Nokia N900: Release delayed yet again

Nokia N900: Release delayed yet again

By: Alan Ng | November 17, 2009 | 37 Comments

Dare we say it, but this is getting a bit crazy now. We have just been informed that Nokia has once again delayed the release of the upcoming Nokia N900 smartphone, previously expected on the 16th November.

We do not have an exact date, but we have been told by Mobile Phones Direct, who operate Nokia Retail, that the release has now been pushed back until the end of this month.

They also ensured us that all customers who have the phone on pre-order, will receive their phone as soon as Nokia give the green light, so we’ll try to keep you updated on the situation if anything changes.

How do you feel about this? No doubt there are thousands who have this phone on pre-order, so we can imagine you are feeling pretty miffed about this. Leave us a comment with your thoughts below.

Whilst I am annoyed with the delay…I would much rather have a phone with the right firmware that matched perfectly and made the phone a joy to use, without requiring 2 or 3 major firmware updates within the first few months to correct major issues…(aka N97).
So whilst I’m sure people will moan and whine about, you guys really should just wait another few weeks to the something perfect..rather than something you will just moan about had you had it a week or two earlier….

Lets face it…the N900 will be out-of-date within 6-8 months anyone…so those who have ordered it on a contract might as well just wait for something perfectly working to keep them happy during the contract!

While i’m a bit ****** that it has been put back again and feel that Nokia & MPD could have been a bit more forthcomming with the information another couple of weeks wont kill me.

    Never Mind

This phone should of been out months ago
They always do this, always late, always nothing completed properly.

It took them MONTHS to release kinetic scrolling for the N97, when it should of been a feature out of the box.

I have no doubt that the N900 will EVOLVE into a great product, and pave the way forward with Maemo 6 (Capacitive Screens, Multitouch, Dual Core mobile processors etc…) But I hate feeling like an Alpha/Beta tester with Nokia all the time. They have had long enough to release a product that should be a lot more developed. Maemo isn’t exactly new…

This isn’t a dig at Nokia as such, cause they are all just as bad as each other lol.

It’s just my 2 pennies, but look at Symbian, after all these years it still doesn’t feel stable enough for my liking.

So disappoint, so that’s what customer services is about uh? I’m getting really frustrated about this right now: from August to September to beginning of October to end of October to 16th November and now…? I’ve preordered mine 3 days ago, on Saturday, it better be in my hands before the next year comes, and I’m serious!

  • http://www.izzievoodoo.com ninjaboxergirl

Pretty disgusted really- if Nokia Uk preorder customers get theirs around the 20th, why dont MPD? Ok, it’s only a week (AGAIN), but since my N95 is refusing to work and has done since I preordered in early October, then it’s not ideal at all. So let’s hope I get it for my birthday on 30th.

  • Bernardo

Well, my N97 is giving me grief and that’s the main reason why I chose to preorder the N900 (other than me being a phones freak! :p) but this is way too much…wait a minute: I know that some retailers have THEIR OWN delivery/availability dates, could it be that Nokia will stick to the 19th? (and by the way, if you were wondering, the release date for Nokia N900 being shifted from 16/11 to 19/11 is simply rumours on the Internet…). So could it be that the end of november applies to some retailers but NOT Nokia Online? *crosses fingers*

  • Alex Atkin UK

    This article is pretty misleading.

As the N900 has already “shipped” I do not think this is “another” delay from Nokia. I believe it is merely taking longer to reach retailers than they expected so they changed their ETA date accordingly.

The “end of November” is merely what the Nokia Retail website is now claiming, and possibly only refers to new orders. MPD are still quoting on the phone as “hopefully this week” which is more or less what they have been saying since the delay, week commencing 16th Nov, which basically means if it ships any time this week then there has been only ONE delay.

  • http://None John Bradshaw

This was looking increasing likely – none of the UK network websites even list it currently, Amazon.co.uk has no link and play.com have been saying 30th Nov release for a few days at least. On TV last night I even saw a Nokia advert for an N97 Mini rather than the N900.

It doesn\’t really feel like there will be actual (walk into a shop and buy one) availability this side of Christmas.

Nokia appear to have based their release strategy on the same highly successful model employed by Palm with the Pre:

    (1) Announce a cutting edge hardware/software combo.
    (2) Claim imminent release.
    (3) Push back a few weeks.
    (4) Got to (2) until competitors have cutting edge hardware/software combo (really) available.
    (5) Release an out of date hardware/software combo.

Marketing – Bill Hicks was right!

