to know when is the next update going to be available.

  • Tammy

I’m totally there. After updating to 3.10 (don’t know what version I was running before) my system is now a very expensive DVD player. No PS3 games, no blu-ray. I was running the Netflix instant streaming disk too, I wonder if that is a factor somehow? Anyway, the full reformat didn’t work at all, and according to Sony, the only fix is to send it in and pay them $149 for a used refurb.

  • jjoonas

I have the original 60GB and all updates before went fine.
Now multi-episode DVD’s are not working, only the 1st episode can be played. Worked fine before update.

This seems to be a lottery – one never knows what happens with the updates!

  • SPADB

My PS3 slim V3.10, both my dualshock 3 controllers and my blu-ray controller fail to work, all of them manage to turn on my PS3 but that’s it, then it just sticks at the “What’s New” screen. I’ve tried resetting both controllers, re-paired the BD controller, pulled the mains plug, done the USB pairing. This issue coincides exactly with the firmware update and to be honest I’m getting well annoyed with this now. I hope they fix it soon!

  • http://yahoo.co.uk jason

Hi yes now i have updted to 3.10 my ps3 keeps freezing. what can we do and will sony fix this and when.

  • karphan

My playstation since the update has twice in five days lost the laser drive, it won’t spin anything, after the first part died, I order a new one and four hours later it too fried, I’m starting to wonder if the new update had anything to do with this

  • Stone Dragon

I have a 40GB model and while I have not personally had any issues I do know several PS3 owners who have experienced Blu-Ray Failure after downloading both the 3.01 and 3.10 updates (they have 40GB model as well). Each of their consoles were just barely out of warranty and Sony asked for $150 to fix the problems. While there are a lot of people out there that say it’s impossible for firmware to damage hardware I know this is not the case as firmware controls hardware and heavily influences functionality and performance. Everyone I personally know who experienced issues takes very good care of their equipment and most of them are technically inclined. They all experienced problems within a few minutes or a few days of downloading new firmware. This coupled with the fact that many other users are reporting similar events and timelines in relationship to downloading firmware certainly strongly suggests that there is a good possibility there IS A LEGITIMATE PROBLEM. I know there are several people who will read this and say “I have a 40GB model and I’m perfectly fine, so there is no way Sony is at fault.” While it is natural to think that problematic firmware would affect all users or no users it’s important to remember that even at launch there were 2 PS3 versions to choose from, later there was the 80GB and 40GB models followed by the 160GB and Slim models. While the basic components are the same, boards vary in the manufacturing process and components come from various suppliers. Even the 80GB model had substantial differences from the other models with the hardware necessary for backwards compatibility. There are always going to be variances to account for and I’m sure Sony does what it can to properly test firmware before releasing it, but there simply could be a batch of PS3 boards out there that have some minute differences from the other boards. I once ordered a 25 pack of USB drives from ULTRA for use on Windows CE devices only to find out that 5 worked with Windows CE and 20 did not, but they all worked on a Windows based desktop system. After taking the drives apart I discovered that they were from 2 different manufacturers, but there were sold under the same name. It’s all about the firmware on the chip! I truly feel for those who are experiencing problems whether it be with the network issue, Blu-Ray etc… Even if a very small percentage of consoles are indeed affected I hope Sony steps up to the plate and handles these issues for their loyal customers.

  • Jonathan

I have a 40GB, and also lost Blu-Ray function…DVD’s, CD’s, PS1 games all work fine. I was 3 months out of warranty when it hit, and I only had about 200 hours of playtime on the system. I requested that Sony fix it as a “good faith repair” by submitting the request 3 times online, calling twice, and asking to speak with a supervisor. Finally (after I asked nicely) they agreed to fix it for me at no cost.

after receivng my PS3 they contacted me and stated that they would not fix it after all, since I had removed the warranty sticker from the PS3 case (I did this to clean the blu ray lense as a last ditch effort after being refused by them 4 times).

The point is, if you are having trouble, call them, be respectful, ask to speak to a supervisor and nicely ask for them to fix it for free.

oh, and if you tried to fix it yourself, or clean the lense out of despiration, don’t bother sending it in.

  • kman83

no syching trophys past 22%, won’t play disks at all, can’t go back to XMB by pushing PS button during music or video from hard drive without quitting to playback. the only thing my $500.00 Original 80GB PS3 is good for now is playing downloaded music, video, and games from PSN. I wish I had never updated at all ever. I have no chance to finish any disk-based games. If I didnt have so many downloaded games I would throw it away, I already have an mp3 player.

I have recently updated…last night and after nuermous attempts this morning, PS3 is not recognising any of my games. It will not load the games, my controllers however are fine, just the loading of the games, is the current issue. This is crap, I could not play any games as I needed to complete the mandatory update and now the games wont load! Very disappointing

  • Krystal

Blu Rays and all games, will not load. :(

  • Jonesy

As with a number of the others; updated to 3.10 and immediately after the Blu-ray drive is dead. No games, no Blu-ray movies, no DVD.

