Motorola Droid a Letdown: iPhone Still King

Motorola Droid a Letdown: iPhone Still King

By: Peter Chubb | November 12, 2009 | 16 Comments

There have been so many reviews all over the Internet where the Motorola Droid and the iPhone are put side by side in a battle to the death, well that is how they describe it. In reality things are a little different, it is clear that the launch of the Droid was a bit of a letdown and it is certainly clear that the iPhone is still king.

Other handsets have tried in the past to take on the mighty Apple iPhone, but they have not succeeded. However, there is a difference with those previous smartphones and the Motorola Droid, they did not make any claims that they could kill off the iPhone as Verizon did with the Droid.

All the ad campaigns had Motorola and Verizon Wireless vs. Apple and AT&T, and no guesses for who won the battle. We covered in a recent post the poor sales figures compared to how much Verizon had spent on its AT&T campaign to win customers back.

There was so much hype surrounding the Motorola Droid that almost a week later, it all seems a bit of a letdown. Computer World explains that the Droid does not do that much, such as the lack of a multitouch screen and a horrible keyboard.

All these shortcomings are not good for the Droid, but it does bode well for the next Android powered cell phone.

seems like for every ‘Droid launch a success’ headline, I see one of these, ‘Droid a dissapointment.’ It was just this morning that I noticed 90% of these articles are coming from this site. I don’t believe anyone of any opinion or no matter how much they <3 their apple, thinks droid is a ‘failure.’ Is this site run on a mac mini?

Ah, of course. This post is based on the Computer World article. If anyone want some entertainment read the comments to that hilariously lame review. Every iPhone user I’ve shown my new Droid to with has been impressed. The Droid isn’t an iPhone killer, it’s an AT&T killer.

So some love their iPhones(me actually) and some really are excited about Android phones(me too). There’s more than enough room for both and then some. But I expect this post will attract teens and such to display their stupidity as usual.
Just quit with the phoney phone wars – competition is good. It’s what the free world is built on

I have Verizon as my cellular carrier and was interested in the smart phones for my daughter. She does not have the money to pay for the ‘data plan’ and would initially like to use it just as a cell phone, i.e., talk, visual mail, etc. Verizon says (store clerk) that if you purchase a smart phone (droid, blackberry storm, etc.) you ‘have to’ have the data plan. Is this true?
    Thank You

I own a (jailbroken) 3GS and bought a Driod from Best Buy on Verizon. Ironically, at least here in Cambridge, MA and the surrounding areas, Verizon’s poor reception was the last nail against the Droid. True.

Droid is a superb device, and in many ways better than the iPhone. It’s fast, intuitive and has a far superior display. The open-source makes the iPhone feel a bit restrictive and outdated. If I have better VZW reception, I’d likely have kept it.

I hope Apple feels the heat and gives us a 4G with better screen resolution.

I held a Droid and thought it felt cheap. It felt like my VCR’s remote, hollow and plasticky. I bet Android is a nice bit of software, but the device seemed crappy. No, I do not have an iPhone, either (Verizon here). But the family does have two iPod Touches. Now there is some nice hardware AND software. What a sweet device that is, I can’t even say enough so I won’t say anymore :)

I am on Verizon and I use a Mac. So far I havenʻt seen any iPhone killers do the basics that I want as a Mac user. Sync my address book, itunes and mail (without having to use Google apps), take decent photos / video and allow me to transfer them to/from my computer without subscriptions to 3rd party apps etc.

Does any device besides and iPhone toggle to internet wireless networks when available?

  • Rico

The Droid felt cheap? You are alone on this one buddy. Sure Iphone and Droid are going through their “nemesis” motions but to call Droid cheap or crappy is totally untrue. Just about every board mentions the quality craftsmanship that was put into the Droid. I really don’t think you ever held one…. or you could be a Iphone fan boy that’s completely oblivious to a quality phone. Either way, you are a moron.

Well, that is one of the biggest disadvantages to a Mac. I personally love them, but I also accept the fact that being a Mac-owner means having much less versatility and also having an extremely hard time finding software (when compared to a pc). So if you have a Mac AND an iPhone then you’re set. However, its much harder syncing other phones to one. To answer your question, it sounds like you are asking if other phones have the ability to connect to wifi networks. The answer to that is CERTAINLY. There are many phones on the market that have wifi capability. IE: many windows-based smartphones (htc and others), any Android based phone, the new Blackberry Storm 2, and many others.

Yes, Thats true. Any time you buy a phone requiring internet service there is a data plan service charge.

The Droid which is an awesome phone(I have never used iPhone) automatically picks up wireless networks if the option is selected. The user interface is awesome and quick. And the touch system, not sure why everyone is saying there is no touch system, it works just fine. I have a great signal everywhere and I am in the boondocks! Go Verizon! Plan is a little pricey but all in all it works excellent in my area.

Sounds like you picked up a non-functioning hollow shell display model at the store (otherwise you would mention that you did more than hold it). The droid is definitely not hollow and plasticky. I'm sorry that you are the shallow type that judges devices based on a few minutes of fiddling with them, or in this case, holding a non-functioning display unit…. When you get your iPhone, don't blame me when you're late because your phone was syncing for 10 minutes before you could take it off the charger. Don't blame me when #attfail repeatedly drops you from the important conference call with your bosses or clients, and you lose your job. And don't blame me when your phone has a major design flaw and your lauded CEO says that the problem must be with you, the user, and it's the media's fault for blowing everything out of proportion, but by the way, here's a $30 rubber case that would fix the problem if there actually was a problem…. hmmmm….

no its called "ROOTING" to be able to turn off the data and hence not pay for it