  • Bernardo

Hm, good point. After all, w/c 16/11 means any day from yesterday to Friday… I bet they’re going to struggle now that thousands and thousands more people are preordering this device. I hope they’ll learn to implement, thoroughly test and retest the device BEFORE giving the public false hopes!

  • Rod

This is true expansys have changed my expected date to end of November. Bad news !!!!

  • Seb Mason

There are some pritty good deals on nokiaretail.co.uk (Vodafone)

    Nokia N900 Handset – £82
    300 Minutes + Unlimited Texts – £35
    Unlimited Mobile Web – £5
    12 Month Contract!!!

That works out to a total of £562 for the whole cntract,
Bearing in mind just the handset from nokia is £500!

  • AFG

    1. I have pre ordered and told they ship on 19th by NOkia – that is the plan not a guarantee.

    2. If they tell us that is the plan and dont deliver it begs the question why. The only answer is that it is nearly Xmas and people often buy new phones etc….and they want the n900 to be phone of choice and if they say MAY release in Dec people would probably anticipate post Xmas and go elsewhere.

    3. Either way if they are not shipping on the 19th I will cancel my order as I dont like being misled and will keep my iphone and wait till the price drops and see what the software and updates and uptake look like. Nokia needs to deliver when they say they will or lose early adopters (the people like me pre ordering)

  • Alan Ng

Spot on AFG, couldn’t agree with you more.

  • http://? Chicken Man

Oh great that’s all we need another delay, but it don’t surprise me one bit. This phne better be worth it.

  • Bernardo

Yeah but STILL that’s disappointing. Let’s give it till Thursday and see, hopefully we’ll hear some news by then. *fingers crossed*

  • oscar

This is the most stupid market strategy,a delay of a couple of weeks is understandable, but dont do it 3-4 times.and when u give a new date make sure u can keep up to it.only tech addicts(one myself)know how good this phone is,so we will buy it anyway.but for the rest of the world they only see delays,so the n900 couldnt have started with a worse image

  • Dan

My current contract runs out at the start of december so hope this will be the last delay, otherwise i have no contract!! I pre-ordered it at the end of sept just to be safe but now its getting a little too close. But would rather have it working perfectly and not updated every 5 mins

  • andrew

it is a bit ridiculous as this “release” has been imminent since september when i preordered, the problem is that other makers arent static and the fear is that when released the N900 will be kinda obsolete with other devices coming in and taking the wow factor, look at the noise made about full flash hand sets, palm, android will be running this by jan so the would be monopoly has already been eroded, it s funny cos it smells just like the garmin nuviphone thats obsolete before its even been released.

  • Tinks

I rang nokia today cause i was mad but nokia themselves told me 19th nov was the new release date so if it isnt then ill never believe them.

  • http://pr angry

Nokia the worst customer service I have ever delt with. There is something very wrong with this phone and this company. I would have been happy to wait if in september when I preodered this phone they said release date Dec 10th. But they lied, misdirected and are still jerking everybody around. And I am so tired of people saying its ok cause we are getting a better phone…. What a load of crap. Nokia needs to take a good hard look at GM, used to be the largest auto maker in the world. Got to big to care about their customers, and they went down hard. I personally think that in the US they are waiting on T-Mobile to get its shipments and start selling the N900. and not one preorder customer will get theirs before that date. I am so angry with Nokia which I have tried to contact atleast 4 times and had not one response from customer care. I have cancelled my preorder and actually thru away my Nokia E51.

  • AFG

I presume you heard of the delay from a reliable source?
I have learnt not to tell my girlfriend I will be home a 9 and turn up at midnight – is Nokia run by Boeing execs these days. The lack of clarity (they could post to their website) suggests the pre order buyers are not important to Nokia….why should we find out from PR News what is going on?

  • Randy

Hey guys i called yesterday to the nokia online store in USA and they told me that the Nokia N900 is now in the store!!!! But they can´t ship the device because the Nokia BH-703 Bluetooth headset of the promotion with the pre-order is not compatible with the N900!!!! Was told due to firmware problem with wireless headset so couldnt ship till resolved what´s wrong with you Nokia? why you do this things in the North American market???? is for things like this that Nokia Is not a Leader in USA.

  • sk

Nokia has once again delayed their latest product ( nothing new)as they are the masters in announcing first envious list of specs for their new release and keeps on working for months and months after that. There must be some big issues with n900 which is taking so long for nokia people to solve. IMO leave the fisrt batch for hungry enthusiast and wait for the second batch of n900 which shall be more stable (hope so).
Nokia if you think people will be loyal to you with such delaying strategies than you are wrong. Everyone has become smart and this time of recession people don’t just want to waste their money on something half baked product which will be pain in the neck like your earlier n97.
Hope some nokia guys read this, take a printout and put on the display board of their conference room so that next time before announcing delay of their next product they know the reaction of people.

