Nokia NSeries OS: Out with Symbian, in with Maemo by 2012

It has been reported that Nokia are planning to phase out the Symbian OS within their NSeries handsets, in favor of switching to the up and coming linux-based Maemo operating system.

As stated over at BGR, Nokia still have a number of NSeries handsets to release which will run on the Symbian OS, but after that, it is thought that they will proceed forward with Maemo – the OS of choice for the delayed Nokia N900 smartphone / internet tablet.

However, BGR points out that Nokia will not be getting rid of Symbian all together, as Eseries and the new Xseries will still be supported – making this a NSeries-only affair it seems.

What do you think about this? Do you think Maemo is the answer for Nokia?
