Verizon Droid vs. iPhone: How does it stack up?

The Apple iPhone has now been on the market for over two years now and no matter what new Smartphone is released, they do not come close to its success. The iPhone has been surrounded by so much hype, but a new handset has arrived with the same amount of hype, the Verizon Motorola Droid.

This new handset has two things going for it; it is on the preferred and most popular network in the U.S. and the fact that it is the first handset to run on the new Google Android 2.0 OS. The Droid is so much better than a host of other touchscreen phones on the market, but the lack of multi-touch could be a huge problem.

Tulsaworld.com has been taking a closer look to see how well the Motorola Droid stacks up against the iPhone 3GS. Both handsets come with 16GB of storage, but the iPhone offers up to 32GB. Both cost the same, but you have to go through all the hassle of a mail-in rebate for the Droid.

The screen on the Droid is a little taller and is also a little thicker; this is because the Droid has that slide out keyboard. If you read the full article from Tulsaworld.com, they still have the iPhone as the true king of the Smartphone’s, but the Droid has shown what Android can do. Apple will have to work hard on their next iPhone if they want to stay on top.

The droid can be upgraded to 32 GB of storage as well.

I forgot to mention the droid has a much higher screen resolution and faster processor which makes it capable of better video playback and gaming graphics than the IPhone.

      • KrakaJap says:

        Faster processor??? LOL
You’re going to have to do better research then that. Both processors are 600mhz and the Droid, in fact, only runs it at 550 with a stronger focus on multitasking whereas the iPhone focuses on smoother graphics display.

Where on earth did you read the Droid has a faster processor???

The TI OMAP 3430 (Droid) and the Samsung S5PC100 (iPhone) are for the most part identical in speed and features. They’re simply used in slighty different ways.

      • iPhone with 93K+ apps would have to be the better pic. Droid also seems more targeted towards teens. I can run several different types of stock trading platforms on the iPhone.

I think iphone has SGX535 that does 28M polys/s while droid has a SGX530 which does 14M polys/s. how could droid has better gaming graphics?

I waited for the droid but I got my iphone after I checked out droid. iphone has better build quality I think. plus, when I asked the VW rep if I could see one that is powered one for demo. the guy told me one word ‘NO’ and walked away. while at ATT store, I got warmly greeted. the girl asked me what’s the purpose of my visit and put me on the list. while I am waiting, she offer me a some water. then in about 2 minutes, a rep is ready.

Does VW have better network? probably yes. But I am looking for the overall produce/service and VW failed.

who the heck cares about video playback and cpu? perhaps the #1 reason iphone dominates the market is because of its app support… as much as i’m against high commercial products like the iphone, i’ve used several windows mobile phones and simply the lack of software for smartphones is frustrating, especially when it pales in comparison to the iphone and the vast amounts of small and great things the iphone can do, even with whatever GPU and CPU power it carries from 2 years ago.

I don’t usually post on these things but this is silly.

I’m pretty sure that every Droid owner has looked at the iPhone and come to their own conclusions: not for me.

Every other sap out there bought one and now they’re as ubiquitous as the Razr once was.

However, the VAST MAJORITY of iPhone users have NOT used a Droid (or any other Android device) and you can tell from reading hundreds of threads like this.

Seriously, put a Droid next to an iPhone and play with them. You have to be a retard to pick the iPhone.

Sure, not that long ago it was the best. Hell, I nearly bought one. But now I have a Droid and have spent too many hours with my wife’s iPhone next to my Droid running through little tests and scenarios. The Droid wins EVERY TIME.

I find it surprising that so many so-called ‘independent reviewers’ say “iPhone still the best”…

    They too have been brain-washed.

    jb,

instead of saying “you have to be a retard to pick the iphone” why don’t you back them up with facts on WHY the Droid is better.

I saw a Droid, iPhone in the touchscreen dept still hands down dominates over the droid. Construction also on the droid wasnt on par with the iPhone. My 2¢. Gotta give it to Apple, they developed this 2 years ago and still no one has knocked it off it’s throne.

So much talk about hardware, software, screen size, and network. The reality is that the average person will never push either phone to it’s limit. Perception is reality. And the reality is that overall the iPhone is, in the eye of the general public, the best smartphone. VW/google/motorola did a good job of making a device “like” the iPhone. Just not as fun…BTW, I just typed this on my iPhone while having a conversation with my chick on my iPhone…something you cannot do on the Verizon network 

  7. Dan says:

iPhone is better. No question. Sucks to be the Droid. Thats it!

  8. Steve says:

The iPhone is coming to the Verizon network anyway, now that AT&T’s exclusivity terms are expiring. So for those who have verizon, you’ll soon be able to put the iPhone and Droid side by side and determine which smartphone is the better choice for YOU.

Like many have said on here, the technologies are all different. But you’ll be using this phone almost every day for more than just talking. So no matter what’s “under the hood”, someone will love the Droid for how they perceive the Android OS to run, while another person may still prefer the iPhone and its perceived advantages.

In other words, I don’t think this iPhone vs. Droid is something that can be won since it comes down to style, usability, and tolerance for the idiosyncrasies that are inherent to each device.

  9. gburn11 says:

I could bad mouth the Iphone all day long. But that’s not it at all. The Iphone is a phone for people who wear designer clothes no matter how uncomfortable they, drives a SUV regardless the price of gas, the Iphone is concerned about looks and and simple use, why the Droid is a phone that does something the Iphone can’t compete with you know u can use it as a phone. WOWS

  10. Joe Shmoe says:

Yeah, the iPhone is a great device, only when you have 3G, but AT&T can’t even deliver that most the time. Non stop dropped calls. More like the iFail. At least when I have my Droid I have 3G coverage EVERYWHERE! And to the ding dong who said he posted this while talking to someone. Right, because so many people out there are going “Ok, Pete, hold on while I get online real quick and check something” Gimme a break.