  • http://pr angry

And the other ten times Nokia said the N900 would be ready??? People please contact Nokia and tell them how wrong this is. Bluetooth headset?!?! ha got to be kidding. If its true, nothing worse than a Tech company that cant actually do tech!!! N900 suppose to be the biggest and the baddest? can not even do bluetooth?!?! Personally I think its just more BS from a company that could care less.

  • Glen

Believe me this phone is going to be trouble..

  • http://Long Alex

    Still waiting on MPD…

I called them and they said End of November for me

  • Kev

im fast loosing interest in this device, i say get a move on and get it out before other upcoming smartphones are released i was going to pre order but to tell you the truth im pretty glad now that i didnt ,how many times can you push back a “release date” ok maybe once but its taking the **** a little now.

  • Kevin

I’m rapidly losing patience, there have been far too many delays in the N900 release date. The latest warning sign is that the Nokia Flagship store in London removed their announcement from their Twitter page. Yesterday it said that the N900 would be on sale 11/19, but today it’s gone, the day before it goes on sale. Someone at NokiaRetail was pushing hard for me to make a pre-order – then suddenly stopped on Monday.

I’ve never been a fan of Nokia, their phones are unreliable, there service centres inept (“we can’t fix your phone, try a Nokia centre on the other side of the Atlantic”) and after sales support non-existent. So the Nokia N900 is a make or break phone to me. I really thought this phone was better that the iphone, but for that to be true, its got to be in my hands.

  • oscar

It should be given as an option;i wouldnt mind doing the updates myself, wat i mind is the funny character this story has take, nokia has no sense of PR or marketing

  • Marc

    Just read this:

    http://www.nokia.com/press/press-releases/showpressrelease?newsid=1355897

Apparently it has been released in the USA today (18/11) to consumers!!

It must be next week in Europe??

  • http://Long Alex

Thats just such a stupid thing to do by Nokia.

Nokia isnt even well known in the US, and the British love Nokias and they delay it here!!

    Irritating!

My contract ends on 6th December and thats also when my PAK code expires! I need this phone by 6th December or im going to have lots of trouble in keeping my number!

Come on Nokia, sort it out!

I just hope MobilePhonesDirect dont have any delays once they receive the phones!

  • Kevin

Nokia.co.uk site says: “Estimated delivery date: week commencing 23rd November.”

I hope that Nokia London shop will start selling it around Monday too. Then MPD may be selling it the following week at their Nokia stores. Someone told me that they have exclusive UK rights (through 8 outlets) until the end of year.

  • Robbbbbb

OMG! ffs!!!!!!!!!! i’ve been waiting for this for 2 months now! I’m lost without my phone and my social life has declined since i can never txt or call to check on times and places. If this is delayed once more i’m canceling my pre order and buying a fcking n97 or an iphone

  • AFG

Spoke to Nokia who said shipping on 23rd in UK – not too bad if they can stick to that – lets see.
The Americans think it has shipped there it seems altho no word from anyone receiving one yet.
Not too worried about firm updates coming out – expect that to be a regular event.
Linux isn’t truly open source by the way.

still hating typing on my iphone (if you can type one handed on it you are better than me after 2 years…I cant even type 2 handed accurately…grrrr) and upset about reception — can the n900 ph reception be much better…? Couldnt be hard to be if you ask me.

Please accept our sincere apologies for this further delay which is out of our control, and be assured that you are on a priority list for dispatch of a Nokia N900 as soon as it becomes available.

Does anyone actually know the date that it will be released. All this waiting is taking the hype away. I want to order one but what is the point if we have to wait like another month.

Nokia need to fix up now especially because people are spending £500 on the phone. Probably be released next year December the rate their going.

  • http://geral@ontaredes.pt Rui Eduardo

I think Nokia has made the delay on purpose. I think that hey have never expected the success in pre-orders of n900, as so, if they start selling the n900 than the selling of n97 ant the 97mini will drop because everyone would by the n900 and than they would have serious problems with their n97′s stock. I’ve seen some n900 outdoor advertisement in September (in Portugal), but at the moment they are just keep passing the n97 and n97 mini on TV. So why wouldn’t they advertise the new 900? I think my theory makes some sense (fist empty the n97 stock)…