I’ve watched 4 Blu-ray movies and played about 6 games through on it – pretty poor for a $700 system.

  • http://www.banburydesign.com Jay Banbury

We were having problems with the system freezing after update 3.01, thought update 3.10 would fix everything, updated, and now it will not read blu ray disc! This is a very expensive paper weight! Sony needs to take responsibility for their mistakes!

  • rlin

I tried to play a Startrek BD disc and the PS3 came up with a message that I HAD to update software for new encryption keys. Several attempts, same message. So updted and got version 3.15. Then got a message to “press the PS3 button – use the wireless controller”. Did. Nothing happened – frozen. Turned power off, disconned from amins etc; 3 times. Same screen and no response to anything. Was able to get the disc out at the 3rd attempt.

Any help/recommendations with this will be greatly appreciated.

  • jared

you can add yet another ps3 owner with BD issues to the list. After updating to 3.0 (neccessary if you game online), there was not an immeidiate problem. however, after a few days i was playing codmw2 and the game crashed, and my first thought was “ok, no big deal,” what was different was that after i restarted the game, it immeidiately froze- the blueray drive was making a slight ticking noise and it appeared to be trying to read the disc unsuccessfully. Multiple system restarts only caused the ps3 to glitch even more, ie- there is a disc in the drive yet it will not show in xmb. I read that the firmware could potentially lead to the blueray drive overheating and becoming locked. To test this theory, i let the system sit for several hours and then powered it on- yes it would recognize the game disc (still codmw2), and indeed the game would play…for ten minutes- then the drive would lock up and that odd ticking noise would return. I then placed an ice pack (yes, a freaking ice pack!) directly on the ps3 case above the blueray player and again let it sit for a couple of hours. I powered on the system, it recognized the game (still cod) and LO! it didn’t freeze after ten min! I managed to get roughly 40 min of playtime before the aforementioned symptoms resumed. If this sounds like an issue you are having, attempt this experiment and see if you get extended playtimes. HA! hardware issues my ass!

  • Ashley

SAME DAMN PROBLEM! I updated to the 3.10 version and during a game of MW2 (when viewing the online scores at the end of a match) my PS3 completely froze. I had no option but to switch if off at the back. Nothing else would work to shut it down. I restarted it and it wouldn’t play any games or blueray movies. Actually it doesnt even read what I put in it. I never get a disk indicator to pop up, the circle in the top right hand corner just keeps spinning but never reads anything.
I haven’t tried a DVD but I never use those anyway! Im so mad because it is 1 month out of warranty and Playstation wants to charge me $150 to get if fixed. I think this is BULL S***. If Sony’s update is what is disabling the blue ray drives in so many people’s systems why wont they step up and fix them free of charge! Thats some corrupt BS.

  • Jesus

i have the 60GB ps3 and same problems, when i try to play a ps3 game just works like 10 min and then the game frezes because the the lens stops reading the disc.

when i try to play a ps2 game it works fine and with DVD movies too

  • Prashant

My PS3 is dead after updating.

  • el_em_en_oh

I installed V3.10 on my PS3, and now I'm FROZEN on the screen that's asking me to press "OK" or the "PS" button, or the "X" button to Enter, or the "O" button to Cancel. Problem is, I can't get ANY of the buttons on my controller to work, let alone the buttons it's asking me to push/press. I have tried resetting the system via the reset button on the back of the PS3 unit, to no avail. The system just starts up and goes directly to the screen I mentioned above. I know my controller works, as I navigated to the "System Update" screen on the PS3 just prior to this problem occuring. As of this minute, my PS3 is unusable, unless someone has a fix or bandaid for this.

  • Pissed

Updated my PS3 and no disc works… Waiting and searching for answer's or months and nothing. I refuse to pay $150 to fix.. I have the fat 40 gig. I can't even sell it on e-bay for $100.. no one buying them with this problem out there.. Sony, please post something, don't stay quiet, give an answer for this…..

  • tom

yeah me the way to fix this is go to system settings restore default settings set up hdmi, controller and web connections again should work fine

  • mr Alan

got a fat 80gig ps3 and after the latest update dragon age origins keeps freezing, not had this problem before.

  • Larry

After the update on a PS3 model CECHE01 my game Dragon Age Origins is now freezing.
Sometimes I can play for 3 or 4 hours no problems then I play for 1 hour and it freezes 3 times. It happens during gameplay but also when loading a past save point. I have also had sound drop out…All of these issues never happened before until after the update.. I have a hard wired connection to the internet and updated that way…Update seem to go fine so It has to be a firmware issue.
Sony needs to be found guilty of releasing flawed software to its consumers and be held accountable for this vast amount of issues I am seeing reported all over the net.

  • Mr G

I have a phat 80gig ps3 and after update 3.01 blu-ray movies and dvds only display a black screen when you press play, not had any problems before. Games discs still work properly. When I try and Quit a game the console freezes displaying a "starfield" image. I spoke to a Sony repair shop and they would not admit that it was a firmware update problem. I was advised to install update 3.30 but I am worried that the console may be bricked.
